i feel strongly you should only take what fits into your pockets, so wear cargos, and if its any bigger just come back with a truck.

in all seriousness i feel a site should be left as is, but if you know the place is being plowed under in the next few days i would rather see somthing go to use than sit in a landfill

I could give a fuck about the "morals" of theft in an abandonment. Its totally up to the discression of the explorer. i almost never take anything but that's because I rarely find fun in taking other people's shit. Its also a legal thing, but that aside do what you will. If any ethics nazi's chew you out then ignore them.

I hate all of you

Do whatever you want, and don't be influenced by any self appointed arbiters of morality on the internet.

Thanks, Caveman, for taking the words right out of my fingers.

Personally, I take pictures, trinkets, tools, whatever.

A phenomenal example is here:

I big fan of Honda, and also a big fan of Marvin Gaye.

I happen to own a piece of paper that proves that, at some point, Marvin Gaye owned a Honda. This piece of paper has a whole hell of alot more life in my artifact collection than it did in a filing cabinet in an abandoned building.

You mileage may vary.

here's another one:

The beatles' "HELP" getting STOMPED by the sound of music and herb alpert in the top 100. This one even still has dusty footprints on it, having been stepped on by other explorers.

take only pictures, leave footprints on priceless artifacts.

Nobody will ever win this argument on should I or shouldn't I....too much ideology involved, only personal opinion. Personally I never even get the urge to take stuff from places I visit, the desire to take stuff doesn't even enter my head so I've never had to stop and think it through. I consider myself fortunate.

You may think you can fly.....but you'd better not try it.

I took the blueprints of a now torn-down steam plant. I was really just walking around the parimeter and they were stuck underneath the fence, so I grabbed them. I now have the diagrams to the steam turbine hanging on my wall. Framed.

It's like wreck-diving - leave it be. Ultimately, it's more junk that ties you down, unless you're selling it, in which case you're not doing UE.

Usually I say, "Take only pictures, Leave only footprints" but I have been guilty of taking a couple keys from various buildings. But, when I'm in a drain, I consider anything fair game. I've got an old rusted road sign I found down there, and Charrellz has a pretty impressive antique Dr. Pepper collection going. Mostly, you've got to ask yourself, "Is anyone going to miss this?" Since I don't think anyone will even notice something like a key missing, I take them. And since me and Charrellz are the only drainers I know about in our area, nobody's going to miss anything down there. Just remember getting caught with something quickly changes trespassing to theft and burglary.

Rest in Peace, Ninjalicious. I know that wherever you are, you're finding the best sites for us already.

That does make sense, because drains belong to the municipality, so free game works.

There were far too many hobo buckets at the Bay NIKE site At least no rednecks had gotten the bright idea to shoot them.

But at the same time you can make a legal salvage claim on a ship wreck and remove what you want.

I strongly believe in leaving everything as you found it and I try to explore with people who feel the same way.

I think of it this way; I would hate to explore a place where people had taken all of the cool stuff, so why would I want to make others deal with that. If something is cool, I take a picture.

Early last year I was checking out an old Burnaby house that was slated for redevelopment. I found something I really wanted, and knew I was the best candidate for ownership. So I put it in my bag and continued my tour. Later, in the attic, I found the motherlode. A young historian's dream come true. Overflowing shoeboxes of old letters dating back to the 30's. Christmas cards, love letters, bank statements, you name it it was there. Some of the letters and cards hadn't even been opened.

Hmmmm, what does one do?!? Well, I bit the bullet. I put my stolen object back where I had found it, went back out the door I came in, and made a phone call to city officials. I told them that I had been in the old house and had come across this huge chunk of history.

With gratitude for the heads up, the head of the planning department put a hold on the demo permit, and pressured the developer to let us BOTH in (legally) to take photos of the home for a historical reference. Once inside, we "FOUND" the old letters, and at that point proceeded to obtain permission to take anything either of us wanted. So in the end, we saved some history (Museum officials are still sifting through the letters) and I got my trinket. THE END

I hope you believe me when I say that I too believe in taking only pictures and leaving only footprints, but there are times where you have to weigh against the likelihood that something you would kill to have... is only going to get stolen or bulldozed, so why not put it in the care of someone who will cherish and protect it? Not hardly a new morral dilemma.... Case in point... Over 100 years after the great fire of 1898 that destroyed most of New Westminister, someone came forward with the original Burnaby crest and official seal... something that was determined to have been destroyed. This person's parents had it stashed in their underwear drawer all this time, and its return made headlines. Something not considered valuable today can be someones prayer down the road, so how can you pick it up, admire it, and put it back down knowing full well that a big yellow Cat is gonna mash it into the ground in a few days?!?
