Up 15 feet, the Easy Way

Ok, all you experienced UE'rs out there. I have a quandry. There's a local building, I can't say much about it, but it's worth quite a bit of effort to get into. There's a door on the ground level that I thought was open, but after much butt-bashing I've found it must be wedged from inside.

The only other way is an open second-story window on a little sub-roof, sandwiched between the building and a parking deck. Trust me, I've cased the building many many times, this is the only way in. Also, once you get up the initial 15 feet of wall, it looks like you have to climb up maybe another 6-8 feet from the top of this wall.

Now, getting up to this spot wouldn't be too much of a problem except that it's fairly visible, even at night thanks to a damnable streetlight. So, I'm wondering, what quick and/or inconspicuous ways are there to climb a sheer 15-foot wall? There's no place to chimney, however, there is a tree nearby that could be used somehow (not climbing directly, as there's no limbs until 10 feet up and the tree bends away from the building about 8 feet at the top).

I'd really love to just bring an extension ladder down there, get everyone up to the roof, and pull the ladder up with us, but I think that might be a bit too obvious... any other ideas? I'll try to get a picture tomorrow, if I go into town, and post it here.

I'm gonna have to say: Grappling hook. Pop it up onto the wall, prop your feet up against it and just scurry up fast as you can! Quick, and a hanging rope is much mre inconspicuous then a leaning ladder.
Could be worth it to shell out a few bucks and make one.

I had to scale a wall of similar height once. It was also in a fairly visible location so ladders and grappling hooks weren't of any real use.

My solution was to get a 2x4 board about 3 feet in length that I found nearby. I propped it up against the wall and made sure it was nice and sturdy. I then backed up, took a running start and used the board as a stepping prop to jump up and grab the top of the ledge, enabling me to pull myself up and over.

If you need to exit over the same wall, then drill a small hole in one end of the board. Run a thin rope through it and tie it to the board. Then, when you're setting up the board, throw the rope over on to the other side so you can pull it over. Just make sure it's long enough for you to reach it on the other side.

I suck at explaining things, so here's a visual.

Yeah, that was my second thought. One of our group is pretty light, if he could scale up first and then get the line tied off onto something a little sturdier, it could work. However, we'll all need to practice climbing skills a bit more. I ordered a cheap hook from CheaperThanDirt (tested to 600 lb though, so that gives us a FoS of about 3), gonna play with it a bit.

Hah, that's great man! Thanks, I'll go find a retaining wall somewhere and play with this idea too.

Can you describe the wall in a little more detail? Cement cahinlink etc.

Love the board idea im going to use that.

It's a cement wall, a little texture but not any handholds/footholds. On the other side is roof, so once we're up we don't have to worry about getting back down until we leave.

ahhh ok yeah i actually think two 2x8's bolted together and made to set at the right angle will make a perfect ramp. once up top you could make rope ladder or help one another up by pulling

Hmm... yet another good idea. I'll have to engineer a solution that can also be easily collapsed and fit into my car. But that's what I'm going to college for...

The 2x8s are cheap the nails, bolts, are cheap and it can be tossed out and im sure very few people will pick it up untill you walk up to the edge and put it in place. I love this idea thanks man.

You could also rent a big rental truck for the night. Park it close to the wall. Use the fairly secluded space between the truck and the wall to put up a ladder - use it to get on top of the truck - jump across to the roof.

Thanx!!

I like rope ladders. Portable, relatively inconspicuous, and less risky then a jumping maneuver.

That's a really good idea, but it would be wise to make sure there aren't any "important" buindings around, lest you look like you are setting up an Oklahoma City-like event ro something. You don't want to deal with that.

But otherwise, that's something I would never have through of.

What about getting a van or truck, dressing like a roof repair guy have some buckets with big dribbles of black tar on the outsides, brooms, etc.) and just parking there and using the ladder?

I think bringing a smaller aluminum extension ladder would be the best bet. Just have it sticking out of your car with an orange flag at the end or strap it to your car roof. When you get to the entrance point 15 feet up, lay the ladder down if you can and throw some stuff on top so it's not as visible. Or once one guy gets up top with the ladder, your buddies at the bottom could take it down and put it somewhere inconspicuous while you attach and let down a rope for them to climb up so you won't have to worry about someone seeing the ladder.

Yeah, if we go during the graveyard shift hours (e.g. after 1 or 2 AM) then I think we might stand a chance of getting everyone up without a cop driving by... that's the main thing I am worried about. There's not much residential around the area, and no nightclubs, so there will be pretty much no one there but cops on patrol.

Alternatively, we could use social engineering, go in the daytime and wear orange reflective vests and hard harts.

I have always found that wooden pallets are great make shift ladders. They come in various lengths so try to find one that is roughly 3x6. You can sturdy them up with a bit of spare wood and just drop them off the night before the mission. pallets are one of those things regular folks and cops just kind of ignore when they see them and for the most part they are easy concealed in high grass and bushes. plus most places that have them usually will give them away if you ask.

Police scanner would be a good thing to have. Wait till there's a big accident or robbery or something going on, and you know they'll be otherwise occupied.

yes pallets! I swear these things are meant for climbing. Just last week I used one to get onto the roof of an old sanitariam. I found a pallet propped up against the wall and it was just screaming "climb me fools!"

"Dane, what the hell is a 'sanitarium?'" "Don't know, why?" "We're in one."

Ok, no picture of the wall itself yet, but here's what's on the other side:

I could get a decent grapple on any number of things up there, but I'm not sure if any of it would support a person's weight. The wall would work but I'm not sure the hook would snag... so maybe a ladder is looking better and better.

I would use Chainsaw's truck idea, but they have the area blocked off to vehicles.

What about the area with the tree ? if it can't be used for climbing, it can at least provide some cover while you climb...
