Battery Townsley was named in honor of Major General Clarence Townsley, who had served during WW-I & had later been the Superintendent of the Army's West Point Military Academy. General Townsley died in 1928.

The carriage pit for Gun # 2 was located at the end of this corridor which is open at both ends. The only reason the corridor exists was to allow the 68 foot long, 153.5 ton gun barrel to be put into place.
