You tend to find them where lots of deer are. The deer ticks from Feb-May are the most dangerous. Some areas are so heavily infested that well, you see how it works. Best to avoid these hot spots unless it's really worth it.
You haven't met Mr. Bed Bug yet, have you? Lots of little scary critters to love and cuddle with. lol

This past spring, I woke up with one buried deep in my scrotum.
He had aspirations to be a steel worker until I dug the little fucker out with a pair of tweezers and a sewing needle and applied triple antibiotic ointment everyday for a week. Lyme disease takes around 72 hours to transfer.
Edited to say, for any noobs reading this thread, welcome to UER.

Someone I knew in high-school had a tick in his leg and never knew about it until many weeks later when he woke up to discover his entire lower body, from his stomach to his calves was covered in HUGE awful looking yellow-black bruises. He got tested and was positive for Lyme's, they put him on the meds and two weeks later he was back in school with all but the original bite spot healed up.
The thought that could be your nuts is just too painful to imagine.

Never found the cache.. 
Long story short, Cutter with DEET, definitely works for me. We were wearing shorts and no socks as well. I would like to add that we had no idea it would be that bad, but we drove a long ways to find it, so we had to try.

Both my dad and I have had the bullseye rashes, with mine never developing anything more than a sensitivity to tick bites. I don't think I ever went to the doctor for my supposed lyme's disease, but I can't recall exactly. I might have been put on antibiotics.
My dad, meanwhile, did contract lyme's disease from one of his bites. I think it was in his scalp, that he didn't find out about until too late.
In the mid 90's there was a vaccine being tested, called LIMErix, which he went on. Luckily he never suffered some of the worst side effects of the vaccine, but he still did suffer health problems from the stuff. Like me, he's now hypersensitive to tick bites, and will begin itching all over his body within minutes of getting a tick bite, sometimes breaking out in hives if the tick isn't removed right away. Makes for some interesting moments, spending the majority of his free time on our deer hunting property part of summer and all fall.
And some ticks can be tiny. Yesterday I pulled one out that was the size of a period in a book, and maybe 4 or 5 years ago I pulled a tiny tiny one out of my leg, probably the size of 1/20th of a pinhead. It was so small I couldn't tell what it was, and clipped it out of my leg based on touch alone, and after put it under my microscope to verify what it was a tick, there was a tiny translucent tick nymph stuck into a piece of skin, so small you could just about see my blood cells inside it.
Ticks arent anything to worry about, so long as you take care of them and check yourself over once a day or so.
If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!

Awwwww yeah thats the good stuff.
I went out drinking friday with a friend who tests ticks for lyme for hospitals, thats what he uses. And if you live in Mass and your still waiting for your test results, he promises he will get around to it when the hangover wears off.
