Now, before anyone starts discussing this, lol, please take 5 mins and go here:

http://www.flickr....72157623094412669/

If you run your cursor over the picture, you will see there are notes for each item explaining their uses. I did use the 3 days probation period on this site before I could post to do research, which helped me come up with some of the stuff in the kit.

I know the firearm will be a topic of conversation, but once again, read the description under it first ;)

Lemme know what you guys think

I read the explanation for the pistol, and I still don't see why, despite it being legal. What are you expecting to encounter that would need to be shot at? And what if you were caught, might having a gun raise some questions that are otherwise unnecessary?

A lot of the places I go to, or am planning on going to in NC are in extremely rural/forested areas of the state.

1, I'd like to have it in case I came across an animal that I don't feel I can run away from. Maybe not necessarily to shoot it, but definitely to scare it off at least.

2, You never know what kind of people you will run into either. I dont' want to start a big gun/anti gun debate/discussion, but I'm not out to try and shoot anyone, but I like to know I have the means to defend myself if something were to occur, no matter how unlikely. I've been put in a situation before where I had to defend myself, or I would have been killed, and luckily I had my pistol. I didn't have to shoot anyone, but I do accredit it with saving my life that night.

3, A gun is very loud, and internationally, 3 of anything means distress. Three loud whistles, 3 loud noises, even when you are hiking, if you see 3 clumps of rocks or anything that is obviously man made, you know it's dangerous. 3 gun shots can attract a lot of attention if needed when you are in a remote/desolate area.

But like I mentioned in the notes, it will rarely be carried with me. I dont' carry it on city exploration at all. And if I get into an area that is technically trespassing, it definitely isn't on me. If It's on me and I get questioned, then I will be within my full rights of having it on me and won't have a thing to worry about.

haha, it does when you forget to charge your camera the night before and you are a long ways from home.

I just have a habit of keeping my camera close to things like that. I've found myself wishing i had my charger on more than one occasion. Also... i'd probably lose it if I didn't keep it in the camera bag eventually.

I believe you're going to get a lot of flak here for the pistol, but I can see where you are coming from. I was recently hiking to this remote lighthouse and a giant bull moose popped out of the woods and started walking down the trail towards me with complete disregard for my presence.

Now I'm not saying I could take a bull moose down with a pistol, but it would have been a bit comforting if I would have decided to see what the moose wanted instead of getting the fuck out of the woods.

I am prepared for the Flak. I was surprised to find, though, that most of the people I have gone on UE trips with were happy that I had it. I thought I would have been shunned by them for it.

You are very lucky with the Bull Moose. Those things are incredibly dangerous. If it were a Mom, and there was a young one around, things could have been very different for you my friend lol.

In NC I worry mostly about Mtn Lions (or cougars for you Canadians ;) ), Black Bear, Coyotes (Actually pretty cunning and aggressive animals), and wild/rabid dogs.

I've been exploring hard core for well over 3 years. I'm also a 15-yr veteran when it comes to wilderness survival. Never in those years have I had a need to carry. Frankly (my opinion) it's not wise to carry any type of gun, permit or not, while exploring.

If the property owner catches you, searches your bag (right to do so on their property) and finds your gun, not only can they press trespassing charges, but also additional charges for a concealed weapon regardless of a permit or not.

Just some friendly advice & professional wisdom.

FYI: I own several knives and an airsoft gun. I'm not against owning them or using them, but I never wear the gun or carry it while exploring. Not even when I go on a wilderness expedition. Absolutely no reason to carry while exploring.

... my two cents.

I can see where your coming from with the gun, i carry a gun when im out exploring sometime's, i probably wouldn't consider it part of my UE kit, more so as a hiking kit for when im in the middle of nowhere out in the bush and find something interesting to explore, that's usually my hunting rifle(for saftey/hunting if in season) . You might want to consider a head lamp as it's hands free, and good to have a spare flashlight

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained we must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature.

Of course, in the city is where you'd really need it. I've been in the bush plenty of times and never seen anything I'd need a gun to defend myself against. In the city, different story.

I find LEDs to be reliable enough that my backup light is 'emergency lighting.' But my LEDs last for stupid-long times on 'dead' batteries, so I won't be in the dark before I have other problems. It looks like a solid kit, though I always bring water and snack bars if I have a pack on me.

I almost always carry a disposable face mask or respirator, a handkerchief, and some gloves, a multi-tool and sometimes a pry bar.

We spend a lot of time climbing around in areas that may or may not have asbestos- definitely have lots of dust and who knows what. The gloves protect from random sharp things or dangerous contaminants and the respirator has saved us from black lung as many urban places are quite dusty!

I always bring a hanky as rag for sweat- emergency face mask, or a sling for hurt limbs. Also great for wounds- a large hanky is so much better than a bit of gauze.

Suprisingly I have found several instances in where I needed a screwdriver or something while exploring.. we also have a short 8 inch long pry bar that has come in handy often! (and I'm not talking about breaking and entering people- often things have just fallen down in hallways, etc, and you need to unscrew and pry your way through!)

I plan on purchasing a respirator shortly, so I'm not wasting money on disposables quite yet, and I'm limiting myself on where i go until then.

Bandana's are good for lots of things, but be careful using a dirty one (sweat/dirt/etc) as a bandage. You want to keep wounds as clean and sterile as possible so as not to increase risk of infection. I have the emergency compression strap in case i need to sling something or immobilize a body part.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm
17 rds in the Mag + 1 in the chamber = 18 round capacity.

I can hit a 16oz water bottle from 100 yards away with it consistently. It's stupid accurate.
