Generic Logistics for Noobies

What stuff do you bring? What attire do you explore in? What size group do you go in? What time of day/week do you go? What do you recommend?

I normally wear a normal T-shirt, jeans, combat boots, and a cold-weather BDU jacket. It's normal enough to not arouse suspicion walking around the city, but functional. I carry a multi-tool, a point-and-shoot Nikon, an assisted-open Kershaw pocket knife, and a matte black LED mag light. As for groups, I've only gone with one other person at a time. As for time, most of the places I've been to were really out of the way and had low/no security, so we went in broad daylight.

your loadout sounds just about right for most situations -- and if there's much chance of being caught, the more "normal" you look the better.

however, i often use prop outfits (particularly on infils) -- utility worker, foreman, general contractor, security, and even suit & tie businessman.

and as B&C mentioned, the right loadout will really depend on the scenario.

Could you elaborate a little on the scenario specific stuff? I think that some tips for changing your equipment based on hypothetical situations would help people out a lot (Stuff that isn't common sense or immediately obvious).

sure -- but lets come at it a different way. you come up with the scenarios, and i'll give you my recommendations.

i'm just not familiar enough with you & your exploring to know how to be helpful here.

-I'll preface this by saying that I usually go exploring in a tanktop, jeans, and sneakers, and UE is not generally an OMG secret agent mission for me- . HOWEVER Here are a few examples from my experiences.

When it comes to attire:

If I'm going to be infiltrating a place where I'm required to be extremely stealthy/silent, I will dress in somewhat soft-soled shoes, and clothing that blends into my surroundings and doesn't create noise (arms and legs brushing together, sneakers squeaking on the floor) when I move. I will make sure that there are no keys, jewelry, flashlights etc that jingle when I walk, and nothing that reflects light well.

If it's a place that's in an advanced state of decay, I'll wear gloves for climbing rusty things, and thick soled shoes in case of nails. That said, there are also many times when I can be found exploring barefoot in brightly colored dresses. It really depends on the location.

If you're going to a place that you think or know has security cameras, and you're not going to be able to blend in (i.e. going very late at night), you might want to wear a hat to pull down over your face. (Also, if you're going in a drain or a cave that you think might be full of spiderwebs, hats are nice to keep the spiders out of your hair.)

As for equipment:

Regardless of location, I usually just bring a bright flashlight or two, my camera and my tripod.

When I'm in a dark place with little to no security concerns, I'll bring a backpack with big lights for light painting. If you have a backpack, you should definitely bring water, because that's the thing I miss the most when I'm out adventuring all day.

Most of my exploring is done in groups of three to four (six to ten at meetups), though I've gone alone or in groups as large as 30.

I've gone at literally every time of day and night; later is generally safer as a general rule.

I think some times wearing durable boots helps out if a location has a lot of oil spots, flooded parts, etc. Cargo pants would help to drag all your equipment, but as said above, not very stealthy for infiltration; just depends on what you want to do. Tripod can be used as a mild blunt weapon in nasty situations (I am not liable for your outcomes). I recently started thinking of buying a light toolbelt to carry lenses, lights, etc. Although I think getting a toolbelt that you can close pockets with is worth it more as you may not want to have things dropping out of it.

Attire: trusty red Saucony Hornets - light enough to be sneaky, thick soled enough to take a nail or big piece of glass; jeans; tank top/T-shirt; black leather trenchcoat if I want to feel like a secret agent; hat

Gear: Camera (derp), tripod, my photo-schtuff backpack, headlamp, snacks/water bottle

Day of week: Any day I feel like. Some industrial/commercial locations are best on a Sunday when no one's around.

Group #: I usually fly solo. On a handful of explores I have taken one friend.

Ok, Hypotheticals. There's an abandoned factory 2-3 miles down a railroad track, then a mile back into the woods, with very dense growth. No security, but no street access within 3 miles. Summer time. Ticks, mosquitoes, etc. What would you bring ideally?

Another: There's an abandoned hospital on a semi-active site. Moderate to high security. In the middle of a mid-sized city. The hospital is very large, and has easy road access.

I went for two extremes to sorta see how they'd compare, if that makes sense.

1. Flashlight, bug spray, long pants, hiking boots, water.

2. This hypothetical hospital is easily done in normal clothes and sneakers, but one might want a respirator and bright flashlight for the hypothetical asbestos-filled tunnels. Bottled water for here, too.

Factory: Definitely closed toed shoes (i.e. sturdy sneakers or boots), jeans, possibly a light jacket if the growth is over your head, and a big stick or possibly machete to hack through it, but only bring machete if you're 100% sure you won't be caught...IDK if that would count as a B&E tool. Bug spray, fo sho, and water bottle.

Hospital: Sounds like your average explore here, no special gear necessary, just wear something that doesn't jump out and scream "INFILTRATOR!" (i.e. just regular street clothes). When I am trying to look super casual, I take my messenger bag that I converted to a camera bag with a removable padded insert, so when someone sees me they just think I am your average twentysomething college whatever. My regular camera backpack is a little more obvious, especially with the tripod sticking out of the tripod holster.
