| | | Some shots from an old hotel west of town. Originally built in 1929. Didnt get a chance to go through it in as much detail due to time and a tour coming through so scheduling a trip back in a couple of weeks, not to mention hopefully it will be cooler! Main Ballroom at top of building

Construction on the Hotel began in 1926 and had it's Grand opening in 1929, right before the Stock Market Crash. It was ran by the Bakers up until 1963 when Earl Baker retired and closed it. it sat vacant for a while until a local group bought it and reopened it with limited sucess, it closed basically for good in 1972. Although several businesses have run out of the street level storefronts until a couple of years ago when the city began clamping down on code issues and the large amount of trespassers. They do still however allow tours and a few weddings and events to be held in the main lobby and ballroom. I have a website for them at home but am posting this from work and dont have it here. The ballroom is on the top floor. The lobby is on the 1st floor and is in great shape.

I spoke with the lady who manages the property for the old owner and now the new owner and she says the new owner's official plans are to gut and convert the hotel into condos. She also confided that there's a bill up for vote in Austin that would allow casino gambling. The unofficial word is that if this bill passes, this will become one of the first casino hotels in the state. A casino would truthfully be about the only thing that this hotel would be able to make money at. Engineers have said that the parking garage across the street would allow two more levels to be added for more parking and since the new owner is local, other lots in tha area could be converted to parking. There is also a very nice golf course close by and other family activities that could be called into play for a nice casino hotel. The owner is also reportedly trying to negotiate with the old church across the street from the hotel so he won't run into any problems with gaming areas being too close to schools or churches in case the bill passes.
