That looks like some kind of government microwave site. I take it this is in Canada somewhere? The only towers I've seen quite like that are US government owned, here in the Washington DC area. Stairs would be a lot safer than ladders if you ask me. As usual, you'd only get fried if you climbed in front of a dish or horn.

edit: closeup pictures: http://www.emporis...n/wm/bu/?id=230696

Since it's Bell all those horns are probably long dead.

well there is one exactly like this at Eglinton and Warden (ish) in Scarborough.. the one you sent the link to was only three sided and the one I want is even bigger at 4 sides

but climbing up one safe? k

BASE jumpers know a lot about this, they've been illegally climbing all kinds of shit for decades. You're best bet is to read up on their forums, maybe try and make a friend or two.

So what about climbing towers in the rain? (Rain, not thunderstorms.)

I'll have to report back on that one, Nice weather all day, all drive down here. I get to my friends dorm, step out of the car and Viola! Instant Rain! If it doesn't die down in about 20 minutes I'm saying "fuck it" and climbing anyways.

Report Back: I never found out... We split the gear up equally, I made the mistake of making my friend carry my $100 parkour shoes in his pack. We get to the tower, the contents fall out. We go through everything...I'm missing the left shoe (why is it always the left shoe?). So we deduced it mus have fallen out earlier. Luckily, I lost my hoodie at the same time (which was in the pack). The sweatshirt was the key to finding the other shoe. A black/silver sweatshirt is easy to find, a lone green/gray shoe is not.

They fell out of the pack within 1000 feet of the tower; but we spent 3&1/2 hours searching through a square mile of woods for them.

At least we now know the location is completely insensitive. We spend 4 hours in there with super bright LED flashlights, yelling at one another; and cheering after the shoe was found.

We ended up both being so exhausted, and completely soaked; we figured we'd quit while we were ahead. But imagine getting busted...

Probably just me being paranoid....but are roof top satellite dishes safe to be near...The ones on skyscrapers and such....

Those are 100% safe if only downlinks, possibly worse if uplinks... but they are focused at the sky and of little concern.

There were pictures on here from Canada of uplink dishes pointed at close to the horizon; that would be an issue. Canada being far north needs an extremely low angle to get at the "Clarke belt" above the equator where satellites orbit. Also some transcontinental "birds" will bounce signals for which the sending and receiving dishes need to be nearly horizontal.

Uplink could be 2-way internet or a news or network hub. Downlinks would be TV reception etc. Even some TV /radio stations are downlink only if they have nothing to contribute to the network.

The more powerful uplink dishes will have amplifiers with heatsinks near the LNB area... can take a couple thousand watts. As with other RF stuff the fatter cables should scare you. DLs will have dinky LNBs with simple RG-6 type cable, less than a cm in diameter.

This is the Pharmacy Switch, a Bell Canada SS7 STP. The long haul microwave is no longer used, as its all fiber there now. Not to say that nothing is active on the tower, of course.

Modify a cheap radar detector to run on batteries and it will detect a lot of what you are looking for. Get one without sophisticated interference rejection and false alarm prevention devices. $35 special is what you are looking for.

11GHz is common, as is 16, 22, 26. Those are all common frequencies. 11 for terrestrial, higher for orbital communication.

Or maybe not...
This is worthless. Look at the frequencies it operates at. What are you trying to detect, your neighbor's wi-fi? It's WAY too sensitive and it's at the wrong frequency range.

I know a guy who soldered an LED to one of those small rubber wifi antennas.

The LED would illuminate due to the induction from the radio waves. The brighter it was, the less time you want to stay there.

Same problem though with the LED. Safe exposure time depends on frequency. Frequencies of 2000-10000MHz can have a more thermal effect while higher frequencies may have more of an "irradiative" effect.

You really need to know what frequency you are getting hit with. There are devices for RF monitoring for communications workers that cost a few hundred dollars which can tell you the approximate frequency range and strength. Some better ones can even tell you a time threshold for safety.

You crazy? I love freestanding ladders. They're a lot safer than the "Bolt Rung Ladders" that typically the smaller* freestanding cell towers and monopole towers employ. Wait until you hit a rusted bolt that bends under your foot! Just a side note: I have noticed if it's marked with the FCC's obstruction marking paint "aviation orange and white" there is a reasonable certainty it has a physical ladder. If it is left unpainted there is a good chance (though not guaranteed) it will have the "bolt rung" ladders.

*Smaller not to be taken literally (small enough to escape the FCC Obstruction Marking Codes.); they can still be huge!

JBTXK, Vicarious: Incredible., and way too dangerous for me. Pardon the pun but the "looking straight down" shots should not be viewed while hungover. (scary) Keep climbing, ...more photos please. (and be carefull)
