Ok, Hypotheticals. There's an abandoned factory 2-3 miles down a railroad track, then a mile back into the woods, with very dense growth. No security, but no street access within 3 miles. Summer time. Ticks, mosquitoes, etc. What would you bring ideally?

Another: There's an abandoned hospital on a semi-active site. Moderate to high security. In the middle of a mid-sized city. The hospital is very large, and has easy road access.

I went for two extremes to sorta see how they'd compare, if that makes sense.

1. For the factory: Thick as hell leather, steel toe, high top fuck-it-all boots, thick jeans and a tough, preferably denim long sleeve shirt, some work gloves and a beanie. Make sure your ankles and wrists are adequately covered and fuck a machete or finding an easy, push straight through the brush, fuck the bugs. Hike all the way, sticking to the tracks rather than the road. Bring a meal, LOTS of water, smokes, a flashlight, extra batteries for both flashlight and camera, some wasp spray, a roll of duct tape, some paper towels and a small pocket knife and you're golden. Before you go call someone you can trust and tell them EXACTLY where you are and what you're doing, and instruct them to call police and ambulances if you don't call them back by a certain time.

2. For an active site: bring as LITTLE as possible. Show up at 5:00am or so, before the sun rises and usually around when shifts change, wait for the security's shift to change and SWIFTLY get in, then you should have near free run of the place, security rarely goes inside unless they have to. Bring a cell phone, a flashlight, some gloves and a camera. Anything else will look suspicious.

What stuff do you bring? What attire do you explore in? What size group do you go in? What time of day/week do you go? What do you recommend?

I normally wear a normal T-shirt, jeans, combat boots, and a cold-weather BDU jacket. It's normal enough to not arouse suspicion walking around the city, but functional. I carry a multi-tool, a point-and-shoot Nikon, an assisted-open Kershaw pocket knife, and a matte black LED mag light. As for groups, I've only gone with one other person at a time. As for time, most of the places I've been to were really out of the way and had low/no security, so we went in broad daylight.

I have nearly the same, I recently replaced my maglites with surefires. I have Army combat boots, assisted kershaw a coolpix, i also wear jeans and a t-shirt.

I thought it was a cool coincidence

'82 pattern OD battle dress with mosquitoe head net thing, deet, my gerber, a white LED, red filter LED light and IR LED light in a police style tac belt. (just because its easier then sticking shit in your pockets) My canteen filled plus 4 liters spare water in a non framed but waist and chest strapped pack. Depending on the growth, a machete purely as a tool (ditch it after cutting path so no weapons if busted) a NVD (yes I own one, its called a job for you teenagers) so I can exercise tight light discipline inside.
IDEALLY a vehicle capable of driving over the track plant to bring me most of the way.

A pair of scrubs or cargo's and 5.11 shirt (a la EMS) in the colour worn by the active hospital part/made up medical transport company. Pulse oximeter, littmen stethoscope, some nitrite gloves, and either a med textbook or a clipboard.
Walk in like I own the place, if caught, state I'm a med student who though the abandoned part be quieter for study or if as fake med transport, that I've done a double shift and was looking to nap...take my 65 dollar ticket at worst like a man, but likely just be told to leave if caught. (I explore active hospitals like this all the time, never failed thus far)

I carry almost that identical loadout as my EDC. Kershaw Blackout, Gerber multi tool, Mag XL100, jeans, T-shirt, light jacket, Atlas gloves, pen and pocket notebook.

For either of your potential scenarios I would add a fone, water, a spare light, a whistle and an N-95 mask at a minimum. (I prefer my respirator)

Some of the photogs here couldn't so much as go to the bathroom without taking their cameras, but don't be fooled into thinking it's required equipment. The gloves, however, usually are, as is the light. And it never hurts to carry a power bar incase you get hungry. (or incase something collapses and you get traped or pinned and might have to wait out a rescue.... Just sayin.)

Where'd my oh there it is go?...damn.

the only advice or prop you need beyond a camera and a flashlight is common sense.

certain situations will call for different strategies and tools and disguises if thats where it leads you, but just load up on common sense and go wandering.

Creepy.

But anyway, shoes, shoes are important. It's good to know which are your quietest shoes, which ones are terrible for climbing chainlink, which ones will be awful if they get soaked, which are good for running, and which ones will crush puny Earthlings beneath your feet.
