| | How many people do you explore with? < on 8/27/2010 8:47 PM >
| | | None, a couple, a large group? I'm just starting to really get into urban exploration and I don't know anyone else that's into it around here, so it looks like I'll be exploring alone for a while. Is that safe or I should try to find some other people?

| | | All of the above. It depends on the location. Some require only one or two people, some can easily have up to thirty. Some are sketchy when you go alone, some aren't. Generally i'm in a group of two to five, though.

| | | I prefer to go solo, as I do most of the time, or with one other person - usually because the second person is either a requirement, or because I just really trust them and wouldn't mind having company. I'm not a fan of groups.

Easy access, low priority among authorities, or the right 30 people.

Giant, isolated ones with no security. Most big drains (unless you're entering through a manhole in plain view or something.)

Have you ever run into any problems going solo? I guess I'm just worried about what would happen if one were to run into hobos, or fall halfway through a floor and get stuck in it (pretty funny sight actually).

Very few homeless people cause problems. The ones who do tend to live near rail routes. Generally, indoor places that smell of strong pee indicate someone too drunk to pee outside - avoid those guys. The rest of them won't bother you, and are generally friendly once they know you won't take their stuff. Quarters, cigarettes, and such are helpful.

Nope, not once. I've run into far more problems going with multiple people than I ever have by myself. This has included having to treat fellow injured explorers, groups drawing unnecessary attention and nearly getting us caught, ridiculous drama, etc. Many people view it as stupid going someplace alone, and I've been told the same, but I think its a matter of knowing your capabilities, and knowing what level of caution to use in certain places. Being self sufficient. I think self control also plays into it. I know how I will react to certain situations and am more comfortable with that than having to anticipate how everyone in a group will react, as well. That being said, if I'm going somewhere isolated, I do let someone know where I'm headed, usually a fellow UE buddy, and what kind of progress I'm making - such as when I'll be in and out of cell reception and when I'll check in - especially if I'm going underground or similar. That way if I injure myself or become incapacitated, help would get sent before too long. As far as hobos, I've never had an issue with them, either. They usually just want to mind their own business, and are generally nonviolent. If you're in an abandonment, I'd be more worried about running into more shady types of people (tweakers, cooks, etc), in which case I think I'd be far more able to avoid them and any confrontations while alone anyway. Being by yourself heightens your awareness of your environment and keeps you on your toes. To be honest, another big part of why I often end up solo is because there just aren't a whole lot of people in my area who are into this stuff. I'm definitely not condoning the idea that you go anywhere by yourself though. I would definitely suggest exploring a bunch of different places with some people first before going anywhere alone.

| | | I typically go with 1-2 other people. As a woman, I don't particularly feel comfortable heading into some of the sketchier places alone, and not being the most agile or coordinated person, I think it's a good idea to have someone else with me, in general. There are places where, even though we come as a group, we split off and do our own thing. We all know where the car is so we have a meeting place, and chances are, we're going to bump into each other as we go through (and occasionally startle the crap out of each other when we walk in on someone intently focused on focusing.) But, no matter what, I always have a whistle and my cellphone with me. Just in case.

I can just imagine what a bystander would think seeing a line of 30 people disappear one-by-one into a manhole. Like an underground clown car.
I usually try to go with at least one other person. I think it adds to the experience and you usually come back with at least one stand-out memory from the trip. It's always someone I trust very much (which is not very many people) to have my back, help me if I'm in trouble, etc. I also make sure it's someone who enjoys UE like I do and knows that they do. Me and a friend made the mistake of bringing a couple of our friends who said they'd like to try it and they mostly whined and moaned about how lame it was and how they wanted to go home, ruining the experience. Not a mis-step I'll repeat.

99% of the time it is by myself. As my work allows me to accomodate travel, I find myself exploring during the week while most people are working. I have tried the group thing and most of the time people have bailed out at the last minute. My new motto is, "The only person you can ever depend upon is yourself." This isn't to say group exploring is a total write off, you just have to find reliable people. I have a small crew of two others who are reliable. As you are female, I would strongly encourage you find a safety blanket male explorer to take along with you because you just never know. [last edit 8/28/2010 10:48 AM by Intrinsic - edited 1 times]

One you can trust anyway. You could end up in just as terrible a position with that male explorer if you do not know and trust them. As for myself. 0-2. I take my sister sometimes, and I have a few buddies I go with rarely. I'm usually by myself though.

| | | One or two. I went once with 7 other people, and it was too much in my opinion. Granted the place was huge, i think it was just that it was lot of peoples first time to this location so no one wanted to get separated from the group leader. But as of late, i just go with Chris-Kicker and my fiancé comes along when shes not busy.

| | | Usually just one other person. I've gone by myself a couple times, but it's nice to have someone else around for safety issues. I'm more concerned with falling through floors than getting attacked. We had 14 people on a crane once. That was fun. =D

I've been on an expo where 33 people entered a manhole in the middle of the day then exited from under a pier on a busy beach, so I guess it also depends on whether or not you live in Melbourne (most laid back draining in the world)

| | | Alright, it seems the majority of you go with just one two other people. I'll probably seek someone else out to go with me at first. Another question, how did you find these people to go exploring with? Were they already friends, or did you find each other based on your mutual exploring interest?
