I just got a quick reminder about the true nature of this neighborhood. A guy who walked past me hit a trash can with his knife and complained about it being so dull that it won't go through anything anymore. His friend asked "Not even skin?"

Who hits a trash can with a knife? No wonder his knife is dull...

It was a plastic one, but you do have a point. Also, idiots like that guy tend to buy shitty knives. After all, there are those that can be used to cut through the hull of a downed helicopter...

Yup, I'm surprised at what people will do to knives... I once was examining one of the worst knives I have ever held, blade rattling in the frame, unfinished plastic scales, etc, and made a remark about it... next thing I know another customer says "looks good to me" and lays down $25 for the thing.

And then there are the people who buy a new knife when their old one gets dull... it's possible to get quite a nice knife for $10, and it's possible to get a junker for 50. I've done both. People can be stupid though.

I would no longer spend $25 on a knife. I'd either spend $100+ or $1.

Lately I've been purchasing 6 or 10 of the $1 Walmart folding knives. Half-straight-half-serrated. I use them for mine exploring and rope activities and at work. Because if I drop one down a mineshaft or lose it, I JUST DONT CARE.

They still cut rope, they still cut string, they still cut what I need them to cut. They're cheap enough that you CAN just buy another one when it gets dull.

I actually like and prefer well-made knives. I loved my Emerson, and my Benchmade, and my Spyderco. They've all disappeared into the mists in one fashion or another. The Emerson got dropped accidentally down a 1500ft deep mineshaft while ascending up out of it from the first 300ft. No ladders. I'd like to go get it some day, see if it survived the fall.

But until then, the $1 Walmart folding knife serves the purpose I need it for, that previously the $100+ knives served. No complaints.

I don't NEED to cut through the side of a downed helicopter, I don't NEED to puncture the side of a plastic trashcan. I just occasionally need to cut things when I need to cut them... and they work for that.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

The problem with me buying a $150 knife is that I have limited funds at the moment... besides, Customs has snatched a couple of my knives so I am wary of ordering from the States these days.

I like my $30-50 knives because they perform well enough for me and can hold a nice edge for quite a time with some stropping, plus I don't mind when the clip gets scratched to hell rolling around on an ashpalt roof or something. At the same time I don't want to damage the edge.

I usually carry two knives, one is a cheap one I use for anything that will damage the edge on a better knife. It's actually one of my favorite ones because I don't hesitate to use it.

If you need to cut your arm off, you'd better have something better than a dull no-name multi-tool!

I would imagine even WITH a good pocket knife you'd have some difficulty.

A bone saw would help, I suppose.

WHAT IF....Darth Vader came down out of the sky and wanted to have man-sex and you said no, and you needed a strong knife to fend off his plasteel-armored advances.

I used to keep a Mora in my backpack but I lost it. I don't think the school would have appreciated it either.

I know a guy who works as a go-go dancer in a gay club and he fended off a mugger by throwing a cup of hot coffee in his face and running away... anything works.

Anything works, but what would've worked in Tupsumato's or my story short of cybernetic rear-view mirrors?

Posted by Goosey

Yes, true. Our lower gun crime rate may be due in part to that, but also cultural, social and economic factors.

You're absolutely right. Nobody really has a good explanation for why the US has such a high crime rate, but at this stage I do suspect that tighter gun control wouldn't help (beyond banning assault rifles and anything more powerful of course).

Nothing would have helped once they were jumped, although practicing being alert and observant could have helped if they had spotted a threat beforehand. Although it gets the best of us... "Wild Bill" Hickok was known for always scanning the area and sitting with his back to a wall, but was finally shot in the back of the head during a game of cards.

When guns are outlawed...only the cops and criminals have guns. Cuz criminals don't pay attention to laws anyway.

As you said, it wouldn't help at all. All it would do is disarm the citizenry, and criminals would know that they could do as they please without a great likeliness of private citizens being able to stop them.

We have one of the highest legal guns-per-capita ratio in the world, and yet using guns for self-defence is highly illegal and will likely result in losing your guns, heavy fines and/or jail time. Self-defence also not an acceptable argument for obtaining a firearm permit. It's also illegal to carry a gun in public without a good reason or without a cover that hides it, or carry one around while it's loaded, or just play with it in some unacceptable way, or...

Personally, I prefer our way. The gun owners are generally the most responsible citizens because the first thing the police will do if you break the law is to take your guns, and no-one wants that as they tend to cost thousands of dollars apiece. It's much better than every damn redneck getting an arsenal...

I'm still pondering about applying for a licence now that I got my hunter's permit. A .22 pistol would be ideal, but it's next to impossible to get one now, so I might settle down for a twin-barreled 12-cal shotgun. It's just a pain in the ass to shoot an animal in a trap when you have to walk far away so that you won't disintegrate your expensive hunting equipment...

(I admit that it would be nice if I could get a firearm more easily - I really like shooting on the range with a good rifle - but I guess it's better in this way.)

The only thing I take that can be considered a weapon is hot cappuccino. I am terrified of wild dogs and have often wondered what I would do if I came across any.

Do you think maybe a pocket knife would be a good idea?

Not unless you want your face torn off. Big walking stick.

(Although you should be carrying a pocket knife as a utility tool anyways! Shame on you)

A 12-cal shotgun? I've never even heard of one of those. Perhaps you have a picture of one???
