| | | Posted by ty21 In my opinion (although it's probably not what you want to hear) your best weapon is to be able to talk yourself out of situations. Most 'undesirables' you meet while exploring are pretty harmless and the ones that aren't usually want to steal something so if you nothing to steal there's nothing for them to really care about. Sometimes you do come across those psychos though but even then a brisk run will usually outpace whatever crack they're on. So I'd say keep the hornet spray but be prepared more for what you'll say not what you'll do.
| If I think someone is hostile I don't say a word unless it's a warning like 'Get the fuck out of here!'. Muggers will engage you in talk to gauge and distract you some times. Putting your hand in a pocket is a mistake. How you carry yourself is worth a thousand useless words... however sweet talking or cursing works well most times with dogs (and they can sense fear). Each situation is different but your goal is the same; to avoid spilling anyone's blood. Hornet spray is a bad plan and more useless junk to pack. A good solid oak walking stick is far better. You can also easily out run any hornet or bee; their top flight speed is 16 mph. The sooner you spot potential trouble, the better. Distance is both a buffer zone and also gives you more time to think if they are closing. Use it wisely and don't freeze up... look for escapes and weaknesses/weapons then act. Anger is more useful than fear; you even run better when angry than when afraid.

| | | Posted by SirTopRamen In the end, I think the best thing you could possibly do is always have an out. Always have at least 2 ways you can run out of the situation. I do carry a knife but I treat it more like a tool. I think any situation you get in where you need to defend yourself, a 3 in knife is gonna be the last thing you want. Just run. But if you are already bringing a camera with you, get the heaviest tripod you can find. No cop is gonna consider a tripod a weapon and that thing can definitely do some damage while also giving you a little more range than a knife.
| A heavy tripod or even a light extended one will limit your ability to run fast unless you drop it. Catch 22. One potential issue with using a pole weapon is your opponent grabbing hold of it. A tripod is a cumbersome pole weapon, ok for dogs. What about your gear? Is it light enough and secured well enough to run fast? Many times the answer is no. If you got a heavy cam/lense in your hand, you have a weapon. A Mark3 with a 70-200 f/2.8 lense is heavy and even if blocked will hurt. I would purposely keep it gripped by the barrel and close to my chest at times when street shooting. If someone wanted it... they get it, repeatedly. Again if you're going somewhere were you think you'll need a weapon, you shouldn't be going there.
