|  | | | So for you Urban Explorers I've noticed in some pictures there's lights and what not in some of the abandoned places. Random question, how often do you guys find that there's still power service to the places you explore? When ever I watch the movies where people end up in abandoned places wether it be ships, buildings, houses, ect... and they have to find a way to get power and sometimes there's still power service even if the place has been abandoned for years.
Just a random question.

| | | | Yup, Keeping the Electricity on, is the FIRST thing I would want to do for deteriorated buildings with 50 year old wiring; that are 99.9% likely to contain highly flammable/hazardous materials...
Main causes of fire other than you know disgruntled coworkers, arsonists, and 4 year olds who play with matches ... Short List
1. Lightening [Big one, most forest fires in nature are caused by lightening]
2. FAULTY WIRING
3. Heat / The Sun [ever wonder why those hair spray containers say keep under 120 degrees Fahrenheit
So Yeah most places when they are "abandoned have the power shut off"
Also ... why would anyone pay for electricity for a building that is not in use?
The only places I would say electricity may be in is at an active site ... or if somebody didn't do their job right ... and left a light or two on ... then the MAJORITY of abandoned sites should be shut off.
note: don't underestimate four year olds ... i know i was once four ( and grounded for like 6 weeks cuz of it  lol )

But I have seen a few pictures where there is power to lights in buildings that have been abandoned for 5+ Years. Assuming they don't pull the meter.

Exactly.
Sometimes the light plays tricks with the camera because of long exposures, and lights seem to be lit, but aren't.
Obviously if a place has power it's not abandoned.

and i would think live wires would keep the strippers away. but as reoccurring news stories prove, i guess the criminal mind isn't that intelligent.

Exactly, plus some of the taller structures may also power to illuminate their navigation beacons.

Going off the assumption that you are talking about blighted buildings, many buildings are not abandoned in its purest essence.
Buildings and property are owned by people. If a building is standing, chances are it is going to be owned by somebody, or some sort of political entity.
Anyways, I haven't come across any buildings besides active ones with electricity.

this is a very good point. but even in vacated buildings that are really deteriorating, one must wonder why there would be power.
so the question is still "why would an empty building have power?"
most of us are not surprised to know that the building is owned by someone. on the other hand, most of us are generally surprised when the lights come on if you flip a switch. and then take pics of it. hence the original question.
this place for instance, is city school property. out of use since 1997. still has power...
