Trusted System, MARK II
< on 3/21/2005 8:39 PM >

Alright, I present to you, the population of UER, a solution to some of the problems we've been having over the last few months. This solution will solve "snitching" problems, security issues, and trust issues.

HOW IT IS NOW
Once you have an account, you're able to log in and see pretty much everything. The LDB, the forums, all that good stuff.

THE NEW WAY

THREE LEVELS OF USER ACCESS

Level 1 - Not logged in / account not approved / The General Public

- Can see the OTHER forum, and not much else. Can see "Demolished" locations in LDB, no UE forums, no Chat, no Events, no private boards, no search, no memberlist.

Level 2 - Logged in, with "untrusted" account (all UER members are currently at this level)

- Can see the OTHER and MAIN UE forum (not regional boards), and not much else. Can see "Demolished" locations in LDB. Can access chat. Can access any private boards they have been made a member of. Can NOT start their own private boards.

Level 3 - Logged in with a "trusted" account

- Can see everything. Can chat, can use LDB, can create and edit locations, can join private boards that are public membership, etc etc.

[Added section of old post for clarity. - Servo]

Alright. Mark I didn't work. It's time to try Mark II. This system was voted the most likely to succeed amongst the moderators.

Legend:
Upcoming Phase
Phase Underway
Phase Completed

Under this system, all Level 3 access is assigned by Moderators ONLY. Everyone begins with Level 2 access.

Phase A
expected duration: 2-3 days

In this phase, moderators will go through the memberlist and mark their friends and acquaintances as Level 3. Only people moderators trust closely and/or have actually met will become Level 3.

Phase B
expected duration: 1-2 weeks

In this phase, members who have become Level 3 will be allowed to "recommend" their close friends for Level 3 access. Each recommendation will be personally reviewed by either a moderator that the member chooses, or any moderator at random. The recommending member will have to type a few words of why they feel this person deserves Level 3, and the member being recommended will also be allowed to enter a few words. The reviewing moderator will examine the evidence and make a decision.

Phase C
final phase

In Phase C, any member who is still Level 2 and has been a registered user for more than 30 days will be allowed to request Level 3 access. They will provide references as they see fit, such as web sites or other people to contact to back up their story. Their moderator of choice (or a random moderator) will review the case and make a decision.

In Phase C, there will be an appeal process if the case is denied.

The administration of UER feels that this system will solve many of the problems we have now.

Q. What if I don't know anybody?
A. Wait for Phase C. You will be able to apply for Level 3 status. A moderator will examine your post history and determine whether you are a good choice based on the impression they get from you.

Q. This system sucks! I don't like having to beg for Level 3!
A. It's not begging. We tried a system in which the membership assigned Level 3 access, and it didn't work. In order to keep the community together and to help people trust each other, we're rolling out this system. It's a small price to pay to be part of a great community.

Q. Can I buy Level 3 access?
A. No.

Q. What's the quickest way of getting Level 3?
A. Arrange to meet with a moderator in your area. If there is none, arrange to meet other Level 3 members in your area. Prove yourself to be a trustworthy person.

Q. Will getting Level 3 help me do better in school?
A. It can't hurt!

Thank you for your time.

Update Mar 22/05: We're now into Phase B.

If you are Level 3, you'll find a button in the Profile View that says Recommend This User. Browse to the profile of a friend of yours, and click on that button. You'll be able to enter a few details. After that, a moderator will review it.

Please go ahead now and recommend your friends.

Note: people who abuse this system will be blocked from using it.

Seems better than the first system, but let's just hope not too many users are left behind because they don't know anyone on the forum!

Huh, seems a bit restrictive, but I'll hold criticism until this plays itself out. It's certainly worth a shot!

And, whether any successful system is actually implemented, I just want to thank you (AV) and the mods for putting in so much work on this. I think some level of security a great idea. This new system sounds like a lot of work for the mods so they deserve a bit of a thanks.

And yes, I am being sincere, not sucking up to the mods. Much as I love the DB I spend much more time on the forums anyway. I'd survive just fine without level 3 access.

This looks promissing, Reminds me of the old trusted system where only moderators could mark as trusted, but with the new phases, It looks like it could become promissing, plus we need some form of system like this, and the first try went down hill with everyone trusting everyone.

A few things I think are worth repeating.

The point of this is promote more safety and security within the site. Any disclusion of good intentioned folk is merely an oversite and not meant to be an insult.

For those lurkers that like to peruse the threads, stories, and pictures on the site, it's great that you enjoy the contributions of others. It would be greater for you to contribute too. Post in a thread, hang in chat for a bit. Feeling shy? Just post a pic then, we'd like to see the places you've been too. Or, you can be real adventurous and go and and meet some explorers. I know they'd love to meet you.

If you're still feeling uneasy about this, just give it a chance. Hang tight and see what happens. If your still unhappy, talk to a mod. Remember though, it's easier to catch flies with honey.

Thank you and have a nice day.

It's also easier to be happier about a trust system when you're marked level 3 from day 1

EDIT: I failed idiom school.

I was going to correct you, but you beat me to it. Bees eat pollen and poop honey. No need to lure them with it.

Uhmmmm...

Would a mod. kindly mark myself or at least someone in my country as 'trusted' ? That way the above suggestion of Av's becomes possible, as I don't think anyone from Scotland has met any of the mods here in person? Although we did just miss Crossfire's visit by a few days!!

Many thanks!

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

People not personally known by mods will be taken care of in Phases B and C. Please wait until that time. In the future, please read the post before posting.

That's a little bit passive aggressive for a straight forward question... So I'll reply in kind:

When you talked about 'the quickest way of getting Level 3' you were in fact just babbling as for the large majority of your membership, it's just not possible. In future, please check what you type makes sense.

You might wanna remove that part about fast track Level 3, or clarify that it's not applicable to but a select few.

Chris...

I thought it was pretty clear that the "Quickest way" would obviously not be practical for those people who don't live near a mod, but apparently you don't find this clear enough. So let me rephrase:

Q. What's the quickest way of getting Level 3?
A. Arrange to meet with a moderator in your area. If there is none, arrange to meet other Level 3 members in your area. Prove yourself to be a trustworthy person. If there are no Level 3 members or moderators in your area, you'll have to use the request form in Phase C to become level 3.

Ok, this sounds pretty fair. With this method it atleast gives a chance for those users who are trustworthy, but who don't personally know any of the Moderators or their trusted members.

I love contributing my comments and ideas, and I'm glad that it will be possible in the future, and at the same time protecting the interests and security of this community.

Although I am not a fan of restricting the access to this site, I feel that this approach is far superior to the first attempt. I believe in the long run this method will work. I just hope I don't get too much done at work while I wait to see if I can get level 3, LOL. My productivity skyrockets when UER is down.
