This isn't *the* throne room, it's just known as 'the throne-room' (because of the throne). The king's throne was in the so-called Megaron, the hall. Very similar to the layout of this room, but much bigger, and with a huge hearth in the center. The Megaron doubled as the courtyard, and its hearth provided heat to the second floor where the bedrooms where.

wow, the art in there is amazing. i wish it was still completely intact (it appears to be missing a bit on the right).

I believe the art is restoration of the original frescoes. Most of the Minoan and Mycenean frescoes are removed from their original locations and taken to museums. You can see some of them in the Archeological Museum in Athens. Paint (even fresco stuff) fades with time, and we're talking about paint from 3,200 to 3,400 years ago.
