     History
The Halifax County Regional Rehabilitation Centre closed it's doors in Spring 2002. The centre was located off of Bisset Road in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, and it was owned by the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The hospital and its land was leased to Trailer Park Boys Productions who shot their weekly television show on the premises next to the abandoned building until some time in 2009.

On November 9, 2010 Halifax City Council approved the demolition of rehab centre. The demolition of the hospital was considered a 'shovel ready' project by the NS government and was to cost $2-million dollars and create 23 jobs.

Before the demolition could begin, on November 27, 2010, a fire set by teenagers destroyed the rehab centre's gymnasium.

The entire facility was demolished throughout 2011. The demolition went $150 000 over budget and was delayed when unexpected contaminants, including asbestos, hydro-carbons and bio-medical waste, were discovered on the site.

Clean-up of the unexpected contaminants will continue into 2012. CBC has reported the city intends to cap the contaminated area as trucking the material off site for disposal would cost another $500,000.
     Media Coverage
  • CBC: Asbestos, medical waste add $150K to demo job (Dec 12, 2011)
  • Halifax mental health facility closing, no clear plan for relocation says union (April 15, 2002)

  •  Future Plans
December 2011: Hazardous materials were discovered buried during the demolition of the rehab centre. Clean-up of the contaminated area will continue in 2012. The contamination will be capped on-site.
