Peace Dove Planning Thread

So, I have gotten a couple emails/PM's regarding planning for this trip. What to bring, what not to bring, etc. So, I am going to put the list of suggested items in here, a long with a sampling of what will be coming with me.

Equipment Recommendations:
-Water, lots of water. Buy gallon bottles of water at the store, and freeze them. Use them as block ice to keep you food fresh. Fill in extra space with cubes. Your food lasts a lot longer that way.
-Food and means to prepare it.
-Tent/sleeping bags.
-Toilet paper.
-Firewood.
-Appropriate equipment to exercise 2nd amendment rights.
-Adult beverages for end of day relaxation.
-It is still winter, and the desert gets cold in the winter, so be prepared to be very very cold at night, and in the low 70's during the day.
-Please bring flashlights/headlamps/other light sources, and as many spare batteries as you can.
-I would recommend dust masks to keep junk out of your lungs, its really dusty in there.
-Photography equipment of choice.
-Any other items that will make your trip more enjoyable.
-Motorola portable radios. Snordhol and I will have Motorola EM1000R portable radios. They are 39.99 for a pair and charger at Amazon. They technically require a FCC license, but you can use them out there and not worry about getting busted. They also accept AA batteries, just in case.

I myself will be bringing food, sleeping bag and blanket, TP, firewood, light sources, dust masks, and radios. I also recommend bringing extra footwear. After trudging around underground all day, it was nice to change out of my boots and put some sandals on, so I am packing my rainbows.

I want to stress bringing water. You should have a gallon per day per person. We will be exerting ourselves a lot underground, and as a result, water is necessary. I will also be packing some Gatorade as well. I recommend buying 1 gallon bottles of water and freezing them solid. You can use them as block ice in your cooler to keep your food fresh, and as they melt, you can use them to fill water bottles up.

As far as food goes, I scramble up eggs and bacon for breakfast. Lunch is usually sandwiches or burgers, and dinner is burgers, or something else on the ol BBQ. Usually, when it is just Snordhol and myself, we use his charcoal Weber, but I am contemplating bringing my gas grill for this one, since base camp is pretty flat and what not.

Weather wise, it should be about 75 during the day, and 40 at night. Bring a decent sleeping bag, and maybe a blanket as well. I sleep in the back of my truck, and have a blanket to put below my sleeping bag, and an extra. I am a big softie, so I bring a pillow as well. There is no phone reception, so I recommend bringing a GPS with up to date maps. Snordhol might be bringing some maps for the other sites as well.

If anyone is bringing anything else, put it here.

Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't get in a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't pick up the phone, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit don't fucking roll!

It sounds like Therrin is bringing some serious vertical exploring equipment (i.e. professional grade ropes, harnesses and all the other support goodies). We should have enough gear so that anyone serious about vertical exploring should have a chance to try it out.

Awesome. Very, very awesome. Maybe we can step it up over the food from last time . . . .

Woohoo! Really looking forward to meeting up with you all at this one.

I'll be bringing a TON of gear (as long as we can fit it all in Snordhol's vehicle)

For camping equipment I'll probably also bring a coleman white gas lantern, and my MSR international trailstove, but I could also bring a coleman 2 burner if anyone thinks we can use it.
I also have...4 or 5 sleeping bags, in case anyone needs to borrow one? Let me know and I'll bring extras.

Climbing Equipment:
200ft New England BlueWater II 1/2"
100ft (same type)
200ft Double braid 5/8"
Possibly some other 150' lenths of 7/16" static rope also
At least 2 climbing helmets, but I can bring more if needed.
My buckingham saddle, plus 2 extra harnesses
At least 5 descenders (figure 8's, atc, rack, port-a-wrap, etc)
Mechanical ascenders (4 or 5 different styles)
A whole assortment of anchor straps, tubular webbing, slings, footloops, etc.
3 adjustable positioning lanyards
Webbing to make extra harnesses if needed
An assortment of pulleys, rigging block, a 3/4" rigging loopie and spider eye.
An adjustable buckingham wire-core flipline
40 assorted biners (ovals, screw lockers, HMS gates, autolockers, snaphooks, etc)
And probably other stuff too....

After talking to Snordhol on the phone, I realized some of ya'll may be interested in doing some of the vertical descent/ascent stuff, but have no experience or training.

I should have enough gear for at least half a dozen people to do vertical ascent/descent, and we can always pass gear on as each level is attained.

I told Snordhol that I'd be more than happy to do a vertical ascent/descent workshop/training session for anyone who'd like to learn some simple techniques, and get familiar with how the gear works before putting it to use.
(I spent 8 years as a high ropes course/rock climbing instructor w/ high-angle rescue training)

Also, I'm looking at setting up a saftey backup system for manually lowering/raising climbers who need assist for any reason.

Between now and then I'm also working on designing/welding/fabricating a nested set of ladders that can be collapsed and wheeled in, then expanded for short drops, and a few different types of slide-expansion belay anchor bars and rigging points to use on drops so we dont have to rely on 80 year old beams.

That about wraps up my end of it. If anyone thinks they'll need to borrow gear or is interested in learning the vertical stuff, post up on here and make a list of what you might need.

Just for kicks I'll bring an AMT nightvision scope w/ infra-illuminator too =D

If I go I'll take doritos. You ever have a mashed dorito sandwich? it's as tasty as it sounds. Bread, cheese, mayo and mashed doritos. Yum.

Dorrito sandwich = WIN! =D

I'm bringing canned soup, jerky, gorp, stuff like that. That way if I dont feel like messing with heating up my meals I can always eat them plain.

I'm guessing there's really not much water out there, but I always bring my Katadyn water filter with me also.

Finally, verticals. I literally dream about this. I've got my harness, some webbing, a figure 8, about 10 rated, locking carabiners and some static line. No ascenders, though, but this seems to be taken care off. I have yet to even connect rope to harness yet so I'm a total noob.

I'll be there riding with Snordhol, so thursday through... sun night? or whenever he leaves.

I suppose it depends on when everyone else gets there, but if we've got most of the crowd by early friday morning I'd like to do it then. I'd really like to see if we can find some kind of pylon or something, roughly 15 to 20 feet off the ground, to have you guys practice on. "Practicing" for the first time in the shaft isn't the greatest idea.. but I suppose we'll work with whatever we've got.

I'm more than happy to have a couple sessions each day depending on how the groups turn out or who cares to do it; I'm not tryin to get in the way of guys who already know what they're doin.

Even though I did ropes/rock courses for large groups, I've never done a 'shaft group thing before, but I think it'll be alot of fun and should be fairly interesting.

#1 thing we gotta keep in mind is SAFTEY, and making sure you aren't over-doing the limits of your abilities and endurance. Rappelling is easy, but ascending long routes even when NOT in confined dark spaces can be a workout.
There are mental and physical aspects involved. Different people react differently to each of those, since vertical descent isnt the same as just walking through a mine.

I'm sure there is plenty of stuff out there to use for class. Rob would know where something is.

If somebody reminds me I'll see if I can snag a four gas tester from work, that way we can test the air in the mine before entry. Probably not an issue, but it only takes a minute to check, and then it can be worn while inside. It will inform you long before things get deadly.

That would be great. For the War Eagle, standing at the entrance, you can feel the breeze from the other side flowing through. In fact, when walking inside, the dust you kick up blows away. The other mines in that area have much less airflow, especially as you go lower. I really hope you can snag one of those, just for peace of mind.

I know I don't want to drop dead from bad air, and my family even more so.

Thanks for offering up the the gas testers. Even if they don't detect anything dangerous, the peace of mind in having them is well worth it.

I was just going to mention the Oxygen detector, walking out can be hard enough, but jugging back up over 100 ft could just plain kill you. I was just down the Eagle Mine in Gilman last summer and at 17% it was pretty noticable going back up 120 ft. Honeywell makes pocket size single gas detectors, I like mine ok. But a word of advice is to put it in a small backpack while lowering it down the next level, keeps mud out of the sensor. I found that out the hard way. But I would really use one before going down a shaft with no airflow. Also read up on the signs of low Oxygen and their effects. I guess whatever is there, to me, isn't worth going below 15%. But don't use me as an example, I usually have a few brews while down there anyway

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!
Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite.

Anything below 19.5 percent OX levels are considered an oxygen deficient environment, and would require carefull monitoring. and I'm pretty sure it would be alarming loudly. 21 percent OX is considered normal. I actually run into bad gasses more often than low OX levels.

This unit is the size of a Star fleet Tri-corder, and is lowered down and held at random levels to check air on the way down. Once you are down, you can wear it and it will monitor, ox, Carbon Monoxide, SO2, and Methane...

My guess is that for an incline you could wear it and just go slowly, and stop now and again. I always use it on a rope and just send it down, but that only works for verticals. The back pack thing would work as long as it wont disrupt airflow to the device, or god forbid, muffle the sound to much. It's pretty damn loud though.....

The other thing is that guys from Underground Explorers and Mojave Underground have been in all of these mines with air testers and have posted no bad info.

These are "dry" mines, and nothing along the lines of coal. Worst with these is (as mentioned) low O2 and pockets of bad air. War Eagle is going to be a great starter mine.

Therrin <--- L.A. county cert. EMT & O2 provider.

**EDIT**

Just found out that I'll also be bringing a BW XT 4 gas detector. O2, CO, CO2, & Hs2. win =D

Yeah, I don't really see a problem at all but great to have for peace of mine for some folks. There's low oxygen in a lot of mines but you don't really need a meter to tell you when. If you breathing heavier you probably have less O2. Also, Co2 is supper, dupper rare in the area. I can't speak for the tecopa area but the geologist up north, in the mojave, only knows of one where it's a problem. Decaying vegetation is the main cause. And yeah, the "underground explorers" have gone many times way before us. If you haven't seen the website check it out here: http://www.undergroundexplorers.com/

Don't get me wrong. I highly support gas meters but am just saying that in this particular instance it's pretty much a non issue. But at least it will be good to prove everything is a-okay to whomever may address it.

I myself have never used one and am excited to try one out after some chili.

Good to have you Jbuss!

heaven forbid we need any OPA's or NPA's... *shudders*
I'm bringing along med supplies too.

I think at this point, it'd be easier to sort out the stuff I have that I'm NOT taking. It'd prolly be the smaller pile. =P

Rob, I think you're right. But! I'm still looking forward to trying it out somewhere I dont need it, since i *should* have had it for several other mines and didnt. (that doesnt really make sense does it?)
