| | | Anyone I trust not to be completely retarded, I'll bring with me if I don't feel like being alone. So, if you have friends that are interested in the hobby and you trust them not to break things/destroy everything or burn the friggin place down/get you busted in the most horrendous manner... drag em along. They may like it and they may not.

| | | Posted by Ligeia Alright, it seems the majority of you go with just one two other people. I'll probably seek someone else out to go with me at first. Another question, how did you find these people to go exploring with? Were they already friends, or did you find each other based on your mutual exploring interest?

I have gotten friends and coworkers to go along with exploring but they're not really explorers. They aren't usually up for a repeat. I took a coworker climbing cell towers, he said he'd do it again, and then he moved away.
Through this website and other like minded individuals ... it's like Penn of Penn & Teller said: "The reason we have such a long term successful professional relationship is because when we're not working together we never associate, we lead very different personal lives."
I don't call other explorers up to go see a movie or to go to the mall (I hate malls anyways). "Yo. Let's go climb/infiltrate ________"
Likewise I don't expect my boss or coworkers to come trudge through swamps, pricker bushes, poison ivy looking for an alternative route into moderately secure places.

| | | I will often invite/include non-explorers, sometimes explaining to them how UE works and sometimes not until they are already experiencing it. However, I then take for granted that most will not return for a second time. As far as group size, I've done everything from 2 to 84 people. Above a certain point, probably around 20-24 in a group, it's nearly impossible to be caught for being in such plain sight and such numbers that (1) the cop/guard is outnumbered and (2) when are there 84 trespassers in one location, and about 20 cars parked in front it will appear more than anything that we are supposed to be there anyway.

Hm, that's an interesting point. Never really thought about having exploring buddies that aren't also general hangout buddies, but it makes sense.

I generally prefer to hang out with my exploring mates, usually more fun and adventurous than my "normal" mates.

| | | i enjoy going exploring with groups of around 6 explorers. it really depends. i do places i just happen to see by myself sometimes. other times ill have 1 or 2 others with me. i think the largest group ive explored with was only around 9 or 10 people.

| | | I don't like to go above 4 personally, I usually go alone or with one other person. I like to take non-explorers exploring if they seem very interested and aren't idiots. many of my closest friends have come with me several times and really enjoyed it. I tend to surround myself with very adventurous people anyway so the idea of climbing into a manhole and exploring a storm drain system or exploring an abandoned or active building tends to be appealing to most of my friends. never taken a co-worker exploring.

| | | Generally two or three other people. If I didn't have to hitch a ride from someone else all the time I'd probably go alone a lot. Edit - the largest group I've been with was five people and that was a bit too big. Granted three of them were very dependent and newbie explorers, but it was more annoying than it would have been to go alone or with less people. [last edit 8/31/2010 1:00 AM by LAX - edited 1 times]

Ditto. Usually I have one Urb-Ex partner, and have gone on a trip with 4 people, but yes; never went alone. IMHO there are entirely too many things that can go wrong or you to undertake an Urb-Ex trip by yourself... unless the location is less than a mile from home base and you know it is relatively safe. The trip we're planning for may actually be our best turnout; we currently have 5, possibly 7. But yes; at least 1 other person to be safe.

Old churches are the best though, for real. Always have a weird tangible silence to them that creeps me right the frack out.

I can just imagine what a bystander would think seeing a line of 30 people disappear one-by-one into a manhole. Like an underground clown car.
I usually try to go with at least one other person. I think it adds to the experience and you usually come back with at least one stand-out memory from the trip. It's always someone I trust very much (which is not very many people) to have my back, help me if I'm in trouble, etc. I also make sure it's someone who enjoys UE like I do and knows that they do. Me and a friend made the mistake of bringing a couple of our friends who said they'd like to try it and they mostly whined and moaned about how lame it was and how they wanted to go home, ruining the experience. Not a mis-step I'll repeat.

I would start taking pictures. Hahaha! That'd sure be a site.

| | | 30 people is a bit too many for my liking.. maybe even break into groups.. i have been exploring for a while, but only recently got on UER.. when i started, i always only went solo, never had any problems.. now, ive gotten into bigger areas, such as factories, and i always want at least one other person, just cuz its such a large area, so its not as creepy, and you dont get bored, and have someone to actually talk to..
