Hopefully a fever is all you caught from me =P lol.

I'm almost 100% sure by now that the mineral we were mining out of that vein is Galena. Which, boys and girls, is mostly LEAD; the reason it's so heavy. Galena though, is also known as the "ore of silver" (as opposed to silver in its pure, native form). Galena usually has a "high" silver content (though this can vary widely as far as actual percentage goes).

The other possibility is that it is a lead/molybdenum/silver compound. Apparently the geology professor I was to get in touch with has been pretty busy with midterms and the related workload of that; but says he'd like to get together with me soon to look things over. So hopefully soon I'll know for sure what it is.

THat having been said... you realize that for it to be worth anything, you'll have to crush it down to fine powder, then run it through a series of chemistry processes in order to isolate and extract the silver content. I've been studying the processes, they're not what I'd call "simple", but if I can get my stuff through it with decent results I'd be happy to pass it on to ya guys. Chances are you'll put more $$ into extracting the silver than what it's cost is actually valued at.

Or you could just hold onto it cuz it's pretty, and know what potential it has locked inside, even if you're not really willing to go to the work to release it. =)

I'll let you know!

Even if it is silver it'll probably just sit in an old shoe box in the garage collecting dust until I stumble upon it years later and remember the good ol' days.

I'm not sure how we'd possibly go deeper. If there's a deeper hole out there though, I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

oh btw... ITS NOT GALENA, ITS STIBNITE!!!

Which means those shiny heavy rocks we brought back are antimony, not silver. The structure, scratch test, appearance, and everything else are VERY similar. But galena has a very noticeable cubic structure.
I met up with the geo professor over at the college today, and we compared it to other known samples from the lab pull out trays. The stibnite sample matches it PERFECTLY, even to the reddish coloring of the surrounding stuff on it. While you could tell the galena *looks* similar, but is definitely more cubic.

I donated a sample, and they added it to the collection and marked where it came from.

Looks like the geo proff and I are going out mine-hunting maybe next weekend!

Wow, you guys are awesome.

One suggestion though: I'd minimize any talk about dynamite, especially in conjunction with where it is, or else a bored Joint Terrorism Task Force could decide to come talk to you.

The muslim terrorists would have to be pretty stupid to salvage old dynamite from mines, but guess what -- they're mostly pretty stupid. This same sort of concern is why some Army Corps of Engineers records about long-closed military sites have been pulled off the net -- because they mapped out where old, unexploded ordnance had been spotted.

*Therrin gestures at the interwebz as a whole and says, "Bring it" *

Any cops or Homeland Security dudes (or even gals, preferably hot ones) wanna know where 3 sticks of literally 100 year old dynamite is, I'd be happy to tell you. In fact, I'd even be happy to show you. You have my IP, feel free to contact me.

My guess... they have far worse things to be spending 8 hrs worth of round trip, about 3/4 mile walk inside a mountain, and down several levels to a few hundred feet underground... for 3 lousy sticks who's grease has probably evaporated long ago, as it's known to do over time.
Over "time", it becomes unstable. Over SHITLOADS of time, it dissipates, leaks out, sinks into the dirt evaporates, etc. I'm not saying I'd put it in my mouth for a picture (like ONE guy I heard of), but still. Gimme a break dude.

The muslim terrorists would have to be pretty stupid to salvage old dynamite from mines, but guess what -- they're mostly pretty stupid.

Was it stupidity that allowed a coordinated attack using passenger airplanes from different areas to strike a massive blow against the USA which claimed thousands of lives?

I'd imagine they'd be far more interested in military grade UXO than the picture we posted.

What a great time!!! Though it turned out to be a smaller crowd, it resulted in a more intimate gathering where we were not rushed and could easily change the itinerary. Calico and Tecopa turned out to be our main explorations. There is video of me knocking my head into a cieling and bouncing backwards onto the floor that will sure to be released shortly.

Sorry guys, I just found this thread! Silly me. I uploaded my pics to my Photobucket page: http://s679.photob...ndLegacy/allalbums
See Columbia Nmbr 2, Grant and Noonday, and War Eagle albums.

My internet's been super-slow this week, so the videos are taking forever to upload. Here's what I have so far:
War Eagle: http://www.youtube...atch?v=toI2rk4wP8w
Grant Interview: http://www.youtube...atch?v=pGtv9mbJu8c
Noonday 1: http://www.youtube...atch?v=ccvpVEaw614
Noonday 2: http://www.youtube...atch?v=lxHdJ3_PIzA

Still waiting on Noonday Cave System and Columbia vids! Damn slow interweb! Ill post links when they're up.

Oh yea, and I do have the head bashing video Rob, it's hilarious. Will post soon. GREAT trip guys!!

Hell yea! Let's do it Rob. I wouldn't mind squeezing back down the Columbia shaft for more mine goodness. I KNOW it's on the top of your list!

Thanks for sharing Matt! It was fun too see myself in the War Eagle. I may have missed it in all the noonday footage - is the cave in there somewhere?

The cave connects the the east underground workings of the Noonday, but the actual cave is located in the north end of the wash that runs under the tressle, behind Noonday on the east side.

I think Dav was talking about the cave video, and yes, it's coming. It's a separate video. And Rob's head smashing video will be up soon as well! I have to admit, it's pretty funny.
