I can... It's too close for many to draw a weapon and use it in time to stop a knife strike. In 8 seconds or so I can cover 50 yards from a dead start. As soon as they are reaching for it you need to be in a jog ready to sprint at least... or fight.
| That's impressive; I guess I should amend 'youre' with 'most people'. Personally I choose GTFO as a first defense; I don't have the reflexes or the training. I used to have a boss who was ex-military (army, as I recall) who used to say, "Never pull a blade on someone unless you're confident that you can digest it." In exploring, my little pocketknife is a tool, as I'm sure it would cause all kinds of intestinal havoc for me. I have a CCW, but don't carry my piece exploring because a) don't want to lose my permit if I'm caught, and b) the obvious issues involved in having to use it, and explain why, while engaging in (possible, if not probable) trespassing. I guess I've been lucky; what few confrontations I've had have ended well, and my gut's pretty good about getting me out before fighting is the only option.

| Rule #1, people are trouble. Best to hear, see or smell them -first- and observe. That should be in the back of your mind at all time. Stealth is the best weapon. Secure the site then stay alert, make it a habit to scan periodically for people. Minimize your time in open and exposed areas. Keep your noise level to a minimum. Cigs are easy to smell even a block downwind. Take your time; you spot people easier from a good vantage point and by staying still. People tend to be noisy and many times that's how I know they are there; investigate noises discretely. Most times people you run across are harmless but sometimes not. Any vandals or scrappers I spot, get tagged... a stone cold pleasure. Ghost hunters, if they don't spot me I try to give them what they want & Avoid areas or times when you feel there will be people trouble... Predawning a site many times will give you easier entry and at least a couple hours of daylight to splore in peace. And that is well worth the trouble.

FYI - I believe you can lose your permit whether your carrying at the time you're caught or not (might be state specific - worth looking up.)
| Iowa - If you get convicted of a felony, you're permanently disqualified from owning any firearms. If you're convicted of a misdemeanor, you're illegible to have a carry permit for 3 years. Note that in Iowa, it's a "permit to carry weapons", not a "concealed carry permit". You have the option to carry your weapon open or concealed with the same permit. The permit also allows you to carry non-firearm weapons like a switchblade knife, blackjack, kubaton, etc.. The permits are issued by your county sheriff and some sheriffs are douchebags about permits. Iowa is now a "shall issue" state and it's much better than it used to be. They still require training, but the class can be taken online. If you have a DD-214, that's all you need to prove training. When Iowa was a "may issue" state, it was ridiculous. Some sheriffs said: "sure, no problem" [Iowa County], others said: "no" to everyone [Johnson County], others required "campaign contributions" (pay him a bribe) {Marion County}, others had ridiculous* training requirements [Polk, Dallas, Guthrie Counties}. * by "ridiculous training", they only accepted a certificate from one instructor in the entire state. His class was 12 hours long, was limited to 10 people and was only given 4 times a year.
