| | *New* Tunnel location! (Ottawa) < on 2/1/2006 8:08 PM >
| | | Well, for anybody who loves tunnels and drains as much as I do, you should go and check out the construction sites near the new war museum in LeBreton flats. They are laying pipe-lines down and there is one in specific that's very easy to find, and has many entrances. The tunnel itself is completely enclosed and dark, so you'll definately need flashlights, or not bring them an experience some wild sensory deprivation! The tunnel itself runs for about 2.5kilometers and seems to turn off into other tunnels that I have not had the chance to explore yet. I definately encourage you to scout out the area first, as they may have finally closed off the tunnel entrances, though I doubt it. Also, be wary of construction workers during the day, go at night if you can! The construction area is extremely hard to miss! Just keep lookin'. There are places I've been, and places I want to be but nowhere I won't go. |

Those tracks would be the O-Train line. Watch for Talents...

| | | Anyone know if there are cameras??? The ventilation building is located half-way in the park by the arboretum. That would be one cool place to x-plore.

| | | There are cameras on the O-Train platforms. I don't believe there are any cameras in the tunnel. The biggest risk is getting run over by a train. It would be a bad idea to attempt the tunnel during O-Train operating hours.

Methinks a night visit would work. The south portal near Cartoon U is safer, for sure. If the work on the O-train expansion gets under way this year, there will be no trains at all at any time. The tunnel is to be widened, so some cool construction pix might be do-able when the workers are gone.

If I remember correctly, I read that during construction they widened the tunnel to incorporate a platform for emergency evacuations. I think it'd be a little tight, but feasible. [last edit 12/9/2006 4:03 PM by firequall - edited 1 times]

In their native European habitats, type 643 Talents will reach their design speed of 120km/h. In O-Train service, they are limited to around 80km/h. The 643s 'look fast' because they were styled after the ICE 3, which does 330km/h in service.

| | | This tunnel is under Dow's Lake, and should be explorable between 12:30 and 5:30am. It's damn near impossible for me to get out at that time!

| | | I got in there this morning between trains. The south portal is your best bet, but remember that your biggest window during operating hours is the 10 minutes between the northbounds and the next southbound. I made sure not to be seen by passing trains while I was on the property, even if I was out of harm's way. Just having an employee see you down there might get the transit cops alerted. I would recommend entering the property right after a northbound, and getting in and out in 5 minutes. At night it might be easier to linger, but then you have the risk of a maintenance crew seeing you. Next time I'll dash to the ventilation shaft and back to see if there is a hiding place in there. That would make it easier to stick around for the next window of opportunity. Although I didn't see a camera at the portal, that doesn't mean there aren't any other methods of getting caught. I'm sure they would charge you for trespassing AND give you a big fine for being down there. It was still very cool tho.

| | | I have been through the Dow's Lake tunnel many times back in the late 80s and early 90s. At that time it was still CP Rail property and there was no real security to speak of. Back then the tunnel was even more fun because most of the lights where burned out and there was a thin wall of water coming down from one of the seams directly under the lake. It was a really cool place to bring people to freak them out. The sound of a yell at one end of the tunnel gets bizarrely distorted by the time it gets to the other end. Come to think of it, I did have a picture from back then but since I haven't seen those negs for years I don't expect they will turn up anytime soon.
The end of the beginning is the beginning of the end. |

| | | Detroit : Right now it's not security relatively speaking, it's more of the trains passing... Oh and by the way, O-Train tracks (including Dow's lake tunnel) are still CP or CN Rail's property
