The question is, why was there a tunnel connecting a Vaudeville Theater to a neighbour's house?

Dangit, you beat me to the punchline.

Seriously, though, I've no clue why there's a tunnel connecting the two houses. Or whether or not there's any connection to the vaudeville theatre.

The neighbor really didn't care to divulge any information either, considering me and my friend aren't on his happy list for busting through his basement wall.

I've seen tracks like that in drains. It's most likely raccoons.

Maybe, but they were a good 4-5 feet up a wall.

A raccoon possessed by satan?

As for the tunnel, maybe the buildings used to have different purposes. Even so, I can't see why there would be a tunnel.

Out in Rhode Island, I got a friend that inherited a few acres of land from his grandad who passed away in 1998 and he invited me to come check it out with him. And on it, several abandoned buildings from the earlier part of the 20th century, including a farmhouse that doubled as a vaudeville theatre back in the 20's and 30's. Odd thing about it, though, is the basement. There's a part that looks like a door should be there, but it was bricked up.

So what do we do? Naturally we get the nearest sledge hammer and bust the bricks down, revealing a brick tunnel. We then got a flashlight and decided to descend into it's depths. So we're walking and walking and walking. Nothing out of the ordinary. Bugs. Bats. Darkness. And there were several areas where we felt fresh air blowing at us, so there might of possibly been a connection to a natural cavern or sinkhole.

Then we neared the end of the tunnel and find it blocked by even more bricks. So what do we do? We head back to the basement and get the hammer. When the wall was hammered down, we were greeted by his neighbor with his shotgun pointed at both of us. I thought I was as good as dead right there. I was white as a sheet and it felt like my heart stopped.

Turned out that tunnel connected his basement with his neighbor's basement. He heard the noise of us pounding the hammer against the bricks and went downstairs with his shotgun to greet us, thinking we were burglars or something.

Luckily we resolved the situation amiably and we bricked up the neighbor's side of the tunnel.

I can't stop laughing at this story. That was not the conclusion I was suspecting, I can only imagine the looks on you faces, and imagine what you would think if some jerk was pounding through your basement wall. Glad he understood your curiosity.

Very often old theaters and the like doubled as speakeasy's during the prohibition. They were usually dark and it was custumary to close the doors when a show began. Very often you will find a hidden tunnel or vault in the basement of a theatre that was used to store or bring booze into the theatre.

Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated.

Holy crud! I never even thought about prohibition! That would easily explain the tunnel!

We were doing a quick scout around the outside of this old abandoned house (1 of 3) in the middle of nowhere, and I spotted this old rusty rake (the kind with the solid iron head, like people step on in cartoons), with the handle cut off at about 2½ feet. That wasn't so bad, but it was hanging in this creepy gnarled little tree right at the height were you'd be able to grab it real easy...
Like someone left it there on purpose or something.

So I hid it.

http://www.wraiths.org/alarmed3.htm
On our third trip to the 3 houses, the rake was NOT where I had hidden it weeks earlier.

This was kinda freaky when it happened. Me and my friend were checking out the Gray Gables at Danvers State. When we were in the basement, three or four floors up we heard these loud bangs, like someone slamming doors or something. We thought it was a homeless guy or something. Turned out to be loose doors blowing in the wind. Gave us a good scare though.

While exploring an abandoned boat house where I camp in NH, I checked out the inside and stuff, just some bails of hay, and some old street signs. Well as the group of us are leaving, this guy comes out of no where and scares the shit out of us. We weren't supposed to be on the beach after dark. We thought it was a park ranger. So I get voted to go back and see who it is, so I walk back down the path, and I slowly look around. I see the guy, no lights with him or anything walking near the bushes where we just were. So I go back and tell them and we decide to go back to the beach. The guy starts talking to us and says he's only allowed out at night and it's the only time he can see the lake. So we go and sit at another table a bit aways, and as we watch for the guy, he's just disappeared. This guy was freaky, we all got a bad vibe just from talking with him. We were pretty freaked out for the night.

As for what fear is, it is an emotion we feel when we feel apprehension or danger. Animals show fear, however do not show guilt. It is interesting, people think that when their pet goes the bathroom on your white rug, when you catch him he is acting guilty, however, they are showing fear for they do not feel guilt. Just thought that was interesting. Not with the subject at all though. This post seems long enough now. I'll go.

How about driving to your target and realizing that there are bunches of cops waiting to catch drunkards (its like Sat. night near a bar. Its a bus complex, yes I prefer recent abandonements or still active places) and seeing an obvious cop trap. And at the time you are speeding... Not much, but enough and you realize "This entire night relies on whether that cop thinks you're worth catching"

Thats a scary thing.

Bringing exploration to Clarksville.

Love this thread. It's really given me both laughs and chills.

An interesting thing is that when you're out doing UE, once you get the chills from something or begin feeling uneasy everything suddenly turns frightening. Even the most stupid things .

I just remembered doing this once. It can provide a good scare. Go to the darkest tunnels you can find and then go in the center of the tunnel. Sometimes bringing a chair is good. Turn your light off and just sit and listen to all the sounds that proceed. It can be pretty frightening when your mind starts playing tricks on you. Or when you hear more explorers coming or whoever it is. But then you can scare the shit out of them. Wait until they come within view and yell at them.

I've done that. Even a short way in it is incredibly dark. You can sit in there for a good fifteen minutes and still not be able to see a thing. Plus cars driving over manhole covers can sound like footsteps when you're already thoroughly freaked. Has anyone ever run into a utility worker in a drain? That must've been interesting.

People have strange customs in the Paris catacombs. They like to make smoke bombs and set them up at intersections and such. There was one creepy fucker who liked to hide and pop-out yelling at people while wearing a "Scream" mask. Now, just close your eyes and imagine yourself lurking in a 180 miles network of unused tunnels. You DON'T expect that kind of thing happening to you.

Cataphiles are pretty darn hardcore. I've always wanted to go in there (while all the other tourists see the eiffel tower, I am walking beneath them in a maze of bones!). They're pretty hospitable, at least at parts, are they not? Do people live down there, or make camps for a week or something (great family vacation idea)? I'd assume it would take a while of waiting until some guy came along to scare.
