A few questions: Asbestos, Maps, GPS, Bathrooms and Knives

Okay - a few questions!

Q1. How many of you like, actually bring a mask, and use it, most of the places you go? How many just use it if you see asbestos signs? If you do use one, do you really get new cartridges after eight hours of use?

Q2. How many of you use a handheld GPS unit to map things as you go, and find things going back?

Q3. Okay, this one's for the girls.....would you pee in a broken toilet if you had to (no place to really go).....if the toilet was "clean"....I realize there aren't many girls here. Kind of an odd question but I feel that I violated some sacred UER rule. But I totally had to go!!!! I was gonna go outside but as soon as I was about to, people came down (from my group) so I hiked up my pants and they said there was a bathroom upstairs....hmmm. I had to. Am I evil? LOL!!! (just number one!)....

Oh, another question - in California, does SF have an ordinance on how long a blade has to be in order for it to be considered "concealed". I have a seatbelt cutter that I carry with, but the blade is 3". However, the whole part that folds out is slightly larger, but part of it is not the blade. Does anyone have info on that subject? I know California has it's own rule of 3" or less. But cities can make their own rules harsher than that.

Anyway, just tired after a trip and I had those questions in my head.

MASKS are good to have, of corse i have one but never use it cuz its uncomfortable and awkward. altho yesterday i was 4 hours in an abandoned sanatarium, that was super moldy/dusty and today my lungs feel like shit!
GPS, who needs them? this day and age people depend too much on their electronic gadgets to find their way around. what ever happened to just being observant? buildings or properties are not big enough to need GPS to find your way around. if you wern't looking down at the GPS screen/map, and looking around "the location" like you should be, (isn't that the whole point of entering?) then chances are you won't get lost! plus its one less thing to carry, lose or worry about breaking!
As for toilets, no your not evil, we all do it, if you feel comfortable using one, then use it. i've #2ed on one before (hey... its better then leaving a steamy pile on the floor!), my girlfriend has used them too... when nature's calling... don't be stalling!
your last question... sorry, i dont know, im canadian.

oh ya, "asbestos" is best left alone! do not disturb it, stay away from it if you can! when asbestos is dry it can become air-bourne... not good, when it is wet it most likely will not become air-bourne... BUT if you touch it, it will stick to you or your shoes/cloths and then eventually when it dries it will become air-bourne... not good! some masks are rated for asbestos. If your in an area where you need an asbestos rated mask, chances are the asbestos fibres are in the air- which means their also going to be in your clothing or hair etc. when you take off your mask you will still inhale the fibres from your clothing or hair... NOT GOOD!

Mask/respirator, yes. GPS, no. I should have worn my respirator the last time that I was in a particular location. My body felt a little strange after about an hour or so there. High levels of mold were probably responsible.

the knife is considered "concealed" if you can't see it, however personally I can't see a cop giving a girl too much shit for having a knife on them as long as it isn't like a fixed blade combat knife or nothing really odd looking.. if it's just a lil pocket knife then I doubt anyone would care 'too' much..
As far as state law goes I think your fine and you shouldn't have a problem, local law can be a lil strange, it's best to look up local ordinances of the places you are around alot, just so you know... from what I see you can carry a folder concealed or open carry legally, and a fixed blade has to be carried openly, double edged knives I would say are illegal as well as automatics and balisong (butterfly knives)
But heres the Ca weapons laws that should have anything to do with a knife:
http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/ca.txt

In the end though most knife laws are written so damn grey it really doesn't matter what they say.. everything will depend on the cop and how you handle the situation, god knows I have had several cops attempt to "confiscate" one of my knives saying it's illegal, for me it has always ended in a verbal argument where they back down eventually, mostly because they honestly don't know the laws and I haven't been caught doing anything stupid yet (so far just random stops or speeding and the such).. although I don't recommend that unless you really have nothing to lose and have nowhere to be

LOL I just stood over it. So not too bad....

Yeah the GPS I think would come in handy for really large sites where all the buildings look the same, (military style)....but of course not for just navigating a building Or to collaborate with others on making maps of large areas. That way, there would be much less "it's the building that is on the left after this and that"....and just coordinates.

But yeah, if the batteries died or it screwed up, that would suck. I guess you'd just be at square one again LOL, which isn't too bad.

also, you can find out info on a property online. most states have websites that let you do the following.

1 owners name
2 when the property was bought
3 an mortgages on it
4 type of property ( residental or commercial )
5 tax info

these sites are easy to find on google.

that is why most home owners get so much junk mail.

Basically, everywhere I go has asbestos.

This is my "asbestos" protocol....which I realize is probably pretty pointless...

I use the mask, I write down the hours on it, replace when I reach 8. I take all my clothes off when I get home and put them in plastic bags, then I also bag my shoes. The clothes and shoes get washed separately. My backpack unforunately can't really be bagged....I guess I could put it in a garbage bag? My mask gets washed and the cartridges get stored in a separate bag (zip lock).

After I take off my clothes I go take a shower immediately before going home.

Are there any tips or tricks to reduce exposure? I thought I was good with the mask, but I realize like you said, clothes and hair and everything that was in a building is carrying the asbestos.

WOW sandaili, you go to the extreme! and no its not pointless, i work in the plumbing industry and deal with asbestos from time to time.
one thing i can advise you, since you go to such great lengths to protect yourself, wet your clothing before you take it off! (with a garden hose, outside of corse!).
another thing you could do is check out a local safety store, they have those disposable white suits w/ hoods, they probably dont cost much. if you do use a disposable suit, you should still wash your clothing after.
*either route you take, the last thing you should take off is your mask!
*before you remove your mask's cartridges from the mask, plug up the holes the filtered air (the holes that are inside the mask) comes out of- with sticky tape or cotton balls. if you store them in a zip loc, "uncovered or unplugged" the asbestos fibres that "have" been filtered can make their way into the wrong side of the cartridge, waiting for you to take a big cancerous toke of asbestos next time you use it!
***DISCLAIMER... i just want to make one thing clear: altho i have removed asbestos insulation from pipes under the watchful eye of professional "asbestos removal contractors", i have NO professional asbestos removal training! what i have told you here is probable not considered "safe practices" and should be taken with a grain of salt.

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Maybe you could contact the professionals for us and see the proper way to do it. I would make an excuse such as "A photography student, who's a friend of mine would need to blah blah blah". Something to that extent. I'm not much of a planner, which means I BS on demand, not beforehand (although it is risky).

I make love the same way I resolve arguments. With my fists.

Well, after reading up some....

Washing clothes contaminated with asbestos usually don't get all of it out. I didn't realize that. So, I pretty much have to wear a suit? *icky*

I better start finding sites that don't have asbestos in them. Seriously.

Most edged weapons laws refer to the length of the blade itself, not the overall length of the knife, but keep in mind that some facilities have rules against all knives/cutting instruments. Used to be you could carry a knife with you on commercial flights if the blade was 3" or less, but...

As for GPS, they are handy, valid tools for some UE stuff. For example, my particular UE focus is military sites. Some, for example the former Fort Ord, and various Nike missile sites are being demolished. Others, such as some of the gun emplacements at Fort Funston in San Francisco, can be obscured for years by sand & vegetation. If I see something important to me, I record the GPS coordinates.

That way, I can find the exact site easier on Google Earth, and if I come back to the area a week, a month, a year later & cannot relocate the object, I can get to the exact spot, and try to determine if it has been removed, or covered over.

Most importantly, my exact coordinates are written down for posterity, so 20, 50 or even 100 years from now, historians & archaeologists interested in 19th & 20th century military history might come across my notes complete with GPS coords & be able to locate the exact site of long-gone profound & minor military structures.

There are plenty of girls on here!!! Most of the girls here totally kick ass. Peeing in an abandonment is not big deal, seriously. No "UER rules" broken, I assure you. If there is a toilet, use the same precaution you would in a rest stop or bar/restaurant.....squat! Much easier than going outside and you at least get a little privacy. I suggest bringing along a small package of tissues just for that purpose. (And number two is perfectly acceptable as well. When you gotta go....ya gotta go!)

I think you are a little too worried about the asbestos as well. I would be more concerned with mold and pigeon poop than I would be asbestos. The amount that you are being exposed to is only relevant to how much you disturb it. Like I said, the mold and bird dropping pose more of a threat and those would be eliminated in all of the precautions and clean-up you mentioned. I would advise easing up on all the worry a bit and just enjoy yourself.

Too late.............. I got bent outa shape.

I bring a mask, only used it maybe 5 times in the last year - and Id say im a semi-active splorer.

No hand held GPS, GPS for the vehicle and a handheld compass.

A knife construed as a concealed weapon would have to have over a six inch blade and be out of plain sight.

And if you gotta pee, you gotta pee. Hell I've even been exploring and a female in our crew had to take "Do number 2" eh whatever.

I'd say the GPS is a great tool for finding stuff, and being able to find it again. I've spent a couple days exploring a local mine, and the GPS was a great tool for coming back the next day and re-finding portals that we had discovered on previous expeditions. Needless to say, the thing wasn't much good underground, though I s'pose in an emergency situation the backlight could be used if the flashlights all died...
