Not sure if a building is abandoned or not
< on 1/23/2008 8:54 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I recently noticed a building near my school. The paint on the outside is peeling, the plants along the driveway are dead, curtains are drawn. However, the porchlight is on, all the time. It's on even when it's a beautiful sunny day outside. I'm not sure if this building is abandoned or not. I'll post pics later

I make love the same way I resolve arguments. With my fists.

ring the doorbell before you walk in. in rural parts of the country, you would be surprised what some people call livable conditions.

Throw a molotov cocktail at it. If people come running out on fire, it wasn't abandoned. Admitedly, if these crispypeeps were squatters, it doesn't answer the question.

Call the cops and claim you saw something shady going on there (Do this from a payphone) then watch what happens when they show.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Take a strip of paper and tape one end of it to the door and the other to the doorway. Do this to all the entrances, and check back in a couple of weeks or whenever and see if any paper has been torn.

Bubblegum works too. It is less noticeable, and harder to remove.

the whole point is seeing if it would be removed...

I think the quarter trick was mentioned here before, place a quarter near the door or something and see if its there next time.

Yeah, but someone walking by could just take it off.

Knock on the door. Pretend you are a solicitor. Leave a flyer tightly tucked in the door. If it's still there afer several days.....

The tape trick works too.

If you do a bubble gum or tape trick, put it in the keyhole. That will tell you if someone with a key tried to gain entry.

Does it snow? Tire tracks and foot prints are good giveaways.

In this economy, your target is most likely a forclosure, or a home that's taking awhile to sell.

Just be careful. I know places where the occupant passed away the the house just hasn't gone through probate yet. The next of kin could be doing a drive-by everyday or so to keep the place in check, or neighbors could be watching and many know who's supposed to be there and not.

OR
I have a friend who's grandparents own a spot on a lake in my town...
every winter they go down to Florida because it is warmer...
no one is "supposed" to be on the property, and the neighbors are "supposed" to watch it. But me and a few other friends we're having campfires out there [not even knowing it was my first friends relations property] and nobody bitched till we set off a few bottle-rockets at 9:00 on a thursday night, lol.

memorable quotes from one of the camp-fire nights:

that [NO TRESPASSING] sign bothering you? *tears down sign/buries in snow* problem solved.

hand me the lighter, ok ... get ready to run. *lights firecracker/runs like a mother *

shit that lady is pissed, fuck she let her dogs out, *run even faster*...

oh man that was GREAT!

good times, good times.

my point even if it looks abandoned it might only be temporary...

and the light may just be for dummy effect, or else somebody is going to have a very high electric bill that winter

and didnt we already have a thread about no power in abandoned buildings?

use common sense... and leave the fireworks at home.

"No risk, no reward, no fun."
"Go all the way or walk away"
escensi omnis...

Wouldn't take this one too much to heart. Right now Milwaukee is covered in snow and all the places I've been hitting recently are definitely abandoned and have footprints everywhere, either bums, taggers or other uers. I went to an industrial complex a couple of weeks ago and snow was melting, and there were tire tracks on the premises, even though the buildings there have been very clearly abandoned for decades.

But for a house, it's more likely.

Tax rolls can tell you ownership. If it says it is owned by the city in which it is located, I'd say odds are good that it is abandoned (unless you know otherwise that it is active, duh).

True with big complexes that get lots of traffic, but with houses, I look for unshoveled snow, evidence that no vehicles exited a garage or were parked overnight, or footprints that go directly from a front or back door to a vehicle.

I've been to a few houses during the snow that were empty and you can tell other explorers or scavengers were there. One had vehicle tracks that pull in to the back behind the garage, then the footprints tracked all the way around the house, and they get messy right around basement windows or exterior doors, as if they tried to see if they could gain entry. That's not something, IMO, that a typical property owner would do. You may also see marks in the snow where thieves are scavenging doors or appliances or scrap. If you see vehicle tracks and/or prints near an electrical service, it could be a meter reader. You never know.

As someone mentioned, it could be a winter home, or the owners are on a long vacation. The porch light is on for a reason.

Thanks for the great tips. I'll be trying the bubblegum trick after I try knocking on the door. I'm kind of nervous actually because I secretly fear that there's a corpse inside and the killer didn't turn off the porch light. Well, this is a sign for me to stop watching (as much) CSI.
