A little constructive criticism.

Not that I'm an especially active member.

But as a graphic artist and urban explorer, I think I should mention a few things about the mechanics of the site itself.

It's a little hard to find the "log in" page. Granted, it's in the nav bar. But traditionally it would be also on the Home page. And if it were not, it should be closer to the top, because of it's importance.

As for the home page, I think that it should be separate from the forum page. Maybe an introduction about what the goals of this site are and its high points. Some pictures to capture the eye, neat paragraphs, etc. It's amazing how far an aesthetically pleasing site (or any thing, really) can get you.

I have ideas for the site, and i'll probably map out what I think would be convenient, and desirable, to all users once I finish installing photoshop.

I understand that my opinion doesn't necessarily hold for anything, but I think that my advice would get this site a lot more hits and similarly, more locations in the database, more donations, and other goodies. :]

Bash me, flame me, pwn me. Whatever.
Just a few ideas.

Welcome no bashing or flaming just an observation....

I am sure that you are a well meaning individual but stick around for awhile and you'll see that attracting quality as opposed to volume is a goal here. Most of us are logged in 24/7 so that button is a low priority.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

Wait, I thought this section was for our websites to be critiqued. I can see where Vaan is coming from when speaking from a graphic design area. Thing is, I don't think that some of things that were mentioned are really necessary. This site has a flavor of being for the people by the people. The concept of the board works really well. Why change the site to make it look better. A lot of the pictures and such aren't from one person. Everyone contributes to what makes up this site. I mean, in reality, you're not trying to sell the site to anyone. I just don't see a reason to change something that is working so well.

Once again, they were just a few ideas.

The forums are wonderful, I agree. I just don't think they should be the home page.

There's nothing wrong with quality over quantity. I'm just trying to say that the quality needs work. If I wasn't so very interested in what this site was about, I wouldn't give it a second chance, because it was too hard to look about the site without being confused.

And lastly, this site shouldn't only be helpful to those who never look away from their screen. So the comment about being logged in 24/7 seems unfair to me.

Don't be angry. Or be angry if you want. I really am trying to help the site here, not destroy it. More people will donate money to a more helpful page.

This section is geared towards other peoples websites.

But for the topic at hand, the design of UER is at an "as is" status right now. Buttons and features have been added as needed, without thought as to the overall flow. But the good news is that this is not permanent. Per this thread: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=32867 Avatar-X is welcoming design submissions. So if you truly have ideas to improve design, put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. I also want to note that this contest has been going on for a few months now. This is because 1. Avatar-X has yet to see a submission that he likes in whole and 2. He hasn't had the time to develop something that is the best of all submissions.

WTF indeed.

I did notice that thread, but I couldn't remember where it was.

A couple questions though. Does the design have to include a code? That would require a considerable amount more work than just the design itself, but still is possible.

Just wondering.

UPDATE:
Sorry, I just read the thread over. Neglect that question.

Not meant to be unfair at all. Just that there are a large number of folks who find this site and go ape crap about it and do not take the time to get the feel of what it is all about and poof thay are gone. Just a little subtle hint to slow down with the suggestions give it a chance and it just might be all good in the end. No hard feeling intended.

This doesn't really make any sense. Unless you select the button to only stay logged in for this session, UER places a cookie on your computer that keeps you logged in until you clear your cookies. This means you can come back a day later or a month later and still be logged in. It has nothing to do with be in front of your computer 24/7.

I personally would love it if more new people were confused by the site and never came back. It would greatly reduce the number of asshats around here. On a site like this, more hits is definitely not necessarily a good thing.

Thanks for your opinions.

The best way to make a difference would be to submit an entry into the design contest. No code is required -- see that thread for specifications and examples.

The home page is not the forum page -- the "Home" button refers to "Forum Home". The actual home page can be accessed by clicking the UER logo, or by directly visiting www.uer.ca .
