|  | | | I have been doing the UE thing for awhile, but I usually don't take pics because I hit locations on the fly without getting a chance to drag back my crappy point and shoot digital camera. What I was wondering is if there are any good cell phone cameras that would get me close to the functionality and quality of a standard point and shoot digital. I have Tmobile if it helps, but I think I can use any unlocked GSM banded phone.

| | | | The biggest factor is the megapixels available. You can get into discussions of the lense and sensor manufacturers, but at such low resolution as camera phones it's really not worth it. Obviously you aren't going to be taking pro quality pics.
That being said, there are some offerings in Tmobile's line-up that have 3-5MP cameras. If you are going purchase solely on this factor I know some of the Samsungs have 5MP cameras. I don't know anything about the phone quality itself so you'll have to judge for yourself.

I remember that Nokia made a camera phone that shot pics horizontally and from the side, similar in style to the old kodak 120 format cameras. It was claimed to have Carl Zeiss optics.

(Also it has a flashlight mode)

I had one for two years; not only was it the worst phone I'd had in a long time, but the camera was a total failure too. That phone should NOT have held the CyberShot name.
LED Flash + 3mm of sensor real-estate giving 5Mp = FAIL.
The Sony K800i I had before it however, was not just one of the best cellphone cameras I've ever used, but one of the best compact cameras full stop.
K800i does the trick when the SLR is broke.
As for Nokias, yes they use CZ optics and the cameras in the N series phones are VERY good. My advice is to look for one with Xenon flash; LEDS have come a long way but they are still far less than optimal!

It seemed like it had a good camera, but the key were so tiny that I would have to use my pinky to hunt and peck through phone numbers. That and Verizon was raping me on their service Quick tip: If you want to get out of your current crappy cell phone plan and into another crappy one, all you have to do is drive around in your cell provider's low coverage area and find a place where you get no service at all. Then, call up your provider and tell them you are moving to said area and give them an address. Typically, moving out of coverage area will be enough to get you out of your contract without the early termination fee. That way, you can jump head first into another bad contract!(Sorry, I didn't mean to highjack my own thread).

anyhoo i took this entire album with my phone ... kinda situation where you were caught going some where on the fly and alas... sans camera  When I uploaded the pictures I was happily surprised ..... never mind how stupid we look ... we had gotten quite drunk

Those were pretty good pics. It seems like the moto phones and nokias have it so far. I think it would be cool if somebody would make an App-based version of the location database. It could be kind of like the Geocache apps floating around. That way, new locations could have pics uploaded to them as they are created on location.

Actually there is one for the iPhone ... called Abandoned. Overpriced and no one uses it though. There is a thread on it somewhere on here ....

If you look up the thread "No more pumping for the city of Orange" i actually shot that with my cell phone camera.

yea! the only thing it seems cranky with its really low light and low light + movement .... but hey for a camera integrated in my phone I really can't complain
