Anyway, if you're willing to put in a bit of effort, you can DIY one of these babies for less than five bucks, and be a proper urbex ninja:

The number of times I've watched someone's cheap torch die, only to have them pull out a cheap headlamp and find that that doesn't work either is just silly.

And then I'm the one who has to try to get to sleep, wondering if they made it out of the drain okay.

D'awwww, you would actually lose sleep over that? What a softie.

I typically carry no less than 4 or 5 lights with me underground. Primary headlamp, backup headlamp, (occasionally a backup-backup headlamp), primary handheld, backup handheld, UER light.

The UER light was definitely the cheapest, but the next up was a $20 Petzl Tikkina headlamp; which is a fine product at a very affordable price. I've had it for 4 years now. Actually I just ordered a CORE battery for it yesterday =)

I actually used to buy cheap lights. My last batch was from Costco, 2 for $10, and at the time I thought "wow these are brighter than anything else I've got!!" mostly cuz I really didn't have any idea about what bright really was, or about the different kinds of light output. And parasitic drain is a real bitch, as is stripping out cheap threads after the first dozen changeouts.

Have fun with your crappy lights though! I wish you the best!

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

Hey, I don't have to screw someone with aids to know it's not gonna be all that great in the long run. Initial orgasm, the "wow that was fun", then nothing but trouble later on down the road. It's just not worth it.

Seriously, where the hell did that come from?

I'm currently using one of mine at work in the die casting industry--it comes into contact with a lot of heat and oil, and it gets dropped in muck. Other than lots of nicks in the outer shell, it's performing admirably.

got to love how someone who has never even touched one of the lights is continually talking shit about it.

^^ It came from that comment. Point is that fail logic is fail. It suggests that you have to participate in something to talk shit about it.

I'm not the only person who thinks it's a crappy light, who has not purchased it.

He suggests that I have not experienced it, so I shouldn't be denouncing it. I've never cut one of my arms off either, but I can guarantee you I wouldn't like it and it'd be bad for me; but according to the logic used in his statement, I should have no opinion about the result of cutting my arm off, either negative or positive.

I can guarantee you that monoxidechild has not experienced tons of things that he has spoken negative against, which creates a double-standard. This is why the statements logic is fail status.

I can damn well have an opinion about it, I do, and I'm not the only one. If you like the light, fantastic! Let's reconvene in a month or two and see how it's working for you. I don't doubt it's a great light "for some people", but I'd be interested how many, with regular use, are still working in 60 days.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

So you've watched their lights fail, and ditched them?

Listen kiddies, stop trying to see who's the biggest flashlight here (you know what they say about that...) No one said anything other than these are cheap. Not sure I would use one of the three I bought in any professional capacity, but they're more than capable of meeting any needs from the amateurs here.

Size actually has *nothing* to do with this issue(for once). Maglites would win in that case, but they totally blow in comparison.

Have you even READ this whole thread??? Seriously??

I'll agree with the amateur part =) 1 out of 3 isn't bad I guess.

I am not into cheap lights.
I have two petzl headlights, and two surefire lights.
I have backup batteries for all of them, and in the worst case I have 2 light sticks, one ultra bright and the other a long lasting one.

Besides the external flash for my camera with spare batteries, I think this is all I need for any place I can go here.

I bought these:
2 x CREE Q5 LED 270 Lumen Torch
1 x CREE LED Flashlight Headlamp
1 x Derma Skin Face Acne Wrinkle Microneedle Roller 2.5mm

- The lights feel really lightweight and brittle. I dropped one from six feet off the floor, and the finish chipped a bit, but it held together and still works the same.
- The button feels plenty rugged, not sure how well it clicks into off positon. Trickle drain test still pending.
- Flashlight is about a half an inch too short for my fist to hold comfortably.
- One of the lights came with a stripped screw on the clip that has since fallen out and the clip wobbles.

- The headlamp is very comfortable, though the adjustable binding sits right above my ear when the strap is sized to fit.
- The vertical adjust for the lamp takes a lot of force to click in and out of locked position, and (unless I'm wearing a hat) it's much easier to adjust by taking the headlamp off and unlocking it.
- Vertical adjust must be set by clicking into one of three stops in the hinge. (Instead of locking into place at any location with adjustable resistance on the hinge.)

Each one of these things throws at least twice the light of my 2D and 4D Maglights. (Bulb, not LED flashlights, purchased in 2005 for $20 and $35 a piece.) The majority of the spots I explore (and I assume 2/3 of the rest of the people here) are old buildings, and I usually take my light out when I'm going through a dark spot and then put it away for the other 80-or-90% of the trip. These fit in my pocket and are perfect for that task.

I'm glad I paid ~$30 on them.

The end.

(Actually. Not the end. Quoted my old post and forgot I added the acne roller as a joke. I don't have a review for that, but I'm sure it's total kipple.)

I've had the tail cap on a tactical Quark explode from a gas buildup in even higher-end rechargeable batteries. Twice. Didn't effect the light at all, despite the sound like a gunshot when it blew off.

One of said lights has also survived being dropped 60ft onto a pile of brick and torn up concrete and still works after it slid off a ledge I'd balanced it on.

$60 lights, worth it.
$2 lights, probably not, but if you're buying these I doubt you have much interest in higher end lights, so you get what you pay for and probably aren't much reading what the opinionated (overly so, in some cases) flashlight whores are saying anyway.

But we all know how important it is for some people to remind everyone they're making poor decisions and something about elitism, so you may all carry on. I'd just personally never trust this light as more than a backup.

Or maybe to loan to someone I don't like while underground.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.
