Anyone else ever have to run/escape from the clutches of the man. I've only been caught once, police were called and I ninja'd my way out. Any tips on this.

You see the way it generally works around here is that you offer something to us and we might offer something back to you.

I'm feeling generous though so here is the greatest tip on this topic.

Become a cop.

Or if you have to break the law, don't break it in front of everybody. Try to stay covered as much as possible so that being caught by police wouldn't be a problem. The best way to go away from police is to avoid ever making contact.

Be careful with a scanner. It can give a false sense of security. Also, it is a serious offence to use a scanner to avoid Law Enforcement.

Keep in mind also that if the po-po sees you & you attempt to escape & evade, if/when you get caught, you're going to have lots of charges. The Man reporting over the radio that he sees someone in an abandoned building isn't a huge deal.

The Man reporting that he's in foot-pursuit of a suspect IS a big deal, and while the chase is on, it doesn't really matter to the po-po whether the bad guy is a bank robber or just some dude who was poking around an abandoned, trashed building (this is for a foot pursuit, vehicle pursuits are different). Lots of other officers are going to want to join in (prey drive), they might get a K-9 on the way, and even air support. If one of them slips on a banana peel while chasing you & gets hurt, it is legally your fault, & the charges start piling up.

If the po-po sees you & you approach in a non-threatening way to make contact with them & explain that you're a photographer looking to take artsy shots of the structure, there's a very good chance that you'll end up having a rather pleasant conversation with the officer, & or "please don't let me catch you in here again" because you didn't try to make him or her break a sweat & have to call out the cavalry to try to catch you.

They're so used to dealing with shitheads, that if you act like one, they'll treat you like one, whereas if you take the initiative to cooperate with them & handle yourself in a friendly & calm manner, they'll want to help you, even if the circumstances are such that they have to issue you a citation, they'll let the prosecutor's office & judge know that you didn't try to run away & that you were actually rather pleasant to deal with.

I'm not saying that back in the day, I've never ran from The Man, but I've always tried to put a little thought into the situation & not just tried to run away on sheer impulse.

Hand held scanners are worth there weight in gold. Just be careful and know the law regarding them in your state. If you do end up getting caught with one in a state where they are illegal you'll be in a lot more trouble than normal. It also helps to know the police codes but you can find those anywhere.

It is a federal law (I believe class 2 misdemeanor?) for using a scanner in the commission of any crime. So, be careful, as I said.

I once had what must've been an entire station of cops looking for me. Me and some friends were lighting of fireworks in an old abandoned lot once, next to some railroad tracks. The only way in was down the tracks, and through a hole in the fence. Anyway, when we had finished with the fireworks and were climbing through the hole, we were confronted by a single police officer on foot. He told us to stop but being a normal 16 year old kid, I decided to run. I ran down the tracks to a random street and hid in a bunch of thick bushes. I laid down and wrapped myself around the bushes so I'd be as small as possible, I also covered up my watch, any light colors, and zippers that would reflect any light.

Anyway, all of a sudden there's 3 cop cars and about 15 cops running up and down the street. Another cop car pulls up on the street across from the tracks. About 8 cops come running about 5 feet from the bushes, the look into them quickly with their flashlights, but somehow nobody sees me. A cop cars shining it searchlight comes up the street, and I'm sure I'm caught.. It drives past, beams me, but keeps on going. I'm starting to think I'm in the clear when it makes a return pass... and suddenly I hear, "THERE HE IS! UNDER THE BUSHES! GET HIM!!"

I'm totally swarmed by the cops, weapons drawn. They tell me to roll out with my hands where they can see them, and lay on my stomach. I do so, am promptly searched, cuffed and thrown into the back of the police car where I'm driven back to my friends sitting in a parking lot with the rest of the cops.

Apparently some douchebag called the police saying he heard gunshots, and when the first cop arrived and was walking in, he also heard the fireworks (firecrackers and only) and called in a shots fired, which of course, brought the entire platoon. Anyway, after a lot of degrading and lecturing, we were set free with a warning and told to stay out of their town (it was a town nearby, not my home town). I consider myself lucky I wasn't shot.

I would be interested to see the language from the criminal code that addresses that. I have never been able to find it in Canadian context (although it is listed frequently in U.S. legislation).

Every neighbourhood has at least one numpty who will call in shots fired everytime a car backfires or someone lets off a firecracker. It gets the police all excited and everyone generally over-reacts over stupid shit. I'm glad you didn't get your head blown off. ;)

In Indiana it automatically bumps up any crime to the next level. So if its a class A misdemeanor and you use a scanner, it becomes a class D felony. I don't know about the state rules here in NC though. So not only is it a federal crime but the state law can be even harsher. So don't get caught with it when trespassing.

Scanners are great but I don't think they are worth the risk to have while UEing. Fun to listen to at home when you've got nothing better to do!
