Great to see another old guy on here! Welcome aboard.

Hehehe And here I was thinking I was old at 32 ;)

Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth’s fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.

Hi Zar...photography and UE go together like hand-in-glove. Is your camera a digital SLR? If so, where did you get it and how much? My camera recently vanished and I would love to get a replacement. If I could get a relatively cheap digital SLR (under $500) it would make my day. I don't really need anything over 5 megapixels but if the price is right, what the hey.

Before you go out, I'd recommend you also pick up a tripod. Natural light photos are fantastic but you need a long exposure time. Also, a light backpack, flashlight, gloves, eye/breathing/head protection are a good idea. Each site requires slightly different prep, but you're unlikely to go wrong with this equipment.

no, unfortunately i could not afford a digital camera. but i got a decent camera, nonetheless, for $120. i'll use this one for a while until i become more proficient, then upgrade to a slr digital camera.

you know, you can probably find a good deal at one of those pawn shops along church street. it's worth giving a look

im a high-school student, since there arent many abandonments around here, i mostly do live buildings. I especially enjoy taking pictures from roofs, as the ann arbor skyline is very picturesque. I have no problems with these buildings, as im pretty good at social engineering. Other than UE, I really enjoy cycling, and yes, I do get up and watch the Tour de France. Want to know any more? than you can PM me.

Hello

My name is zenlogic, i live in small town Minnesota now, 45 years old, if you want to read a short bio, see here:
http://www.edwardkarn.com/zenframe.html

I was into ue'ing a long time ago, haven't done much in some 30 years, except the odd small abandoned buildings.

Got my start back in the 70's in the old Cambridge state hospital tunnels and buildings, before it closed down, i worked there for a summer as a asst. phys. therapist.

Been in the st. peter state hospital tunnels, a friend of mine worked there and we used to meet after his shift for some exploring, saw the cave dwellings and such that some of the saner patients stayed in, some cool stuff. There is a legend about jesse james having a hide out in the caves down that way, tried finding them a few times, never successful.

I have also did the soo line yard and round house, my dad worked there and used to take me with sometimes. Been in the pit in the old round house and in the old soo line office building, and road the man belt there once.

I have also done a lot of looking around on big construction sites, back in the 90's prior lake put in a new deep pit Reservoir, i ue'ed down there one night before they finished and domed it over, you can see it just down the road on hwy 13, north of 42, it was at least a 100 feet deep. That was my last big ue.

Just recently i have been interested in a small dying town out by us. It has several old buildings from the 1800's, the 30's and the 40's. Unimin is trying to buy it all out and level it for gravel pits, i want to get into as many as i can to take pictures, for the hell of it i guess, i don't know, somebody should.

Any how, it's nice to read the forums, some of you are just insane with what you do(in a good way), and the photos, they are excellent....
some day, when my health is better, i want to do the triple helix, here in mpls/st.paul, in fact i am pretty sure where the entrance is from pictures and google map, and i will scout it out this summer. i have seen a ton of stuff on it(action squad) and for some reason think it would be just the coolest to see.
(don't ever expect to see all my i's capitalized, will never happen, sorry.)
thank for the vicarious thrills.

Indeed I would.

well. Incidentally, GPS is ideal for setting waypoints of UE sites for future reference.

Uhuh. I was also thinking the use of a compass and starting location for those who can't/won't use GPS units. Have you found limitations to your GPS in terms of location (eg. won't work underground, etc)?

A big hello too everyone..I'm an oldtimer going on 44 years old and couldn't

Don't worry old timer, you're still okay with us

Actually, I was rather surprised that a number of people I've been in contact with are older (over 30)...myself included. I suspect that making it a serious hobby requires some outlay of cash...digicam, etc. Basides, does the spirit ever really die?

for a small basic GPS without maps but shows waypoints the Foretrex series by garmin is pretty sexy..
http://www.garmin....ducts/foretrex201/

If you want maps of roads and that kinda stuff I would recommend the Legend, it's pretty small and has everything you really need..
http://www.garmin....ducts/etrexLegend/

Both are around 150-180ish

Hmmm...sounds good. I probably won't get one (if I do) until spring, but I'll focus on these two first. Price range sounds right. Are they shock resistant/water proof at all?

Ahh..Queen street; haven't been there in a dog's age. I guess I should take a look if I can save a few bucks; camera's taken a beating in the past so maybe it's better to get a used one.

So now that you're ready to go, have you gotten into any places?

I was in the Marine Corps for 8 years and got out in 2000 and now develop websites for a living...

You were a marine and you do websites and you're nervous? Fahgetaboutit! Make sure you're well prepped and you'll be fine. After you've been in a few places, it'll be like nothing. Besides, I'm sure your military training should have prepared you for just about any situation you may face.

Looking forward to seeing your pics.

Man, you got a *lot* of hardware in your house. Your kids are going to grow up well-versed in everything. Good on ya!

Hey, if you've got good life insurance there's no need for vicariousness. When you're out there, you feel no pain...

BTW, I looked at your exploration of the schoolhouse (nice, nice)...I noticed that big pile of mesh-like objects. Are those wastpaper baskets? Looks like they just tossed everything into the basement!

Thanks, yep, they are well versed in all things tech, and above all that they are great kids, all 8 of them.

Thanks again, I think the place is used as a junk yard by a near by farm. The waste basket looking things are really only half circles, short answer is "I don't know". Long answer, "i beleve they are laying racks for chickens, maybe." It's the only thing comes to my mind. One of these days i will run into a local who can tell me more.

Hi everyone! I'm not sure how I stumbled across this website but I'm glad I did!! I remember exploring old abandoned houses when I was growing up as well as the usual nooks and crannies of the outdoors, etc... Just reading through some of the content here has stirred up a lot of memories and desire to get out there and check some stuff out. I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions and will try to share the fruits of my exploits as best I can.

Hehehe Its not the physical things that I am nervous about. People and animals I can handle no problem. Its the things that go bump in the night that get me... Yeah... I know... Big tough Marine afraid of the dark... hahaha

On a bit of a side note, I did my first UE yesterday and posted my 2 fav pics on the critique board...

Groovy. I'll check 'em out.

I used to be a bit nervous about dark things too. Best way to get rid of the fear is to pick a path through the woods that you know and make your way through it on a pitch-black night. After about 40 minutes you get used to it. After an hour and a half, you start to have fun ;)

Woods?? I've heard of those.... I vaguely remember something like them when I was up in WA.... No woods down here in Beautiful sunny SoCal.... But I get the point ;) hehehe
