If nobody liked their posts, they wouldn't be posting. Think before you like.

I don't really pay attention to other people's urban exploration on instagram - but being a heavy insta user myself (mostly pictures of my dog, nature, and food) I will on occasion post a picture of a beautifully cracked wall, a broken window with the light shining through, or other pieces of abandonments that I've explored.

However; my instagram is private, and I mostly have close friends and family on it. I am in no way "hashtagging" these things and attempting to get a public following, that would just be stupid (in my opinion). I just like sharing what I see as the beauty around me with my loved ones.

I obviously don't want to (and don't) reveal the locations to non urban explorers, in fear that they won't treat the location with respect if they go, etc. I always private message friends about it if they show interest in a photo; and if they wanna go check it out one time with me as someone who knows the ropes then fine. Most of the time, people are too freaked out to go anyways.

I hate when people publicize the locations of places; that's why so many that we go to are destroyed beyond any form of recognition

In short, I think it's a bit silly to be like oh look at me look where I go and what I do, to the general public, especially when it's mostly breaking the law. But I've never seen these accounts - and if the locations aren't obvious in the photos, and they pay respect to the locations I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it. It would REALLY suck if urban exploring went hardcore mainstream though. I would be very upset. Or if these people destroy shit. If that's the case, fuck that.

But that's just my opinion!

P.S. awesome question!!!

Urban exploring since getting chased out of an abandoned barn with my mother at the age of four by an angry farmer with a pitchfork.

I know some of these characters personally, and they're not bad people in general - their hamartia is their desire for fame.

it's not so much that I have an issue with instagram as a platform, but that I just think camera phones are, generally speaking, total fucking rubbish.

I love photography, and exploring, and if given the option, I want to document my experiences to the best of my abilities and hopefully capture some interesting photos along the way. Not that it's impossible to take good photos with a cellphone, but it's hardly the ideal tool. Why would you intentionally limit yourself to hokey filters and low resolution when consumer grade DSLRs and point & shoots are cheaper than ever?

And yes, of course a phone is better than nothing, but if given the choice I cannot imagine selecting it as the preferred tool for artistic expression / historical documentation.

All of this being said, I'm probably a bit of a dinosaur in regards to social media and quite frankly do not really give two shits. These people are free to do whatever makes them happy and I wish them the best of luck. By the sounds of it they seem to be attracting quite an audience, which any artist will tell you is not the easiest of tasks.

The thing is, these guys buy $2000 DSLRs and use them exclusively to take photos to post to Instagram. And then they use the default the Instagram filters to edit their photo's.

Well I only recently got an Instagram. I'm with the IDGAF crowd. It's just another way of sharing photos. Some people that share them will be little kids trying for likes, and some will be real explorers, and some just don't really care either way. Cuz hey, abandoned buildings look cool in photos... "let's take a picture of that shit." I first and foremost am an explorer. I never took a camera with me into a building the first couple years I explored. Then I started photographing them. Then I found this place. So with my instagram, i'll occasionally post a picture of a cool hallway or rooftop view if i happen to be exploring and i get the fancy to share it. But it's not like i'm name dropping or posting tons of photos for one location or going for the specific reason of instagramming it.

Who cares? Is what i'm really trying to get to.

I use Instagram, but i use my super-shitty, outdated phone camera, not my DSLR. Uploading your "professional" photography just defeats the purpose, in my opinion.

lol I'm so out of touch with this shit I didn't even realize that you could upload pictures to Instagram from a Computer after the fact. Always just kind of assumed it was entirely phone based. If that's the case then how is it any different than sharing them on Facebook, Flickr, 500px, uer, etc?? Most of the Instagram filters I've seen people use are questionable, but if these people want to fuck up their pictures with clown-vomit who are we to judge? I hope they still have the originals

You can only post from a mobile device. They either email the photos to themselves, or post it somewhere where they can save it to their phone.

I think if they're posting images that don't show entrances, breaking and entering, etc it's not really a big deal. If they're posting photos of how they got in with GPS coordinates as a title...then I'd have an issue.

Meh, fuck 'em all. The main thing that pisses me off is when the fucking morons have their GPS on and Instagram saves that info with the photo so you can clearly see exactly where the fuckin' location is. ITS ON A FUCKIN MAP. They don't care about the locations, they just care about the popularity. Fuck 'em.

Taking ue photos for fame is contradictory to exploring in so many ways. It only accelerates the hobby into the mainstream which will eventually kill it. For important locations, I do my best to post photos that are only recognizable to people that have already been there or more often, I don't post them at all. Insta-explorers still make me want to delete my flickr in an attempt to offset the damage they cause.

I believe this is the article Phobia got the quote from: http://nymag.com/d...new-york-city.html

My favorite part about it is the one insta-explorer getting pissed at another for doing an interview.

“Of course Humza wouldn’t care because he’s already hit everything so he’s just like, Whatever I’m gonna do the interview. And that made us mad because it’s like, Wow, that’s pretty selfish. What if I wanted to hit the bridge this Friday night?”

Really, how the f can you get pissed about that when you are constantly blowing up spots to you 51k followers?!?

In with NotQuiteHuman on this one. Took the words right out of my mouth.

As for people talking about abandoned buildings, these explorers mainly just do rooftops and bridges in the city so location information is irrelevant. Even non-explorers can instantly tell where they are just based on the picture.

Too old to give a fuck or to even bother with "new" things such as Instagram.
