Yup, sure was.

Well, we kind of extended the definition of "within walking distance", but it would be completely fair to say that it started out within *easy* walking distance...

It took mine (this time) about a week. When I was a kid, I remember it was instant. I would start itching within hours of touching the stuff. It also made my eye swell really bad when I was a kid.. but only the left eye for some reason. *shrug*
Yes you should.. it was a lot of fun. So... which part of our recent gathering enticed you the most? The walking all over Fort Worth, the atomic pizza that causes explosive diarrhea or the poison ivy?
Hope to see you at the next meet!
*smile*

all of it sounds awesome to me! hahaha i'll for sure be at the next meet though!

| | | Yeah the explosive part wasn't the fun part of my day. However, I did have a blast walking around all afternoon and bullshitting. I'd say next time we get a "target" location

I thought you'd never ask! I don't think it will work for it to be monthly. The turnout for the second meeting in two months was highly motivated, but small. And especially for the next few months... I know I'll be in Austin the first Saturday of June, and first Saturday of July is July 5 (we'll all be in the hospital for post-fireworks burn treatments). So August looks good. And as for the location... well, two of the more active members of the forum are also some of the most distant. I really like the idea of meeting in Tyler -- home of Raticus, and close enough for our friends in Shreveport to visit without taking out a loan for gas. And if mid-August would be good, that might help. A little birdie told me that the first Saturday of August isn't good for some folks, so how about the second Saturday? Any later than that, and we'll get too close to the start of school. Is DFW up for a road trip?

| | | Ok, August does seem a long ways away, but I don't have any weekends free myself until then! But I'm still more than happy to help put it together. There's a suggestion in another thread that it would be cool to meet up in Waxahachie, home of a certain unbuilt underground relic of the Reagan administration. The chances of a spur-of-the-moment exploration of said relic would be extremely slim, but Waxahachie is like a UE paradise, except that the buildings aren't all abandoned. Many are restored, and just walking around the downtown square is like going back in time. And you've really missed out if you haven't seen the courthouse, with the carvings of the stonecrafter's girlfriend's beautiful face -- turning into hideous monsters after she married someone else (or something like that). A great place to meet would be the historic Rogers Hotel. It was closed and abandoned from 1964 until the 1990s, when it was carefully restored and reopened. The lobby has a comfy sitting spot, but there's a mezzanine level that is way cool. It's like halfway between floors, with a view over the lobby. Low ceiling, so A.Geoduck would probably have to, um, duck. There are a couple of restaurants in the hotel, but I wouldn't plan on eating from it -- prices are in the $7 sandwich range for one, $20 New York Strip in the other. June 7 (first Saturday) is just far enough out that I can set up the event and everyone will get a notification if they're close enough. Should I go for it? $4 gas is getting real, so I'm a little worried about scheduling Waxahachie and Tyler in the same summer. And I know I can't make it... and me and my daughter made up 50% of the last get-together.

| | | I think thats a great idea. But with gas at $4 a gallon a bunch of us could meet up then carpool and split the price of gas or all pitch in. + if we car pool those of us who depend on public transport will get the chance to go too.

| | | Ok, I've gotten some PMs (ok, one PM, but isn't "one" part of "some"?), and I'm thinking that June 14 (second Saturday) would be good for Waxahachie. I've got a fair chance of making it after my middle daughter's horse playday near Lake Tawakoni, but I can't promise. Should it be early or late, I wonder? The early time in Fort Worth allowed for more daylight afterwards, which lent itself to unexpected awesomeness. Less likely for me to make it, but more likely for folks with Saturday night gigs. So how about 4pm again. I'll go and set up the event with those parameters, but it's not set in stone, so suggestions are still entirely welcome!

| | | Ok Is anybody going to do the carpool thing? If so Where will you pick up at? And When? We need to get that set up asap.
So any volunteers to drive?
Im thinking everybody who rides needs to pitch in at least $5 or so just to be fair.

| | | It's official -- I won't be there, sorry. But I hope at least... well, let's shoot for two people showing up, because it's kind of hard to have a meeting of one. Details again, from the event description, since some folks may be too far away for the automated message to kick in:
As discussed in the "US: South" forum, the DFW exploration community meetup is going to become a travelling circus! Waxahachie is a beautiful town, with dozens of old houses and businesses. Most are in great shape and inhabited, but it'll still make for a great summer road trip. And if this works out, the next stop should be Tyler! Meetup location will be at the historic Rogers Hotel ( http://www.rogershotel.com/ ), formerly the abandoned Rogers Hotel until new owners refurbished it and brought it back to its original glory. We'll meet in the mezzanine, tucked away above the lobby and reception area. If they're not too busy, the staff may be able to give us a tour, but we'll play that by ear. Address is 100 North College, on the northeast corner of College and Main, right across from the historic courthouse. There are little cafes and other places to eat on the square, but we probably won't eat at the Rogers -- they have food, but it's awfully pricey. Oh, also, it's haunted. Watch out for orbs. |
So far, we have six maybe's and five no's. So even if nobody shows up, at least there were a good number of folks sending good thoughts. With $4/gal gas, that's not so bad. PS: I haven't called the Rogers to confirm that they're ok with a UE invasion. As a backup, I'm sure anyone who shows up and gets chased out can hang out at the courthouse, admiring the maidens/gargoyles.

| | | Woah, good thing I just randomly decided to check the forum. I'd totally be up for checking out Waxahachie, especially if there is an abandoned underground facility there. I've been meaning to make it out to one of these meet n' greets but I've consistently been moving between Corpus and Dallas so I've missed just about every one. I'd also like to get down on a carpool if we get that organized and if they can make it to Richardson.
