I can't tell you what phone to get, but I can tell you that the T-Mobile G1 has a crapass camera.

That's the one I have.

I have a Nokia Neuron... Awesome smartphone! It has a great touchscreen display that really helps. It takes great low-light pictures and it has a host of options that you can fiddle around with. It also has a decent video capability. Definitely recommend!

Go, go awesome Symbian/S60!!

My wife has the Nokia 5800XM (The bigger brother to the Nuron) and it's epic. Does everything the iPhone does (and many things a lot better) for about a quarter of the price.

Nokia has a few at 5mp with zeiss optics. They aren't cheap, but I've seen some really nice photos and video from them.

Yeah, I recently got the N97 Mini which also has dual-LED flash (probably not as great as Xenon, but better for battery saving?). I get good results from it; obviously it lacks the "feel" (options, menu nav, etc.) of a point-and-shoot, but with some getting used to you could easily make it your UE P&S.

Very happy with it so far, so it has my vote.

And you don't get screwed by AT&T. I'd rather have a voost mobile than go through the AT&T song-and-dance. Again.

Well, I (and my wife) are in the UK, where cellphone companies try to minimize the screwing over they do to their customers (we have six big networks here, so competition is intense).

You US types (and to a lesser extent Canadians) sure do get fucked over for value when it comes to cell contracts!

Anyway, back on topic, I've recently changed to this:

It's the N86 and its camera is very good;

1. 8 Megapixel
2. Carl Zeiss Optics
3. Variable Aperture (very unusual for a cellphone camera)
4. 28mm wide angle lens (almost unheard of for a cellphone camera)
5. Integrated panorama mode (that seems to work fairly well)

Next time I'm out somewhere I'll take a few shots with it and sling 'em up.

I recently got a HTC Hero. The camera is pretty decent, but has no flash. It still takes ok pictures in low light conditions. The camcorder on it sucks, unless the light is right and you stand perfectly still.

HTC Droid Eris:

5MP cam is great for exterior stuff, but it's low light capabilities are total crap. No flash/illuminator. Extremely grainy in lower light levels. I've taken a few fairly nice looking panoramic shots with it.

I have been doing the UE thing for awhile, but I usually don't take pics because I hit locations on the fly without getting a chance to drag back my crappy point and shoot digital camera. What I was wondering is if there are any good cell phone cameras that would get me close to the functionality and quality of a standard point and shoot digital. I have Tmobile if it helps, but I think I can use any unlocked GSM banded phone.

Blackberry phones have astounding cameras. They even have a rather bright LED flash, if you choose to use it. (Well, most of them do)

I love my Google Nexus One for pictures... It has a 5mp camera, but one of the cooler things is the ability to use the blindingly bright LED flash as a flashlight. does pretty good video too..

And it is available to buy unlocked.

My nexus one is like my little exploration tool, great for scouting, mapping, quick snapshots, video, flashlight, and more.

Here is a pic I took at Peter Pan golf in austin tx

A little washed out from looking almost directly into the sun, but nothing that cant be easily fixed...

Cool thing about the camera too is that it has focusing abilities... This feature is hard to find paired with a decent phone.

I know my iPhone 3GS takes amazing pictures in bright light but it's pretty crappy for low-light, making it often useless for UE. I've heard the iPhone 4 has a much improved camera though.

At first I begged for a camera phone, than I received one as a gift... it sucks, takes horrible pics, and the pics I do have on there, I can't transfer to my pc since the service has been disconnected. Now I could careless about camera phones. But I love my tiny Kodak Easyshare.

It really isn't much better matey. Mediocre in good light and utterly terrible in low light I'm afraid!

That looks like a pretty decent camera from the comparisons here:

http://tnkgrl.word...incredible-camera/

I don't know why they hobbled it with a 35mm lens though? Also no variable aperture or Xenon flash. Bit of a shame!

Ok a while ago I promised some sample shots from the N86 and then forgot. Derp!

Here they are now though! None of these are 'high art', but even snapshots should give an idea of the camera's capability.

Wide Angle on a cell is NICE.

The full texture of the doogy's coat has come through in this shot - most cell-cameras would completely fail here.

A shot almost right into the sun - most cell-cameras won't handle this at all. Notice there is still some detail in the shadow areas: I'd say this is good!

Anyway, hope you found these informative!
