| | | Ok long story but here i go. i found some thing out about a month ago, i was walking home at 3:00 am, i had my backpack on and in it i had my home made grappling hook, with 75 feet of rope, camera full if pic's from a construction site i just came from, my lock picks, my multi tool and my ninja hood(well its not a ninja hood, just a black balaclava, it was cold out) anyhow not good stuff to be found with. so i walking down the street and seen some guys walking around with flash lights, but i did not think any thing of it, tell i got about 7 houses down and than i snapped back to reality ZOMG COPS. well at this point i thought i was owned but i could not do any thing about it, they have relay long blocks here AND i had my dang headlamp turned on(sigh) so i just keeped on walking. the cops where gong house to house looking for some body, and i was the only person in the hole dang neighborhood walking around.(well besides who ever they where looking for) Game face on, small grin Check, slight inquisitive look on face but still minding my own business Check, slight wave prepared Check, OK so what happens? i walk by gave the cop a little wave, he waves back, and i keep walking...ZOMG! purity much what a came up with is that a cops sees things going away from them or avoiding them as a shure sign of guilt. but an open approach, even if out of place(i need to try this as a ninja)they see it as a sign of innocence. and it makes sense, purity much what has all ready been posted, but i think that this should be one more thing to add to your methods of avoidance.

That's all well and good until they start asking questions. Once they get that far they can screw you / believe entirely effed up things / punish you for these things. But by and large walking by innocently is a much better tactic than running.

| | | If you run into police or security or whatever, I'd say best bet is to just be kind and respectful, also don't carry anything on you that they can use against you. Whoever said carrying a camera helps, it probably does (haven't been caught yet, but I'm sure it'd look better than just some random guy walking around) If all that fails and it looks like your probably screwed, just remember affirmative defense? I'd say respect is probably your best ally in a situation where your caught. Running only makes you look more suspicious, then if you get caught, your gonna have to deal with someone who's pissed off that they had to chase you around for however long. My $0.02

| | | Also remember that most security guards don't have power of arrest. They have to call the cops, and there is no law for "eluding Securitas." So like jeffmc said, learn when and when not to run.

Anyone can 'do' that and it's illegal, and often counter-charges against the 'well-meaning' citizen can be brought up in court. Don't worry about private security putting their hands on you; they can't. Best options with cops are normally in this order. Hide. Run. Play nice.

That is correct in most states in the US. The use lethal force may also being justifiable to stop a person who has committed a serious felony such murder, armed robbery, rape or kidnapping. More than once PHL store owners have gunned down vicious armed robbers attempting to flee and faced no charges, or civil suits for that matter.

To use "Ninja'd" would mean you weren't caught in the first place. As for the citizens arrest, it's surprising but I've seen them performed on several occasions on, of all people, shoplifters. Excessive force may have been used, the proper script was not said, and it was no where near a felony, but no one cared (cops/lawyers/judge). They find so many ways to dig a grave for you if you're caught, maybe the best bet is to "Ninja" your way out and tell any officer that you are a 'photographer looking to broaden his horizons' and add in plenty of surprised apologies; and always address them with something along the lines of 'officer' and not so much 'cop', 'pig', 'popo', 'bull', etc. Plus, keep in mind some officer's are bored and looking for some action when they catch you.

| | | The best way to not "get caught" is to act like you own the place. If a random person walking by sees you and you look like you're where you're supposed to be, chances are they won't think anything of it. Chances of a cop seeing you in the (hopefully very short) amount of time you are visible is also very unlikely, unless its high security or patrolled regularly. Be confident, but cautious. Being inconspicuous is key too. If no-one sees you, then a cop sure won't. Some circumstances probably call for more caution and technique, but from what i know, these are the best tips.

First thing, why are you running from the police. Makes you looks worse. It's easier to be mature, stop and explain yourself than it is to try to evade and risk the chance of getting caught and getting it a lot worse than a trespass fine.

| | | I agree that stopping and talking to the police is the best way to go. Depending on the officer, they may be more interested in the hobby or hearing your stories than hauling you away. But, at the same time I see nothing wrong with trying to avoid them if you see them first or if they are in the area, but if they yell "Stop!" then do so; and when I say avoid I don't mean run but casually walk as if you belong there. Another thing that running from the cops might get you is a shot from a taser, which really isn't worth it.

Unless you are caught on a Harley with accelerant and a flamethrower they pretty much will leave you alone. It also helps to have a very distinctive last name and a notorious crack dealer for a brother. The po pos are always relieved that it's me not my brother. But seriously, the Dow, one of Mtl's famous whores is right by a cop shop. They don't care.
