The Super Collider MDL building still has power and lights on in random offices after over a decade of abandonment. I can only imagine sitting vacant the place is probably using a few thousand dollars a month.

The SSC has never been abandoned.

The tunnels could be called abandoned I guess but the Magnet Lab and other various buildings have been owned by Ellis county and a series of private owners ever since it closed.

The idea of building the Worlds most expensive particle accelerator was however, abandoned.

edit: some parts of it also have power

Thanks for the correction 2x. But would you not call the rest of the campus other then the MDL and LINAC abandoned since the doors have been ripped open and no one seems to care enough to board them up?

Edit: Actually, SSC conversations never end up good. Let's just call it Vacant.

To most UER members abandoned means essentially the same thing as vacant.

When I worked at the Whitby Psych, two of the buildings were boarded up with their power disconnected. Cottages 8 & 23. Both had an exterior light that was still working to assist with security but the lights were rewired to take power from outside. The services themselves were cut and the rest of those two buildings' electrical systems were not active.

Another reason there could be power still on would be the buildings could also be mothballed. The owners are not currently using them but want to keep them in some kind of half decent shape in the hope of reusing the building at a later date.

I've seen it mostly in buildings that are being abated or demoed. Power to the building might be mostly off but contractors sometimes build temporary panelboards for worklights, power tools, whatever, and feed them from wherever the main power feed to the building is. Always makes me nervous when they forget to turn their lights off.

The only abandoneds that I have encountered with power were in Austin. One was the Don Mar Motor Court, whose head is now in the trendy condo guillotine, each individual cabin as that I was able to access the first time had power running, and the hobos that squatted in there took advantage of it with appliances, lights, fans, etcetera. The second time I visited was during the surveying by the recent purchasers, and they had turned off the power.

The other was a Small church with an apartment complex in the back. It had originally been office space with apartments, but had been a church since at least the seventies. This place also had water running. But the downstairs had heavy water damage, peeling paint, etcetera, and most of the apartments, with the exception of the super's apartment in which now lives the amazing graffiti artist who keeps a fresh coat of paint on the place, were inaccessible, but visibly smashed inside and out.

I've been in quite a few disused buildings that still have power on. In some cases, the lights left on and other things such as TVs and radios have been used as a deterrent. People see the lights and hear the TV/Radio and assume, and you can't really blame them for it, that the building is still in use.

Mansfield General Hospital closed in 1992 and it had the works. Lights on in some rooms and corridors, a TV on, sat next to a window and in one hallway, a radio was playing. It can be an arse clenching moment when you walk down a corridor and hear some voices.

Inverkip Power Station was different as it has been mothballed for 20 years so in theory it should have been able ot start up again in a short space of time. Panels were lit up and all sorts.

Tor Na Dee Hospital which has now been demolished sat for, I believe, 8-9 years in a disused state. I visited Summer 2006 and the power was still on with the Morgue fridges still running, x-ray machine ready to use and we had a TV to watch as we stayed the night.

These are just a couple of the places I have been with the power still on. To name a few: St. Joseph's Seminary, Boddingtons Brewery, Lancaster Moor, Fletcher's Paper Mill, Braeval Distillery (even had internet access), Dalkeith High School, Dobshill Hospital, Blackburn Royal Infirmary, Stamford Lodge Animal Testing Lab.

Since I'm too lazy to write a new explanation, I'll just copy & paste from the gallery:

"It's been over a decade since the cement factory of Kalkkipetteri was closed and most machines are now rusted beyond all repair. Still, fresh footprints and tire tracks appear everywhere even though there is no-one around in the silent and eerie halls. Constant buzz of electricity transformers can be heard beyond doors either locked or too rusty to open, and in some places the lights are on but there's no-one home. The sleeping giant is snoring..."

http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=26656

Anyway, even though most of the factory is beyond repair, a small server room, full of obsolete computers and stuff, still has power and the lights and a/c can be turned on. The control room next to it is completely silent, though.

All information and details given in good faith but not guaranteed!

i often been in city or county gov. owned buildings that run the electricity just because they can. it's (taxes) free.

many buildings, that are vacant or abandoned and not in too terrible condition, will run minimal power in order to run fire control. this is especially true in downtown areas that have high building density. it's less expensive for the city to provide power and prevention than to put out several buildings.

and i would think live wires would keep the strippers away. but as reoccurring news stories prove, i guess the criminal mind isn't that intelligent.

I know that some state (Massachusetts) hospitals and college campuses keep the juice on in buildings that are not being used for probably the same reasons you stated. Also, the state facility I work at generates it's own power, so costs becomes a moot issue since it is not being purchased from the electric company.

It's rare to find power still connected and working in abandoned houses, or if the service lead and meter are still there, the main is off and locked. As someone said, demo jobs will leave the power on til last so the abatements guys can do their work, but houses left to rot often lose their power, unless for some strange reason, a property owner is still paying the bill.

Only once have I been in a house abandoned for a few years with slight vandalism, and it had a few working lights. Power was never shut off.
