HDR Attempt

I've been working on getting my HDR skills up to par. Any suggestions?
Bracketing was +2 and -2 and used Photomatix to HDR it, stitched together in CS5 (yes this is 2 images stitched as well), then further processed in Photoshop.

It looks like an HDR and smells like an HDR... you did it. Unfortunately, it has a surreal tonal range, it's oversharp and seems crooked to my eye. If I can nitpick, it's also not UE related, and therefore in the wrong place (try 'Other').

Don't even bother posting HDR to UER. Everyone here is such a close-minded twit that you'll never get anything helpful.

Starts to not feel like photography anymore and just visual arts or graphic design. But you're doing fine I guess, although this scene does not appear to need the treatment. The infinity focus might not be the best approach. I thought the arch makes a nice focal point, but it doesn't get its due separation since the aperture is set so small. Looks like a nice place to eat a lunch.

Is that a bad thing though? All the "photography" I see on here has been done 1000 times.

If the result is visually pleasing, then mission accomplished.

I do admit, UE Photography was more interesting six years ago
when "lonely chair" and "long corridor" done properly was
actually a new sight to behold.

It's a tireless argument between photographers and digital artists. Are you trying to create a photograph or a pleasing image? Most on here are die-hard photography purists. Myself, I value something that's interesting to look at.

HDR was developed in order to capture the tonal range perceived by the human eye, because most digital image sensors cannot capture that range. Some photos need that, like when there are large overblown areas and large completely black areas. People in the critiques section get pissy about HDR because 95% of it is used to achieve a surreal effect rather than for the purpose it was intended. Using HDR when it's not "needed" makes a photo worse, not "more creative."

Ooookay, so I got 1 suggestion on my image before this became a discussion whether HDR is good or bad and whether or not it belongs in UE, yadda yadda...

Anyways, thank you Glass for your comment! It's kind of sharp because when I shrunk it, I did a quick Smart Sharpen to bring back some details. And the orange glow which I think is what is giving it the "surreal" look was from the street lamp. Perhaps desaturating it a little would give it a more natural appearance. Thanks dude!

Instead of the smart sharpen tool, I suggest using a proper plugin. Nik Software makes the ones I like.

regardless of HDR and such, it just looks boring and has no mood. HDR seems to take away mood, or add EPIC mood. i mean, it looks like a thomas kincaide (or however you spell his fucking name) painting of a stream. uninteresting, uninvolving, and blah.

but I hate nature pics generally.

I think that you're still a little over the top here. The grass on the sides is too light and it just doesn't need to be emphasized that much. The color is also too much. Look at it this way...the image seems very calm and chill...but the colors are still very vibrant. You need to tone down the color to fit the character of the image.

All that said, you're certainly not far off. It needs some tweaking but it's certainly not horrible at all.

Complete and utter and total bullshit.

http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=80930

..and see virtually every thread that the amazing Wolfheart has posted.

Boohoohoo! The cry of the shitty photographer echoes in the halls of the UER photo forum once again!

The problem isn't HDR, it's shitty photographers who think their shitty photos will be good if they just HDRify them. No matter how much whining everyone does, people who post shitty, poorly composed shots with wild colors and halos and clown vomit are always going to get roasted. Why? Because they shot HDR? No. Because they suck. Because they suck and because they think everyone thinks their stuff sucks because it's HDR, when in fact everyone thinks their stuff sucks because it sucks.

Its really really really really simple. If shitty photographers learn to accept critique for what it is and to use it to make their stuff better they'll become good photographers. If they, instead, decide to ignore everyone and blame the roasting they get for posting bad stuff on the fact that everyone on UER is a 'closed minded twit' then they will remain shitty photographers.

Funny...looking at that link was a lot of exactly what I was talking about. People ripping on HDR just because it's HDR. Try a better argument next time.

LOL, that's funny because it's my thread and what I came away with was that a.) a lot of people really liked the shots and b.) people had some great critique for me.

...and no comment on Wolfhearts threads which pretty much always use HDR and pretty much always get amazing comments...

I'm gonna go ahead and stick with my argument. Next time why don't you try actually responding to what I said.

EDIT: Actually, can you cite ONE post in that thread that rips on the shots for being HDR? I just reread the thread and I don't even see one. LOL.

It would be interesting to see the non-HDR versions to see what was gained by subjecting them to the technique.

Although not necessarily bad comments, both of these imply a level of disdain based purely on the process used, not the actual content.

And yes, Wolfheart does take great HDR photos that get respect. I didn't realize I had to reply to each of your points to justify your simplistic analysis.

I just looked at the water again. (towards the bottom left). WTF is going on? it looks like melted tupperware, not water. I just don't see how this benefits the scene. (not trying to be mean, just critical).

You're kind of a jerk.

And as for the HDR: I've never much liked the soft look of moving water, but that's just me. I personally like it, not bad for an attempt.

Sounds to me like you're the one with your panties in a bunch. One dude is busting my balls, the other would like to see the difference the HDR made...oh nooooo! I can't take it! Get me off the internet!

I see, so when you're obviously completely wrong the other person's analysis is simplistic.

Sounds to me like you're the one who's awfully concerned about what other people think of your photos, boss! ;)

You've got some great stuff on your site but you could be doing even better if you weren't so oversensitive and got (and more importantly listened to) some critique, especially on your HDR stuff. Even if people write the stuff off out of hand because it's HDR, who gives a shit? If you don't agree with them and you claim to not care what everyone thinks of your shit then what's the problem? Plenty of people on this site like HDR when it's done right, that much is obvious if you're not being grossly oversensitive and don't completely suck as a photographer (which you obviously don't).
