| | | Hey guys, my name is Lee. I'm new here and happened to stumble upon this site while searching for abandoned locations. I'm from NC and I am very fascinated by abandoned buildings/houses. I believe these locations make for amazing photography. I hope to find more locations through this site and I also hope to get to know you guys through post. I also look forward to browsing through the photo section. Anyways, here's my hello.

| | | hi, im a insurance investigator based in pgh pa and work the pa, oh, wv and sometimes upstate ny. i developed a taste for this sort of thing from sneaking into places to investigate insurance related accidents [usually fatal ones] without the cooperation of the insureds. i often ended up in odd areas working cases and sometimes had shortdays with nothing to do but cruise around. when i was a kid in northern WV myself and friends used to explore a abandoned county farm/mental facility that had partially burned down and still had some tunnels connecting the buildings ruins. photography being a related skill, i started to take photos of the areas i explored. in time i found that i enjoyed the picture taking as much as the exploring. i must admit that i have often used my investigator credentials to save me from local pd's and security. i just tell them that i'm working a insurance related case, and most know not bother asking about the client, so i'm cool. even if i am asked to leave i won't incur any legal penalties. i hope to post a bit of my photography efforts soon. i'm also int the sca, and elizabethan perios fencing. shooting and the usual.

| | | I'm a new user and rather new to the whole Urban Exploration thing, having only hit the old TB hospital in Louisville, and I've been to the half built nuclear facility in Madison, In but that's about it. I live in the Louisville area, and it doesn't look like much is around here so if I could get any tips, I'd be grateful. I've been reading around the site a bit over the last few months, so I have a general idea of what I need to bring with me, but any odd bits that you don't usually think of would be nice to know too.

| | | Hey, welcome to the board. Check out the Tutorials / Useful Info forum for more info on gear. What you're probably going to want a P100 respirator if you're worried about getting lung diseases. That and a good light are all that I really bring beside my camera, of course. Hope you enjoy your stay. Brian

| | | Ah kk, I was thinking about stuffs like a good first aid kit, in case of unforseen accidents and the like, maybe rope in case of a floor collapse and such. A respirator is an absolute necessity really, Cancer is not a pretty thing.

| | | I use a combination of my initials for my tag, I'm not oversized at all. I've been exploring all over NJ, Pa, NY, Del, and MD.for many years. My wife and kids also love to go to abandoned places with me. I've also explored in Germany around Bavaria for a couple of years. I hope to meet a few of you in person at one of your events soon. Thank you.

| | | Hello, I happened upon this site last night while looking for information on the abandoned neighborhood in Pickering Ontario known as Squires Beach. I was disappointed to read that the buildings were recently demolished but decided to drive there today anyway. The Rogers house is still there but I didn't get much of a chance to look around because a security guard showed up after a few minutes. Does anyone know anything about the other abandoned neighborhood in Pickering? It's on the east side of Church St just north of Rossland Rd (If you reach the cemetary you've gone too far). After leaving Squires Beach today I drove up there and could clearly see many houses boarded up but there were several "No Trespassing" and "Beware of Dogs" signs so I didn't get out to take a look. I've heard that the residents were forced to evacuate because of ground contamination but don't know if thats true or not. If anyone has any information on this I'd love to hear from you

| | | Name's Alex. Found this on stumbleupon.com. Grew up in a rural area w/ woods and abandoned buildings in the woods and whatnot. Usually you weren't supposed to go in, but it's not like there are police in the middle of the forest. Went to Vassar college and went virtually everywhere you're not supposed to go on Campus (if anyone is looking for somewhere interesting in there feel free to ask). Now I live in NYC and would love some kind of new place to wander around. I've taken to just going to the ghetto with a friend and wandering around with $10 and a metro card... but I'd rather go somewhere less likely to get me shot.

| | | Hi, I'm Fritz. I have been exploring tunnels and abandoned buildings since I was a child. In the late 90s I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore quite a few places in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC in that have recently been refurbished, or demolished by sprawl/gentrification. These included many houses, an kiddie amusement park, a powerplant, a church, a sprawling elaborate military medical campus, and a wonderbread factory. The reservoir that you may recognize from my userpic has not been demolished yet, but I understand that they have plans for it. Over the last 7 years I traveled around the country and squatted many abandoned structures in cities such as Philadelphia PA, New York NY (both Manhattan and Brooklyn), Asheville NC, New Orleans LA, Bisbee AZ, Los Angeles CA (Hollywood area), the San Francisco Bay Area (including SF, Berkeley, Oakland, and Albany) and Portland OR. Over the years I learned to be very respectful of the buildings I inhabited, whether as a visitor or as a temporary resident. I lived in abandoned houses, also schools, factories, hospitals, restaurants, churches, a movie theatre, a bowling alley, an oil refinery, a water tower, a subway station, a railroad dining car, and a boat, to name a few. I also ended up sleeping outside alot, which generally sucked. I rarely had a camera. Along the way I also got a chance to explore abandoned structures including barns, a motel, a gas station, and a grain elevator that I found while walking along desolate stretches of highway, and I rode some freight trains. This was all wonderful, but my life was basically a mess. I am crazy and I have some health problems, so I decided to settle down and try to get my act together. This Fall I returned to the DC suburbs, and I am attending community college. Now I am becoming increasingly restless. I miss the traveling, but perhaps more than anything else I miss the buildings, the lost secrets, the languages of decay. Most of the buildings that I explored as a young teen in the DC suburbs are gone, but I have a vehicle now, and I am willing to venture farther. I have tools, and what I lack in physical strength I make up for in experience. I have joined this site hoping to find information about new places to explore, and possibly also to find some other folks to explore with. I willing to be a guide for those with less experience, provided that they are respectful both to me, and to the structures. If you are a bigot or you hate women, queers, trannies, homeless people, or crazy people, then I am not interested in talking to you. My webpage (which I haven't updated in far too long) is http://www.pigeonpress.org , and in addition to containing some artwork and zines, it also features, typically as background images, some photos of abandoned structures that I have taken over the years, and pictures taken by a friend of a friend during a fashion show we organized on an abandoned elevated railroad line. I am full of old stories, but I am looking for new adventures.
Here is a picture of The Penguin Orphanage, an abandoned house in New Orleans that I lived in for several months. My friend Mosca (who died last year) opened this house as a squat. It was a beautiful space, with a grand central staircase and a big porch. It was burned to the ground by vandals before Katrina hit, but I think that Katrina would have likely taken it out anyway. Lots of nice memories in that house.
