Deaths?

So my family doesn't believe urban exploration is safe. Which it isn't completely safe, I'll admit. But from what I have found (or rather haven't) there aren't really many deaths while exploring.

I guess just post any news stories or something about exploring deaths, if any. I want to prove to my family that it's safer than they think.

Most of the the deaths or serious injuries i have read about, were from drunk/high/or stupid people, who most of the time aren't even UEers. There are a couple that were freak accidents. But as long as you are careful and don't go out of your comfort level you will be fine. There is a place in town we call the Pighouse it is a huge, 11 story silo. It has stairs and ladders going to all the way up to the roof. I have never been past the first floor. I don't like stairs i can see through. I didn't feel comfortable so I didn't risk it. The other 7 people when up there and back without a problem. Never go alone either. Always have someone you can trust not to mess with stuff or break stuff with you. as for google don't search people who died urban exploring. look up deaths in abandoned buildings or abandonments

Put it this way.....if you drive a car and obey the common sense rules then you would consider yourself pretty safe yeah? (not including being crashed into) same goes for urban ex, if you obey all the common sense rules then it is no more of a calculated risk than driving a car, the only way to 100% guarantee that you won't die doing urban ex is to simply not do it, same as the only way to not die in a car is to not ride in or drive one....just my opinion hope it helps

Can't hide from life. You could be killed walking out of the house in the morning. Probably less likely to be injured/killed/maimed for life doing UE than playing football.

Obviously, read up on safety and don't be dumb and you should be fine. Oh, and don't go tagging or trashing any UE locations or there just might be some injuries/maiming.

Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy. -George Carlin (1937 - 2008)

On a week-long exploring trip the only time I was in danger of serious harm was when a truck nearly rear-ended us while driving too fast in stop-and-go traffic. The worst 'exploring injury' I've ever had wasn't very bad really. Think how often people die in similar hobbies; hiking/climbing/caving/diving.

When it rains, no drains.

http://urbexbarrie...hearn-tragedy.html

Something a little more local, in one of the most famous Toronto abandonments no less.

Seeing as these two are the only ones I can recall and the fact that thousands of explorations take place worldwide each day, the odds of you dying while exploring could be equated to the odds of dying in a plane crash. When it happens, it's tragic, but it's incredibly rare and blown out of proportion when it does happen.

All of the exploring deaths I remember hearing about have been in drains while raining.

I take it people in Texas practice the patented Smith & Wesson approach to greeting trespassers?

Sometimes there is a local dialect such as Winchester. mainly, neighbors watch out for neighbors, and notice strangers.

Thats fair, I'd probably be pretty unhappy if I caught people on my property, although if i had a sweet missile silo on my property i'd invite people in to explore it, or at least 'pretend' to protect it to make it more exciting!

Last year a 12-year-old kid fell through the floor in an abandoned grain silo and died in Turku, Finland. While they were "exploring" just like most kids, I wouldn't count it as UE-related death. They just picked a wrong place to play.

Anyway, from our forum's thread of UE-related deaths I found these:

Trespasser's Fall At Grain Elevator Ends In Death

A man is dead after falling from a shuttered grain elevator in north Minneapolis early Saturday.

In a statement from Minneapolis police, the victim was one of four adults 'prowling' in the warehouse and grain silo complex near the 300 block of Thomas Avenue North, which was marked by 'No Trespassing' signs.

The victim fell through several floors of the abandoned elevator after a concrete beam gave way. The other three escaped unharmed; one of them called 911. By the time police and paramedics had arrived, the victim, who has yet to be identified, was dead.

According to police, the victim and his three companions -- who were cited for trespassing, arrested and released at the scene -- had met only recently. They had driven to Minneapolis to prowl through the old grain elevators and, according to police, did not know the victim well enough to provide a positive identification.

The Medical Examiner's investigation into an official cause of death is underway.

Last January, a 20-year-old University of Minnesota student fell to her death after climbing an abandoned Minneapolis grain elevator with a friend.

And a year ago this month, an 18-year-old Robbinsdale man survived a 70-foot fall into an abandoned grain elevator in the same area as Saturday's fall. Police say grain at the bottom of the silo likely saved that man's life.

I recall someone writing "...this guy deserved it ... he had no business screwing around there at night..." here in UER...

Then there was the Hearn case someone already mentioned.

Teenager found dead in Stockholm shaft

A 13-year-old boy was found dead on Wednesday evening in a 30 metre deep ventilation shaft by Slussen in central Stockholm.

The boy had told his parents that he was heading to Slussen, a key transport junction, but when he had not got in touch and did not answer his mobile phone the police were informed.

"He was later found after a friend showed how it was possible to get into the system of tunnels. When the police patrol came as far as a door where the lock had been busted open they decided to go down into the shaft, where they found the body," Magnus Berntsen at the police told news agency TT.

The Local, 2010-03-04

The guy was labeled as an "UE-hobbyist", but he had mostly photographed graffitis.

my parents were more concerned with getting caught trespassing and getting a police record than me getting hurt. Reasonable thing to worry about, but they can't worry/stop me if all I say is "Going to the city" or "out for the day with friends".

The odds of dying while exploring for some are much higher than others.

It depends on your interests.

I almost died in a freak accident where I banged my head on god knows what three to five stories above a pit full of stagnant water that was impossible to get out of. I was on a catwalk a few feet wide and managed to land on it some how rather than falling off.
However, my mother was once putting air in the tires of the car and by some freak accident hit her head on something and was knocked unconscious, falling backwards and almost being run over by a car who didn't see her.

Could die doing anything I suppose, as long as you use your head (I should NOT have been on the catwalk, as it was the most dangerous/stupid/irresponsible thing I've ever done and I learned my frigging lesson the hard way) you should be okay. Don't climb anything that can't hold your weight, stay out from the middle of rotten roofs, and be extremely careful about infections. Make sure all of your shots are up to date and if you go in a sewer, wear the proper protective clothing.

As for parents, I text my mother the rough coordinates of where I am every time I go exploring so if I die she can find my body.
