your opinion...

Hi, I'm new here, actually found the page while I was trying to locate an abandoned dog food factory. I basically started exploring in April, and generally all we've done is houses. But I was a little puzzled when I read the theory on infiltration(of which I have several of the paper copies of, being a zine-freak). When we've gone in houses, and found something that was cool/useful, we keep it. But I don't really count that as 'theft', because the houses are obviously abandoned, and the people who once resided there obviously took all they cared for.

So I was just wondering what the general feeling on 'keeping treasures' is.

Well, personally I leave everything just as it was, and take nothing. It wouldn't probably hurt anybody if took some stuff, but I don't see the need for that. As well, I would rather buy something than use some item that has dusted twenty years in some dirty abandoned place.

Welcome to UER

Everyone has a different view on taking things form abandoned sites. My feelings are to leave things where they are so others can see them. Think of it this way; If 500 explorers go through a site in a year and take stuff or possibly destroy things then when explorer #501 enters to get some cool pics and check things out all he finds is an empty shell. Taking from sites cant be controlled but try to think about the other explorers that might want to see what you wanted to take someday. Just my 2 cents

my opinion is moot but I would call it theft

the State of Texas calls it burglary AND theft

Welcome to UER, girlunderglass. Yeah, this is a pretty touchy subject, but always one worth discussing. I have to admit, I have taken trinkets in the past. I took an old glass Coke bottle from a factory in Brantford, and I took a restaurant vinegar dispenser once. I have also seen explorers with me take maps, blueprints, and other interesting bits and pieces, and I kept my mouth shut about it.

This doesn't mean it was right. I look back on that and think "Why did I do that?".

I think Darkwolf sums it up pretty nicely and logically.

Welcome to UER! As my general rule, I leave nothing but footprints behind unless I have permission to do so otherwise. For example, I have taken various items from Fostoria, including papers, documents, checks, etc. for scanning. In another hospital which I had permission to gather artifacts for, I collected historical documents that were donated to the hospital but abandoned when the hospital closed.

If something's going to be thrown in a landfill site/burnt/rot away anyway why not take it? I think the last thing I took was a rusty old tin cornice cornerpiece from a house which has been ruined by man and nature already.

I went inside an old "help-for-students" building not to long ago and was stuck with a dilemma: Grab the books that were left behind, or leave them be. Have an amazing interest in behavior and psychology made the choice hard on me: I left them behind.

The reason is two fold:
a) I wanted to leave things this interesting for the next people who would wander inside
b) Legally speaking, it could be considered theft. Anything abandoned still belongs to somebody. Just less trouble, that's all.

For the most part...Iam under the belief of "Take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints"...however, with that said... a few years back I had an opportunity to move into an old farmhouse that was complete with an even older barn....we naturally explored the whole house...basement to attic and moved on to the barn...whilst in the barn we found some items that had not seen the light of day for years...some of these things were: an old coke bottle, old can of chewing tobacco, seriously old pack of ciggerettes (Export A), lanturn, and some odds and ends of farm equipment....

We did keep the pack of ciggerettes and coke bottle because the company that owned the property was bull-dozing the barn and we figured they would not take the time to explore and find these things...but I totally agree with leaving things as they are for other ppl to enjoy and see....

Well, what darkwolf said about leaving stuff for other people, I had never really thought anyone else who was actually interested in what was inside an abandonment would go in. Because I never even considered there was actually a community of people who did this! I figured just junkies and maybe runaways inhabited the places.

Mostly what we take is photos. At one house I kept a really old, really cheap painting. At one we found a stack of papers that had belonged to the man who owned the house hidden in a crevice in a closet. I dont know, besides the standpoint of letting other people see the same site you did, I dont see a problem with it. Its not doing anything for anyone collecting dust!

I don't want to create any animosity, I was really just interested in what others had to say.

I don't personally take anything from a site.

But old paper or a glass bottle or something I really don't see the problem. The problem are the folks that go to a recently closed site and remove large machines and what not.

The generally accepted ethic code is 'take only pictures, leave only footprints' as rapunzel said. Everybody has a slightly different viewpoint on taking things. A few people are militantly against it and have even gone so far as to shop fellow explorers to the police before, some people view an exploring trip as a souvenir free-for-all and leave every site with their pockets and bags stuffed.

The vast majority of people fall between the two extremes, myself included. I have taken a few artifacts before, things that have no impact on the site itself such as a company-stamped sheet of paper from a site containing thousands of identical sheets, or a few nuts and bolts from a machine shop. I would not take anything unique unless it was in imminent danger of being destroyed, because if I think 'wow, that's cool' when I find something, it's nice to leave it for others to see as well. If the place is going to be demolished or cleared in the next few weeks, I'll grab stuff for the sake of it not ending up in a landfill, but otherwise it stays.

There's also the legal side. If you're caught by a cop, having anything from the site means you can be charged with Burglary or Criminal Damage if the object was secured in any way. In this country at least, trespassing is a civil offence which you cannot be prosecuted for; Burglary and Criminal damage both carry a prison sentence. I suspect the penalties are similarly increased in the US.

Personally I'm for the don't take anything but pictures side of things. Besides, you take a picture of the item, and you'll remember how cool it was, and plus you'll leave it for the enjoyment of other explorers who will follow you.

I've taken a few things, spent ammunition from a site on a military base, knobs from a hidden away control panel in a site that was otherwise almost completely riddled with bullet holes and shotgun pellet damage. I don't feel bad about removing stuff thats obviously trash (military detritus, stuff abandoned after the initial abandonment), or that pretty much has a death sentence due to vandal activity. I'd even go so far as to say if you can put something to immediate use, why not take it? It's certainly not being utilized in it's present state, and will probably get broken or tossed by passerby or the owner at some point irregardless. I wouldn't take things that are integral and very significant to a site though, case in point being, say, stained glass windows in a church. I've seen lots of pics of older church buildings, and they always have those removed for the most part, heavily detracting from the site regardless of who or why they were taken out.

Pretty much what he said. Everyone does their own thing when it comes to UE, do what you want thats what I say. We misjudged a house once we thought was abandoned, turned out it was under renovation and we where "Breaking and Entering." Thats what the neighbor yelled at us anyway, make your own judgement, thats always best.
