I was actually exploring some abandoned fortifications when I stumbled across that. Not that I didn't know it was there, or that it was full of high school girls on that day...

In Finland that makes sense, in the U.S. unless you're exploring in the ghetto, chances are there is no need for a side arm.

shows what you know about exploring in ALL locations besides "the ghetto" in the United States.... Mr Zen, from CANADA. I lol'd when I read your post =P

And I suppose you expect to run in to gangs in mines?

I've never found anything worth keeping, really. There's a large abandoned maze of streets in my town where people like to go shooting sometimes, so there's the occasional spent 12-guage casing on the asphalt.

I would love to stumble upon an abandoned basement full of AK47s or something, though.

In all honesty, I would get the hell out of any place with a large number of weapons b/c that probably means someone is keeping them there for a reason. They probably would not appreciate you rummaging around their apocalypse stockpile. It is just like the thing with meth labs and other sketchy places, there is someone who does not appreciate you being there, and if they have enough guns to just leave them around, they are probably packing too.

Everyday is an exploration! Go out and do something new today :D

Never heard of cougars, mountain lions or bears I take it?

I have, however they are a very remote threat to humans. Polar Bears see us as food, predatory Black Bear or Grizzly Bear attacks are quite rare as are Mountain Lion attacks.

In all seriousness, I often travel solo in remote areas as I look for old mine sites worth further exploration. And yes, you do find "interesting" people wandering around out in the desert. I usually have a firearm with me and it's usually a handgun. I find it's much easier to get out of my vehicle and walk around an old mine site with a holster on my hip than carrying a long gun like a shotgun or rifle.

Out in rural areas there is a very different attitude about carrying a weapon. For us, seeing someone with a sidearm isn't really much different that seeing someone with the clip of their knife protruding from their pocket. We pretty much expect everyone to have some form of protection with them. It would be much more likely for the person to ask me how I like shooting my Glock than for them to run away screaming that I'm armed. Personally I would much rather bump into another armed person than to run into someone where neither of us are armed. Understandably it's completely different in the city.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind about gun ownership or usage. But don't expect to change mine.

I'm not saying it doesn't or couldn't happen, however, if you do a true risk assessment, wild animal attacks would be near the bottom of the list. That link is for all of North America and for many years, the chance of a fatal bear attack are extremely low.

He carries a gun, its an extra pound or two. A pint of sweat saves a gallon of blood.

I've seen coyotes around here use abandoned mines for shelter. I don't know what a coyote would do if you accidentally cornered it inside a mine, but it can't be good.

We had yotes in our back yard just about nightly. In groups of three or less, they tend to be scared of us. But we had to shoot a few the other day (were about 6) because they tried to come after us. Vicious little fuckers.

I'm in Southern California, and I've been to mines here and in several different states, including southern Arizona.

While talking to a cop in AZ after I got my CCW, we were talking about my exploring mines (he liked mines too) and he suggested that I *ALWAYS* be armed while exploring down there.
Apparently drug runners and border crossers had been known to use the mines from time to time.

One of our fellow explorers (also a UER member) was camped out at a mine waiting for me to show up one day, and a bunch of cracked-out junkies showed up, armed. They were pushing lawnmowers around inside the mine for some reason, and he said they were pretty obviously speed freaks, and later they were popping off shots nearby.

We also routinely carry several thousands of dollars worth of gear and equipment, and often have females accompanying us. Being 40 miles from the nearest streetlight and having zero cell signal isn't the best place to be unarmed, in the middle of nowhere when you come across crazy mofos.

All I'm saying is, you're comfy with your area, and that's fine. But it doesn't mean you know shit about anywhere else you haven't been. So your opinion on who YOU think should or shouldn't explore while armed is worth fuckall to anyone who doesn't live in the same state let alone the same country as you do.

I don't ever *expect* to run into people. The point is when they are there *unexpectedly*.

Nothing useful, but the NIKE base I scoured was like a redneck free for all, EVERYTHING had shot holes in it, I don't know how they got away with it being so close to an open nuke waste site with nosy security. Every time I've gone out there I've come back with at least one empty shotgun shell for a souvenir.

I remember that trip! The crazies had left by the time I got there but to hear him tell it, it was REALLY dicey there for a little bit. I think he was concerned that he might turn out to be a first hand witness to a homicide.

I would be one of those females. Most of the folks we run into out in the wilderness are pretty cool, but there are just enough crazies that you have to stay on your toes all the time.

Your description of being 40 miles from a streetlight and no cell signal describes most of the places we explore. Not sure about SoCal, but certainly up here in Nevada it is. Heck, at Delamar I have to drive about 15 miles just to get cell service.

Oh yeah, there's some whispers about another trip up there for Memorial Day.
