Let's say there was a 500' ladder, and a number of people would be climbing it together. I think a lead-climbing type setup would be simpler than lobster-claws...

A rope would be tied to the harnesses of the lead climber, and the rear climber, and then quickdraws would be placed every 15'. The climbers in the middle would just clip into the rope. Then, when they came to a QD they could just unclip it and reclip it below them. The QD's could be gathered by the last man, or left to be picked up on the descent.

Anyone ever tried anything like this? 30 QD's would be a lot, but it wouldn't be too hard to pass them all back up every 100' or so.

This method is best, but requires expensive quickdraws, more than one climber, and a good dynamic rope. But is way faster and a bit safer than the two tether method.

Therrin put me on to these - ladder hooks from an arborist supply place. Main selling points are that they're shaped for hooking on and off rungs, they have a eyelet for tying into that is separate from the bit that opens, and they lock quite cleverly. There's a plate that sits at the base of your thumb that needs to be pushed in for the hook to open, so a normal squeezing action has it open fine, but just bashing something against it will not.

They're big, and these steel ones weigh something like a pound and a half each, but I found them smooth and convenient to use. Deadly slow compared to free climbing, but that's lobster clawing for you, right?

Anyway, +1 for gear designed for a specific purpose. They were only about US$20 each, too.

=D !!!!

Glad to see they worked out for you Meta!!! Yes, they are "slow", but hey, you made it right?

I suppose for descending, you could use a 200' rope, double it over at the top run and rappel down in 100' segments on doubled line. Upon reaching your stopper knots at each 100" segment, you clip to the ladder, untie the stopper from the leg you're pulling up, pull that leg over and back down through a rung where you're at, retie the stopper and begin rappelling again. That'd go alot faster than lobstering back down.

Also, for the "rope-in-place" method previously mentioned on here, instead of using quickdraws you've purchased, you could make your own using 1" tubular webbing tied with water knots. It's considerably cheaper than using sewn runners, and for this application (and most others) it would be perfectly acceptable. Most of us don't have 500' ropes, but several of us have one or two lengths of 200' lines. The first climber could rig the 500' ladder with clipped-in-place ropes, then each climber after that could clip in as you've suggested and pass the quickdraws the same way.

The biggest problem that I see with this: Suppose someone slips and falls while only a few feet from the next quickdraw. That means they're falling almost the maximum distance. If they can't regain a hold on the way down, then their harness biner will slide down the rope, slam into the quickdraw biner, and wrap the rope over the edge of it creating a tight radius bend in the line.

This could be solved using anti-return pulleys attatched to the harness, or ascenders, instead of just clipping onto the line with a biner from your harness.

Glad you had fun Meta!!! Perhaps you could lay your harness out with your cowstail/lobster setup attatched to it and take a pic and post it?

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)
