You don't understand... SOMEONE IS DOING URBEX WRONG AND MUST BE CORRECTED. IT IS IN THE RULE BOOK!

Have the Urbex Police been informed about these impostors?

You are a master jokester sir!

All joking aside, in my opinion all instantgram is is the latest fucking bullshit photo sharing trend site of the mid 2k10's.

...shit Im still using Photobucket!
I am too old to be following these hip (do you kids still say that? Lol) photo sharing websites.

Let the HIKs (happy instantgram kids) shoot their reckless shit while we do ours because all I see here is "RAH-RAH we're better then them RAH!"

I think they are only adding to the diversity and depth of the community. While they may not be technically "urban explorers" in the purest sense, I don't think it's a piece of the pie we all have to share. Instead, they are only making the pie bigger for everyone. So, cheers, keep it up.

I will sometimes post a uer photo in instagram. I don't do it too often but if I feel like it I will. It's just another venue for sharing creativity.

Here's a good quote I found about them:

"There has long been a subculture of so-called “urban explorers” who have made a game of accessing off-limits places. But Deas and the other Instagrammers distinguish themselves from these mostly older, more cerebral trespassers. “They'll go to the top of the bridge and touch it and be like, Wow, this architecture!,” Deas says, a little dismissively. Urban explorers take photos mainly to document that they’ve been there, while for Deas the image is the whole point. The outlaw Instagrammers have more in common with graffiti artists, another subculture of underground creatives who make their work in the cracks of the urban landscape."

This quote is probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. I know several explorers who are actually professional photographers and many more who are dedicated enough to photography to save up their money to pour in expensive gear. Everyone I know who uses Instagram (with the exception of a few photographers that use if to advertise) just snaps random photos with their cellphones. Instagram is like a photo version of Facebook. It's basically just posting a bunch of status photos saying 'hey look at me'. If they want to make a street art comparison I would say urban explorers are closer to actual artists and Instagram explorers are closer to the 13 yr old kids that spray paint penises everywhere. Though that's all assuming I consider Instagram explorers a legitimate thing. I don't follow Instagram but I don't think the quotes of those few douches really represent a vast group of explorers.

I'm not saying you can't post your photography to Instagram, I do it sometime too. But these Instagram Explorer's soul purpose is Instafame. I just post to share a photo I thought was cool with my friend's. Posting to Instagram doesn't make you and Instagram Explorer, even if you're an urban explorer posting to Instagram. You have to pretty much go out of your way to be an Instagram Explorer.

These 'instagram explorers' who only came out when IG started should just stop exploring.

Question is: I wonder what THEY think about us (not that I'd give a hoot).

"Hey, have you heard about those You-E-Ahr-Ehrs? Yeah... It's this group on the internet with a bunch of rules for their illegal activities. I think they hate us."?

a couple thoughts. i personally have no reason to be upset with them but, as others have said, if i lived in the area i'd be frustrated with good spots being blown up. also the fact that they've made comments to news agencies about what times to go and whatnot must suck for the ue-ers in the area.

on a different note i wonder if they would still be doing this if it wasnt for the attention and internet points they get. if they still would then all the power to them. if not, which i suspect, then i kind of pity them. i think most of us agree that the exploration, adventure, and scenery should be appreciated on its own, and i feel bad for people who cant see the good in that.

I feel like exploring something and posting it on Instagram is no different than exploring something and posting it on Flickr or Reddit or Facebook. You go, you take pictures, you share them with friends and the general public. If you don't like what's being posted, don't look at it.

The only irritating part of the IG exploring community, to me, is the stupid hashtags like #partnersingrime and #igdungeon. Which a lot of "legit" explorers tag their photos with too.

Yeah, there are kids who namedrop places like crazy and who comment on photos asking for location handouts/openly give location handouts to others, but that happens in every UE community.

I think there is a big difference between posting a picture on facebook just your friends (or just your explorer friends, depending on your privacy settings) can see vs. posting a picture to 50,000 instagram followers or who knows how many redditors.

I'll post a few of my favorite pictures to Instagram after explores, but even then, so what? I can understand people that do it solely for likes and all that, but don't we all like to show off what we just experienced?

In my region, very little good explores get posted on IG. It's mostly the same spots by different people. You can actually watch the cycle. One dude will takes the credit, act like Mr. Cool, then shows others the spot to show they are Mr. Cool and then you will see all the Mr. Cool followers then post the same photos. They will sometimes post little poems and sayings like "The world in my hands" or "It's views like this you wish you had", "just another day out in the world" etc. You can see their egos grow over time until it comes to the point where they consider everyone their "fans". It's all a bit ridiculous and sad, really.

I've met explorers from a ton of different places and nowhere do the people compare to those i've met on IG. In my experience, IG explorers (at least in my region) are some of the most unskilled explorers i've ever met. They really have no clue. It's actually pretty damn funny watching these kids act like they know it all and mocking others. The joke is on them. No one here really cares about IGers, they arnt even considered explorers in most cases. They are just kids with cameras trying to look cool.

Now and then you run across a cool explorer here on IG, but not very often. It is what it is.

It seems there's a bit of a trend;

People who themselves like and use instagram - "I don't give a fuck, as long as they're not destroying shit or giving out locations"

People who don't use or like instagram - "IGAF and hate those little shits"

Its really a generational thing at this point. This entire generation on the internet is obsessed with instant fame or recognition. Hash-tags, twitter feeds, twitch streams, flash in the pan you tubers. Its all about right now.

I wish it were the same case in NYC. We have kids trying to get news articles written about them climbing the George Washington or the Park Ave building and wonder why they are getting arrested. Also, them telling the media that they 'do it all the time' is one of the worst things you can say. In my opinion, IG and Flickr explorers are totally different. Flickr people dont have 20k 17 year olds commenting on their pictures whiling giving them head at the same time.

Yeah, I for sure see that out of the NYC Instagramers. There is no doubt in my mind if the media went to one of the IG kids here they would act just as immature, selfish and stupid to them as they do on IG. Complete embarrassment to explorers worldwide.

The audience on Flickr is very different. I'll post different photos on Flickr than I do on IG. Also, when I do post certain photos on Flickr I can use privacy options to make sure only those trusted can view. Interesting how it's become much more important to hide certain photos from "explorers" on IG than it is hiding them from the general public or police.

Lol This is why I love my town abandonments and spots. The few people I bring to any of my spots either A. Don't have the balls to go back, because it's too sketchy. Or B. Don't have the skill to go back, because it requires some security bypassing of some way or another. There aren't any explorers that frequent my town, so I do bring non explorer friends from time to time to share the magic with. But not ONCE has anybody gone back without me lol

We have the same situation here in Montreal where a spot is being discovered by a legit explorer, and in the next few weeks after he/she posts his/her pictures, our newsfeed are flooded with thousands of pictures of the same spot (more often thant not it's almost shot from the same point of view).

I guess it's the way it is, one finds a spot, dozens follow soon after, pretending to ''own'' the place. This is risible.

Relux is right, though: Every once in a while I stumble upon a cool, legit explorer on IG. Actually that's how I found out about Relux (his pics are pretty nice, too!)
