Relux is right, though: Every once in a while I stumble upon a cool, legit explorer on IG. Actually that's how I found out about Relux (his pics are pretty nice, too!)

That happened with me but with Flickr. Before I found UER I was using Flickr for years. When I came here, I found out half the people I'd been following on Flickr for years, were active members of this site. Pretty cool!

I like it because they usually name drop so it's a good way to find out about new locations. I couldn't care less what they think of me when and where I explore or if I'm old school. Usually when I go to a location, I'll shoot a couple of photos with my phone using Hipstamatic (or as my friends and I refer to it, Hipstagram) and upload those to Facebook but I also make sure to turn off location before doing so.

In my region, very little good explores get posted on IG. It's mostly the same spots by different people. You can actually watch the cycle. One dude will takes the credit, act like Mr. Cool, then shows others the spot to show they are Mr. Cool and then you will see all the Mr. Cool followers then post the same photos. They will sometimes post little poems and sayings like "The world in my hands" or "It's views like this you wish you had", "just another day out in the world" etc. You can see their egos grow over time until it comes to the point where they consider everyone their "fans". It's all a bit ridiculous and sad, really.

I've met explorers from a ton of different places and nowhere do the people compare to those i've met on IG. In my experience, IG explorers (at least in my region) are some of the most unskilled explorers i've ever met. They really have no clue. It's actually pretty damn funny watching these kids act like they know it all and mocking others. The joke is on them. No one here really cares about IGers, they arnt even considered explorers in most cases. They are just kids with cameras trying to look cool.

Now and then you run across a cool explorer here on IG, but not very often. It is what it is.

THAT is msp elites answer at its finest. the rest of the country for the most part enjoys exploring and encourages it. places around here have been done a few times over, places outside of here have also been done a few times over. its very rare that a virgin spot is found. but it happens.

as for ig, well, is that the new flikr? who cares, get out there and explore.

Guys, it's just 21st century, when new mobile phone technologies and social sites on internet are getting more and more accessible for everyone whoever knows how to push buttons.

In 2008 i could only imagine to see my explorer friend images which are taken seconds, minutes or hours ago on my mobile phone. Textual content of messages took more space than visual. In most cases, i had to read descriptions of a place and imagine how it looks like, piece by piece....

Instagram users are able to choose privacy settings - i don't see any difference between Facebook wall pictures, "instagram" is just one out of 100 social networks/tools, where you can post stuff directly from your phone.

Do not speak of instagram users as "attention whores". They just choose one of the SIMPLEST ways how to post images on-line, saving their time on handling digital cameras, another photo-sharing networks (for example, devianart.com).

The only instagram user i know is my sister. Even if she can access more than 2 digital cameras, she still uses mobile photography because her intentions are to share her viewpoint ASAP with her friends without losing time on uploading images from SD cards and so on.

Time is precious.

Yeah, everyone enjoys exploring here too. I certainly encourage anyone that likes to explore to explore and to explore more.

Might be rare where you live but not rare where i live.

I just wish some of these elitist, anti-instagram explorers could honestly say
"But urbex is all about the camera and the site you upload your images to. If you're not using a tripod, then you're not exploring correctly."

Disclaimer: I do NOT use Instantgram.
I shoot with my 17.3 megapixel palm-sized Cybershot that another explorer on here described as "Your camera sucks." and upload all my content HERE (and sometimes Facebook if I feel life showing my mug to friends). Am I doing it right? Am I?!

hmmm...I didn't get the impression that people here are upset about the image quality of IG explorer's photos. Sure filters and hashtags are cheesy, but I think it's more about the increasing group of explorers (who happen to post a lot to IG) lack even the slightest sense of discretion and blow up spots that gets people upset. It doesn't just happen on IG, but that seems to be the growing trend right now.

In fact, I have a lot of respect for all the people I know who explore without a camera. They're usually the ones having the most fun anyway.

This isn't about image quality or photography at all, Its about people that exploit this hobby for fame.

I could not possibly care less about the "artistic photography" aspect of urbex, or the "over-secretiveness" of it, either. Whatever.

Are the people who upload those pics flooded with hashtags for public support pro douchers?: Yes. Am I for sharing them on my private account, no hastags, and with anonymous locations?: No.

It's not Instagram, it's how people use Instagram. Ie: guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I got you beat. 14.1 miserable Cybershot megapixels here.

I don't think they'd allow my photos on instagram, they look like a Sega Saturn video cut scene.
