Abandoned Houston Elementary School

A nice small elementary school that looks like it's been closed for a couple years. I've never explored a building that required a flashlight; it was completely dark inside because all the windows were boarded up. It gave me a chance to practice taking long exposures; I'm not as good as I thought I was. Looking forward to finding more buildings like this in Houston.

Great State

Nearly 100°ᶠ inside

Fish tank by the entrance

Someone created a map of the school

The auditorium/cafeteria/gym

PA system

Homeless woman's belongings

Phones used by the teachers

New toothpaste

1 of the 2 points of entry

1 of the 2 main hallways

Tar on the roof was melting from the heat

You should post more pics. A story is always nice too.

EDIT Awesome post man. Schools are one of the types of abandonments I go crazy for. Good post.

Hah! You beat me to the posting. I was testing posting out on these forums before I posted all the pictures I had.

Hopefully this first post is worthy of viewing. I need to practice night/long exposures shots more.

We were more focused on staying alert rather than taking good shots. There was a high chance of encountering someone else inside the building.

I have some more. I explored the outside of the building a few weeks ago; then explored the inside with my brother a couple weeks ago. I don't want to post all the pictures I have from the inside because a lot of them aren't the best pictures I've taken and it's hard to tell what's what. I've gotta get my eyes away from this computer screen. I spend all days staring at one at work.

I'll try to post more tomorrow. Until then, goodnight!

Sweet man you found pilgrim! It looks like there has been a lot going on since we were there. I have some pics of this place too that I will post soon. Me and DownWithTheClown went in here last winter. (Wow has it been that long now?) Did you find the creepy doll in the playground behind the school?

That is where I got my Avatar from! I have a few pics up on my site: www.antiparadigmproductions.com

When we went here it was a lot darker... The only light was in the main hallway right over the fishtank, that was it.
EDIT

Here is some of my pics and Videos...

The lights were shut off and all the windows were boarded up. Any light that you see is coming from the flash on the camera or the flashlight. APPS, it looks like some of the lights were on when you were there, or am I wrong?

And yes, I found The Doll! It was laying on the patio by the little house. Did you find any signs that other people had been inside? I found bare footprints in the dust on the floor in one of the rooms in the auditorium. There was also a pile of dog poop in the same room. Looked like there might have been a homeless person staying there occasionally.

Alright. Here's the rest of the inside shots you guys requested...

Drawers by the entrance

The lobby area was full of corners and doors. Pretty intense first maneuvering through it.

The north hallway.

The good 'ol Humpety

Never even thought about doors closing and locking behind us. It looked like someone might have grabbed the keys and unlocked all the doors. APPS, were all the doors unlocked when you first ventured in there?

Fernando sucks at crafts

One of the bathrooms

Perhaps another urban explorer drew this skull using the front desk sign-in pen

Gives a better idea of how long the school has been abandoned

I'm guessing this is a homeless person arming themselves with an airsoft gun. This was located in the same place the toothpaste and other junk was found

Only one of the bathrooms smelled bad. This is why...

Homemade doorstop

This gives a better idea of how dark it was inside.

Yeah we saw stuff like the footprints and what not, but no dog poop! The lights in the main hallway were on, and like one other room, the one with Fernando's Picture. The wood was covering the window next to the fishtank too. I have an external flash on my camera (DSLR), so it lit up the place pretty nice.

I called the doll Baby Howard, it was creepy. I gave him his own Series of images on my website. Glad you guys got to get in, it is a real cool site.

Did you trip the alarm too? When we left out of the front by the Janitor area there was a Flashing alarm pad... We booked it as quick as possible after seeing that.

Good stuff man, congrats. Loved seeing a site update.

Interesting. There wasn't any sign of electricity being on in the building. So there wasn't any alarm I was aware of either.

My Point-and-Shoot Fujifilm camera only takes long exposures for 8 seconds. How long can you get with your DSLR?

I suppose I should post my pictures from outside the building and...baby Howard pictures!

These buildings were boarded up good. Couldn't get inside.

I'm guessing this was your entry point, APP?

A nice macro on the broken window

Rooftop shots...

Looking down from the rooftop above the little house

First glance at BABY HOWARD

A not-so-fun looking frog

These kids had surround sound in this little area. I found several speakers hidden in bushes.

Were these stickers on the wall of the little house when you were there APP? In your video, it looks like that aren't. Kinda strange...

This house has taken a beating over the year/years

Messy kitchen

Nice decaying door

Street view

This is a great find. looks like you guys explored it thoroughly. I always thought they took most of the shit out of schools when they left them and built new ones but I guess I was wrong

Other than projector screens, books and chairs, there wasn't much left on the inside. I'm surprised they didn't take the fish tank and mini house though.

Yeah I don't remember if those stickers were there or not... The kids from the adjacent apartment complex must have been playing in there or something... (Mini UEers!)

Good to see Baby Howard is still there! I thought it was awesome that he only had one leg...

When we went, there was still a little power at least... With my Canon XSI I can take pictures as long as I need, it has a "bulb" mode, in which as long as I hold the exposure button down, it will keep the shutter open. usually with the ext. flash though, I set it up to sync at 1/200 sec f3.5 at ISO 200. If my flash batteries run out (has happened) I use ISO 1600 and a flashlight or two!

ISO 1600, bleh. My camera gets real grainy at that setting. I looked at Google satellite images of the school and it looked like that area by the house had a jungle gym in the middle of it. Now it's just grass. Was there anything other than grass when you went?

I don't remember a jungle gym when we went. I drive by there all the time, and though it seems like something has changed in the last year, I just can't put my finger on what it is.

Great place to explore though. It's special when you have full access to an entire building.

I dont remember a Jungle Gym. There looked like a spot in some gravel when we went, where there were large chunks of concrete that could have held a Jungle gym down... Don't know why they would take the Jungle gym and leave the PA system, and all of the keys to the school... (BTW did you find that stash of keys in the back part of the office?)

The keys were strewn across a counter in the office.Looks like someone had gone through them. If I remember right, there were 2 different places where it looked like someone had piled the keys and sorted through them. Now I'm eager to go back and take a better look!

Lol. DWC i will post the pencil shot up as soon as I edit your face out of it. That was a good one. I loved how instantly I thought of it as a weapon to fend of the possible violent squatter.

I also liked that when we were inside the school it was so quiet that when we heard something that sounded even remotely like a person, we would duck into the shadows and stand there, the only sound our breathing waiting, and making faces (should we keep going? No. Wait... Now?...Ok Lets go...) at one another before continuing on.
