You're kind of a jerk.

I find your choice of the phrase 'kind of' extremely offensive.

I think I know what you were trying to do

I used to like HDR a lot. I'm not saying I hate it now, it's still a powerful tool for certain applications, but for your shot, I would not use it. These would be my steps to do this:

Assuming you're able to shoot raw, you'll be able to pull out a lot of the bright/dark details. Photoshop's shadows/highlights provides another level, if cameraRaw wasn't able to do it. Also, add some vibrance, and possibly saturation.
Now, to get the silky water effect, I'd be using Neutral Density filter, drop ISO, crank aperture.

Then again, without looking at the full size image, there isn't much indication whether you used HDR or just played around with photoshop, and the shot still turned out well. The leaves are blurred, but that's expected with any long exposure. The key is just waiting for a moment without wind....

On the other hand, if you were trying to make it an obvious HDR, then you are seriously lacking tonemapping.

Oh, and one more thing, while the rocks look pretty good, the trees look bland. I'd add vibrance/green saturation

Instead of the smart sharpen tool, I suggest using a proper plugin. Nik Software makes the ones I like.

Seconded. Nik Sharpen is fantastic. Use the raw pre-sharpener before making any alterations too for a bit of extra clarity.

As far as photomatix....stay away from the "merge to HDR" button and you will also tend to stay away from those over saturated images that get peoples panties twisted.

It took me a while to learn that less is more when it comes to these and weather people will admit it or not MOST shots you see around here, ESPECIALLY at night are in fact HDR.

Just because it doesnt look like clown vomit doesnt mean your not extending your camera's dynamic range by masking a highlight/lowlight into the image.

Just call it "bracketing" or "blending" and instantly get cred as you stay away from that dirty "H" word

*Sorry. Should have said to use the exposure fusion function of PM. MUCH nicer results.

"i heard someone once say "friends don't let friends do HDR"...."

Lets correct this saying by finishing it. "friends dont let friends do hdr....on drugs"

Which is totally true.

But then again, some people love over/under exposed shit.

I actually really like the photo, and I am normally not a fan of HDR. Of the various HDR images I've seen lately (and in particular, the huge selection of HDR landscapes at a gallery in my area that seems to be showcasing nothing but, with most of it being pretty horrible), I would place your photo in the "well done and tastefully executed" category.

Its not completely over the top, imo, and the tones seem to blend nicely (to my eye). There isn't any obvious telltale color fringing that I can see. While it's not something I would say is my style at all, I will say that I appreciate it for what it is, and in the vein of HDR images, its a lot better than a lot of the HDR landscape stuff I see in a lot of photographic magazines.

My only real nitpicks are the motion blur that's going on with the trees, and I think the bottom left corner looks a little bright/lacking in contrast. I really like the moving water though, and the compositional perspective.

Don't even bother posting HDR to UER. Everyone here is such a close-minded twit that you'll never get anything helpful.

I don't think that is true. If you post a nice HDR image that is subtle but still is a TRUE HDR I don't think anyone would even notice or say HDR. They would ask how you exposed the shot in a single exposure. Which of course you didn't.

What you are referring to, and the thing most don't like, is actually tone mapping. Which when overdone gives the "HDR Look" that many don't like. And in fact is not an HDR.

HDR is a lazy mans bracket and blend. Why not just bracket and blend the shots together manually so you have more control. Its a more respectable skilled way to achieve a greater tonal range. I mean seriously... shooting a bunch of shots throwing them in to a program that just throws them together and playing with sliders? Stupid.
