We went by there last weekend and got a guided tour. It's a crying shame what some people have done to this place. Kids get in and just start breaking everything they see. One ghost hunter group decided that all the antique rose mirrors in the Brazos Room (nice dining room) were portals for ghost to come across from the other side so they commenced to breaking them all. They got all but a few before they were stopped and thrown out. There's not much there as far as graffiti but just damage from the destructive little minds that feel they have to break things. We had a great time but the light really didn't cooperate for what I wanted to do. I'll post a few pix within the next few days.

It is truly unfortunate that we have to share some of our finest playgrounds with those paranormal half wits. Why dont they just go play dungeons and dragons on a busy freeway?

Clarify something for us. Last report was anyone caught trespassing in The Baker would immediately be thrown in the slammer and fined. Now we are told the mirror busting ghostbusters only got thrown out? Who caught them? Were they on a guided tour also?

Well said. It's enough to listen to their theories (though it can be entertaining at times, if for no other reason than a laugh) but when they start breaking things it makes me want to let them know how they would feel to get their "things" broken.

Baker gets makeover inspection

City in favor of helping finance costs through special district creation

A team of architects and engineers representing prospective buyer Bill Pratt Jr. surveyed the Baker Hotel on Friday signaling the first serious attempt to renovate the detetiorating property in years.
Pratt, a Dallas resident, is the son of the late Bill Pratt who served as Palo Pinto County Attorney from 1961 to 1974. The senior Pratt, a Missouri native, came to Mineral Wells in 1955 to join brothers Jack and Ed. They developed many commercial properties in Mineral Wells in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and later went on to develop hotels, casinos and restaurants around the world.
Pratt recently entered into a contract to purchase the 450-room hotel from Gregory Horne, of Phoenix, Ariz. Sources report that a 180-day due diligence clause gives Pratt time to consider a developement plan for the property before the deal closes.
The sources report that the sale is contingent on apporval by the U.S. Department of Interior so that Pratt can obtain low-interest loans and tax breaks to make the expensive renovation of the historic hotel an economically viable venture. Pratt will also ask the City of Mineral Wells to establish a tax increment financing district to asstist the project.
Mayor Clarence Holliman said Friday, "We've been excited about this possiblitiy coming to fruition, I think it would jump-start that portion of downtown."
"I feel confident that city council is in favor of establishing a TIF to make the project viable and bring the Baker back to life. It would benefit our community in ways we would never dream of."
A TIF is a way of raising money to off-set the cost of public improvements such as sidewalks, sewer and water lines. City Manger Lance Howerton said city council must wait until Pratt submits specific development plans before futher consideration of a TIF.
Holliman said, "Mr. Howerton and I have been in constant contact with Mr. Pratt and his attorneys and will be guided buy how they put this together."
Opening in 1929, the 13 story hotel was a landmark resort until the 1960s. It was purchased from Baker family interests in 1965 by the Civic Development Corporation, a consortium of Mineral Wells businessmen, then sold in 1972 to Seth Horne, father of the current owner. Basically vacant for nearly 30 years, it was declared a public safety hazard and permanently closed by city authorities in March 2003 to keep tresspassers out.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

The owner used to allow "ghost buster" groups into the hotel to investigate paranormal phenomena. I would assume that this group was in the hotel with permission and just went off the deep end. Jayne just told me that they were asked to leave immediately and didn't elaborate further than that. She did say that she doesn't let ghost groups in anymore. I used to belong to a ghost investigation group but we used more scientific methods like monitoring temp, radiation, electromagnetic fields and such. What the problem is, is that there are quite a few groups out there that consist mostly of so called psychics and they go mostly on what the leader (or head medium) says they feel is going on with no hard evidence of anomalous activities. There are ghost groups that set up sensors and camera and such then sit back and monitor what happens over a given period. There are others that run all over the hotel just looking for the thrill of being scared.

As far as trespassing goes, if the police catch you, they will arrest and hold you until the owner or the property manager are contacted to see if they want to press charges. If Jayne (the property manager) or Ronny (her "security guard" catches you, they can't arrest so they chase you off or call the police to catch you if they can't. If you get arrested, Jayne usually can't be reached till after about 9am the following morning. Ronny has been known to babysit the hotel overnight to try and catch people. She also said that not too long ago, the police arrested a could of drunk 40-something "kids" that were throwing stuff through the windows rather high up. Seems they did quite a bit of damage to cars and other buildings in the process. Some people just drive me nuts with thier stupidity.

Did you get any shots of Jayne's house on 6th?
It was built in 1910m and from what she says it should be an historical landmark. (She's very proud)

I didn't get any pix of Jayne's house this trip. I was really a bit disappointed with the results I got of the hotel and I'm planning on going back when the weather's nicer which should gain better results. We were kind of rushed through because Jayne was concentrating on the tour she was giving us and it really didn't allow us to linger any one place too long. The next time we go out, I'll have plans for certain locations and I'll be able to get the pix I want.

Stop by the house on the hill at 2nd and 2nd (In your photos) next time. It's a cool old house with some great views of the Baker as well as the rest of town.

Funny, I count four.

I can only answer the last one. That house is mine. I recently purchased it from the city for the low low cost of one dollar. Why so low you ask? Because it's an area they want developed, it's been sitting there for years, and they'll make more off of me in the form of taxes when I fix it up.

BTW
Did you call them to turn off the water? That pipe behind the old shower was cracked and had been spraying for a while. It was rotting the floor in the closet in the back bedroom.

1) Coffee Shop or diner at the hotel
2) It's at huge marble massage table that was mounted in the wall. There were two alcoves with two massage table each in both the women's and men's spa areas. Someone tried to get these out and wound up breaking most of them
3) It is a ventilation hood over that table in the laundry room. It was used to carry away the rotting corpse fumes before they tossed the bodies in the incinerator around the corner. LOL It was actually not there to take fumes out but to take heat away and cause a bit of ventilation in this closed in room. Laundries can get kind of hot, especially in the summer. The table is not original but is just there for show.
4) the house out back is an abandoned house about a block from the hotel that we went through later that day.
