Pissing on a high tension tower shouldn't be a problem. Those structures are bonded to ground at the base of every tower leg and to each other through the skywire.
|
My bad; pissing on top of a tower, around the high tension lines. A novel way to go out with a bang.

| | | I don't understand why anyone would want to risk their lives trying to scale a radio tower...why? for the view? The view of those awesome towers in the pict above and getting that picture is more impressive than what it will look like up there. If it's just to be up high, why not a water tower? I was just photographing one today that caught my eye, and it has stairs all the way up! Still I'm not doing it- dont feel like being arrested for something so silly. Even less likely to want to use climbing gear and risk a fall from that height in the dark which is the only time you'd be able to do it unseen, right?

...you clearly have never done anything like this. Extremely high climbable water towers are hard to find. Vertical cranes are nice but big ones are still hard to find. The first time you climb something really high like this...you're hooked. It's terrifying but it's an incredible feeling and there is nothing to make you feel more alive. Probably no more dangerous that being close to the ones in your backyard. If it's for Satellite TV / DirectTV I wouldn't worry. If they are for something else; maybe not so safe. Stick a hotdog near it/on it and see if it cooks [last edit 5/6/2009 11:29 PM by \/adder - edited 1 times]

The last tower I was at had signs on the fence (which were of course, faded away) "BACKGROUND RF EXPOSURE REACHES UNSAFE WORKING LEVELS ABOVE _____ FEET" Look for signs around the tower. There will be warning signs. Prevents tower operators from getting sued as much.

Yes. That's a Cell Tower. See above post. I'm not sure what type of tower Lord's is though.

| | | That looks like some kind of government microwave site. I take it this is in Canada somewhere? The only towers I've seen quite like that are US government owned, here in the Washington DC area. Stairs would be a lot safer than ladders if you ask me. As usual, you'd only get fried if you climbed in front of a dish or horn. edit: closeup pictures: http://www.emporis...n/wm/bu/?id=230696 Since it's Bell all those horns are probably long dead. | | | If I read the previous posts correctly, TV towers can be climbed, but have ridiculously high voltages running through them. So one stray touch = dead. So I guess they're climbable, but probably better to stick with microwaves or cell towers. Or if you want no health risk, water towers. I've seen massive ones along the interstates around here. But they're always surrounded by tons of barbed wire and plenty of "Government property no trespassing" signs. Also, question about the tower on the picture I posted: It's hard to tell from the picture, but would there be any kind of landing up there where I could rest? Or is it just a big ladder? Because if it is I need to get myself some climbing equipment if I want to go through with this. Well i really should get some anyway...

If there is; there wouldn't be much room.
I'm using a $90 Harness ($47.99 Shipped: Ebay.) (2) 10' Sections of 8mm Rope. Per each rope I tie a figure-8 at both end, carabiner each end to the side D-rings. then tie another figure-8 knot in the middle which I use to attach myself to the tower. My gear is in my car; but I'll post pics of my climbing setup tomorrow if anyone wants to see. I paid more for my climbing shoes. (5.10 Freerunners) than I did for my entire fall protection setup. TV towers are NOT mast radiators, so the tower itself will not be the main conductor of RF energy. A simple proof of this can be done with the wave equation of 1000/F(MHz) = wavelength in feet. TV channel 2, the lowest TV frequency in the US, broadcasts at 54 MHz, making a wavelength of 19 feet. Channel 13's wavelength is only 4.8 feet, and UHF channels range from 2'6" to 1'1". Thus, a 1000-foot TV tower, if it were a mast radiator, would be many times longer than the wavelength, leading to standing waves and phasing interference...the signal would be ineffective, and the tower would quickly heat to melting. However, if there is any flaw in the insulation on the cables that carry the 5 megawatts of power up to a UHF transmitter (or 500 kW to a VHF transmitter), major RF burns are in order for any unfortunate climber who touches it.

That one is kinda similar but the one in my pic if you dropped it from a helicopter or something a full sized car could be parked on top of it its really freaking big
