Any tower facility (no matter what size or location) is highly watched by local PD, Homeland Security, and tower site crew/owners (including myself).

i have yet to see any homeland security officers lurking around anywhere i like to climb. if they're too busy to watch massive suspension bridges where an attack at the right time could cost hundreds of lives, i really don't think they're too concerned about a few communications towers.

98% of cops are oblivious to anything more than fifteen feet above street level. and once the sun goes down, it's gonna take more than a casual glance to spot me.

Here's some tower prons: Lots of photos of military personnel in harnesses installing some radio gear as part of technical training:

And yeah, I've got 9 years experience with tower sites and RF equipment, including several certs. But whatever... Your life.

Whoopee, looking back in this thread there are RF technicians giving a thumbs up to tower climbing. Like all adventures it is a calculated risk. You can hate or you can help.

^ You sure that's not a radiating tower? It looks like the kind that they use for Radio Station broadcasts ... i.e. you climb, you DIE!

It's a local TV station tower. Not sure what else they may have on it though.

I see an FM/TV broadcast antenna on the top.

On top of an abandonment:

Definitely NOT meant to be climbed. It was kinda wobbly. And by that, I mean it moved a LOT. Aurelie went higher than me, so she can tell us all about that.

That's pretty insane Craig! Now the building was abandoned, but are you sure the tower wasn't in use? I see lots of antennas and hardline.

She's dead as a doornail, the dish and the antenna. I'm kind of sorry that my antenna shot cut the guy wires due to picture stitching...but it shows what's going on at least!

We found TWO long lines at one location. Pretty Fucking Rare There.

Posing with the larger of the two.

We should have checked the wind advisory for the day. At 120' and still having pretty good hill cover, the wind was blowing a steady "breeze" of 15-25MPH. It got real bad, real fast. I've got too much shit to climb in the future to die here. I didn't want to risk my camera for mid-tower shots. So these are all from the ground/surrounding auxiliary building shots. When Punk gets his shots up ... I'll post a few up-highs.

Can anyone identify what type of tower this and/or what it might be used for?
i know it's not the best picture.
the location of the tower leads me to believe that it is no longer being used for anything, and i'd like to climb it next time i get the chance.

If I had to guess, AM radio; it doesn't have any obvious radiating beams/dishes at the top, which would make the mast the radiating device. This will shock/burn you badly if you touch it and it's active! It's also possible that the tower is abandoned, and the business end of it was removed at some point (for example, if the TV station moved to a taller/more centrally located tower during the switch to digital)

It's an FM or AM translator station. In other words, it repeats/relays and covers a greater area than where the station antenna is located. Sometimes TV stations would use these (back in analog days) to cover a larger area.

The tower wouldn't have that many guy lines if it was used as an antenna structure. But if you look closely, you'll see baluns or insulators near the top of the tower/guy lines. This prevents the tower from using the ground as another antenna or groundplane.

And at the very top, would be a box or small antenna with the relay inside. If active, it's like sending cellular waves into your body (think fried chicken), which is why many stations advertise system tests and coverage disruptions. They shut the tower down so that the climbers can climb the tower safely.

Example from above question: See the baluns and black box on the tower? This is a translator or relay station, which uses the entire tower to repeat the signal.

And yeah, these types are not meant for climbing. FYI...
