Description
The Loyalist Memorial near Upper Canada Village includes a display of tombstones from some of the cemeteries flooded by the Seaway works.

At the request of next of kin, Ontario Hydro reinterred about 2000 graves before inundation day. These tombstones belong to Loyalist settlers now resting at the bottom of Lake St. Lawrence.

Something similar was done at the reservoir near my home, but the bodies stared popping up. So they reburied them and piled rocks on top of them. Rather cold.

Where's this? I'd like to read about it.

Alum Creek Reservoir just north of Columbus Ohio. It's kind of a spring ritual.

Thanks. I 'marked unread' your comment notification message so as to remind me to read up about this at a more convenient time. Cheers!

Right back at ya! It's kind of surprising to be buzzing down the road and see the coroner parked at the water's edge. Most of the graves are toward the east side of the reservoir. And the description above about the Loyalist Memorial sounds exactly like what happened at Alum Creek. My grandson took two of the stones home - he thought they were ghosts in the rocks and they would fly around his room.

Very interesting reading around that reservoir. I remember reading that for the St. Lawerence River project, the authorities placed concrete slabs on top of the burial sites to prevent just such an occurrence. I guess the Corps of Engineers forgot to consult with Ontario Hydro on that issue.

Concrete slabs would probably have worked better at Alum Creek. The rocks disappeared, so once again we are all waiting for spring and the ritualistic popping up of the bodies.
