Wearing lightly colored clothes also makes it easier, although that may be counterproductive when it comes to blending in while exploring.

http://en.m.wikipe...wiki/Trombiculidae

Trombiculidae (pronounced /trɒmbɨˈkjuːlɨdiː/) is a family of mites called trombiculid mites (also called berry bugs; harvest mites; red bugs; scrub-itch mites; aoutas; and, in their larval stage, chiggers).[3] The term chigger is often confused with the term jigger , the Chigoe flea. Trombiculidae live in the forests and grasslands and are also found in low, damp areas where vegetation is rank such as woodlands, berry bushes, orchards, along lakes and streams, and even in drier places where vegetation is low such as lawns, golf courses, and parks.

A chigger is what we call them in the south.

CaptainObvious you are wise to worry about ticks as they transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and Lyme disease to humans on a regular basis.

The very small deer tick is the one most likely to transmit Lyme's and is very hard to spot. Strip search at the end of the day, having a buzz cut helps.
If you contract either one, you will get sicker longer and worse than you probably care to.
Sometimes the tick will carry both diseases and both can be hard to diagnose so appropriate treatment sometimes doesn't happen even with timely medical invention. This can lead to less than optimum outcomes.

Personally I rather contend with falling through a floor once, then weeks, months, even years of torment caused by a microscopic parasite or bacteria.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.

Here in Sydney we have the paralysis ticks which can kill an adult Rottweiler by paralysing it within 72 hours.

Nasty little things they are. I have my dog paralysed by one and when you see a 50 kgs dog just falling because its legs can't carry its own weight it is very sad and alarming. The treatment is not cheap either.

We have found that the best way to remove a tick after it has bitten is with the tick twister. It is good because it doesn't put any kind of pressure on the tick's body so they don't get a chance to inject any more toxins in the body.

These are the tick twisters:

Fact.

Seconded

I use 100% deet when i'm out doing fieldwork. I've never gotten cancer from deet before but i have had lime disease... so i choose the deet. As far as getting the bastards off i use a 2ml eppindorf tube with 95% ethanol in it upturned until they detach. Then i take them next door to the lyme disease testing lab to get them tested =) I understand you guys dont have a lab or eppi tubes (probably) but some vodka in a little bottle or something works just fine too. Keeps em sterile till you get em tested too. then you can take a shot to ease your mind.

P.S. lyme sucks

It's not the smokes makin' me sick, It's standing out in the cold to smoke em'

I seriously thought "chigger" was the scientific name.

As for avoiding ticks, I either suck it up and wear long pants in the summer when around brush and touch as little green stuff as possible, or just wait until winter when everything has died off.

Both work pretty well for me since I've never had any ticks, but have gotten my fair share of chiggers and skeeters (screw scientific names, they arent as catchy)

Or as pronounceable. Also, chigger is just fun to say, and a very normal part of southern vernacular.

madcap and I have been at war with the little f-ers all "season" here in northern California. I grew up here playing in the open spaces and never once had a problem with ticks. In fact, I had never even had one on me. This year, the ticks are out of control. Normally we don't have too much of a problem as long as we do regular tick checks and flick them off our pants quickly. But yesterday we were attacked and had to abort our explore. I never thought we could be stopped by something so small. We had no less than 50 on each of us. It was horrible. We did a thorough tick check before getting back in the car, then stripped on the front porch before going directly to the shower. Then we went straight to REI. We picked up a spray for $17 that is for your clothing. Supposedly it repels and kills ticks (among other bugs) when they come in contact. You spray your clothing liberally and let it dry for 2 hours. You are then protected for a certain amount of washes or weeks. (I am at work and do not have the info with me.) So we are going to try it next weekend as our destination is still to be explored. We went to bed pissed at the damn ticks for keeping us from a potentially great explore. We will let you know how the spray works in a couple weeks.

I hate ticks. But on the plus side, spiders don't bother me as much anymore.

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

lmfao! the spray, Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent Clothing spray, supposedly lasts six weeks or six launderings. this is some serious stuff here, massive warnings on it including my favorite: "It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with it's labeling." hehehe.

after retreating to the car I attempted to sit on the tailgate of Alice's SUV to check my shoes & I caught no less than 3 ticks perched on the tippy top of a single blade of brown tall grass, like little ninja assassins just piled on each other there staring at me. it was like crouching tiger hidden parasite out there!

I can't believe you guys have never had any ticks on you before. Growing up in the woods I've grown used to them being all over the place. We walked through a field a couple years ago and each of us had no less than 10 ticks crawling on us in one shot.
If you go through woods and fields, just give yourself a thorough check before getting in the shower. Make sure to check your scalp, too.

I've never had any repellents stop ticks, and i've basically spent half of my summers in a woods infested with them. Best bet is to wear jeans, avoid trails and brushing up against bushes in the 2-5 foot range, and to give yourself a full body check that night to see if any have latched on. They're mostly harmless for the first 24 hours that they're attached.... if longer, the likelihood of getting Lyme's Disease goes up significantly. Also, a tick will drive itself deeper into your skin the longer it's in, and after the first 3 days or so they're damn hard to get out. You'll want to pull the whole tick, and not snap it off at the neck. Best bet is to grab it as low as possible and give it a yank (any home remedies I've ever tried have never really worked). If you do leave pieces behind... I tend to get out a fingernail clippers and just remove the small amount of skin around whatever is left of the tick. No worse than a scratch, and you don't have to worry about getting lyme's disease.

But for mosquitoes, the 100% Deet works wonders. The only time I've ever seen it sold (outside of old bottles of military grade stuff) is at the checkout counters during the summer. Comes in a little pump spray bottle, good for just keeping in a backpack... stuff works wonders.

I went survival camping one time, and got like hundreds of chiggers all over me. I had so many it made me sick. I have never been that miserable in my life.

I got lime disease last year, but I'm generally pretty scared of DEET that I opt for some of the more natural stuff most of the time. On one trip to an ammo plant that had a one hour hike through woods, brush and tall weeds, I was literally picking them off every other minute or so. It was a miserable hike - and not shocking enough, was where I contracted the disease.

Sucked. And sucked my energy too. I knew the symptoms and got it resolved quick.

There is a new type of repellant that is coming out soon - all natural, and it is even safe to digest (although no one should) that is made out of grapefruit extract I believe. It is 100% effective, non greasy and kills the ticks, mosquitoes, et. al. I should find the link.
