If you don't know how to use it, a knife can quickly become the weapon of your enemy.
|
Yeah, tell this to people that were not member of the armed forces for quite some time. Make sure you cut vital areas of the enemy, this includes arms (stops his attacks), chest, face and everything you can cut. stabbing might sound good, but cutting is better for an ongoing fight. If the other person blocks, he will still be cut in the arm, leg, hand, whatever he blocks with.
This of course is only for educational purpose!

Forget the face. Reverse grip. Close the distance, base of neck, neck, arteries., kidneys, lungs, liver. One well placed stab and the fight is done. Knife fighting is messy, up close and personal. I recommend you avoid it whenever possible.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

If you can land one stab before the other one can land ten cuts. Yeah as I said this was for educational purpose only. Don't do it.

You don't allow them to, take the offense at first opportunity. Reverse grip, blade out. Close the distance fast, chin down, get right on top of them. A couple lacerations are nothing. More thoughts on this: http://www.thehigh...x.php/t-14120.html

I had a class in Kali, and in case you don't know what this us, follow this video: http://www.youtube...Rs&feature=related Sticks are there trainings weapons, I saw some videos where they used knifes, and my instructor had some interesting injuries from these trainings sessions with real weapons. Do you see this girl stabbing anybody? In this Filipino Martial Art, you win by cutting the enemy in small pieces, one at a time. I don't think that you could get any stab through, when someone cuts your arm every time you try to stab.

Watch Bruce Lee, she's slow. Realize that Lee is pulling all his punches, stick hits, and the fight scenes are shot at 40 fps rather then the standard 36 fps, even then he blurs of of sight many times. That's exactly why you don't stay on the outside especially with that type of fighter. Take the hits, bear hug them, go for the kidneys, liver, lungs, or take them to the ground, pin their arm in between your body and theirs; gain control of the knife arm, reverse grip and hack/stab at easy vitals to hit. You can punch with the knife hand and use the blunt end of the knife in close quarter to make sharp hits to the skull and other boney areas.
Your security measures were inadequate. How unfortunate for you. |

| | | I don't generally care about my self-defence in these days due to legal reasons, but last fall I had to carry this while exploring. I hate to admit, but it kind of made me feel safe. [last edit 2/21/2012 3:32 PM by Tupsumato - edited 3 times]

OMG WANT! or A Clockwork Orange style sword cane would do. I have never been in a situation where I needed to protect myself, yet. thankfully! I did get followed by a schizophrenic homeless man when I was leaving a location once. I had a few friends with me & after he wouldn't listen to reason we just jogged away. He wasn't moving very fast. If the time comes when I need to defend myself & the assailant has not decided to be cool and smoke a bowl with me i plan on bashing the person over the head with my flash light and running like hell. As far as getting attacked by an animal goes, I'm screwed. But in my 'hood I could get mauled by a mountain lion just taking my rubbish out to the bin.

| | | I think the apparent obsession with "defense" (especially using deadly weapons )topic is ridiculous... you're unlikely to be attacked by anyone, never mind in the uninhabited locations in which exploring takes place. Second, it's a bit concerning reading all the "knife fighting" posts. Knife fighting doesn't exist, the blades are too short and if your "opponent" has a knife either one of you will run away or you'll both get cut. I usually have a couple knives on me but they all have small blades in the 4-inch range and are used for daily tasks. Knives for protection is a stupid idea. A big stick would work better and get you in less trouble.

There are very few, if any, reasons to explore with a weapon in an urban environment. It's just going to get you in more trouble if the law finds you. If I was up against bears, I wouldn't be satisfied with a couple four inch blades.

This. And in many places if you are committing a crime,(trespassing), even if you are legally carrying, you can get an additional charge for carrying a gun... besides, bear mace has been proven more effective than anything if that is your concern. A phone, your feet, and worst case scenario your fists or utility knife are the only things you need to be safe. And the last two should only be used when you are being attacked. Being aware of your surroundings is the key. And no, I am not some super-lib that hates guns, I despise living in the only state without concealed carry, but exploring and weapons just do not mix. | | | Posted by tribeachpunk I'm sure it's a requirement from time to time. |
Make that all time time. It is very unlikely that you will encounter a polar bear in Svalbard if you don't specifically go looking for them - I didn't see any during my stay there even though I spent a lot of time outside the settlements - but if you don't have a rifle and a flare gun when you meet one, it will kill you. That's why everyone takes a gun with them when they head out, even if just for a short walk, and every student in the university goes to the shooting range on the first day. Still, UNIS staff has never shot a polar bear for self defense - flare guns are usually enough to scare them off - and only 1-2 are killed yearly on the whole island, usually very far from Longyearbyen. I would never take a gun with me for exploring in my home country. Even if it wasn't illegal, there would be no need. On Svalbard I would never explore without a gun. It might even be illegal as you're not allowed to die on the island...

How can you attack someone who just gave you candy? also a pack of smokes is always good. Honestly if i ever got in a scuffle, most of the places i've been to have ample debris on the floor that would make wonderful beat sticks. I'm more inclined to just book it out of there though. Good chance I wont win a fistfight but i doubt the hobo/meth cooker/ scary guy is a distance runner so i'm more confident i could outrun the guy.
It's not the smokes makin' me sick, It's standing out in the cold to smoke em' |
